SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County health officials have reported 2,867 new COVID-19 infections, a new record, eclipsing the previous one of 2,287 last Friday by nearly 800 cases, marking more than 100,000 total cases in the county since the pandemic began.Friday marked the third consecutive day more than 2,000 new cases were reported, with 2,050 reported Thursday and 2,104 Wednesday. It is also the 11th day with more than 1,000 new cases and the 19th of the last 22 to reach that mark. It is just the fifth time the daily cases have crossed 2,000 -- all of which have come in the past week. The data released Friday, along with 23 deaths, raises the region's cumulative totals to 102,466 confirmed infections and 1,137 deaths.Of 25,002 tests reported Friday, 11 percent returned positive, raising the 14-day average of new cases to 8% -- a record. The number of hospitalizations continued to rise, with 38 people hospitalized and four patients put in intensive care units. The COVID-19- related hospitalizations increased to 965 -- 249 in ICUs. Since the pandemic began, 5,064 or 4.9% of cases have been hospitalized due to coronavirus, 1,098, or 1.1% have been sent to the ICU.The county's hospitals still have 18% of their ICU beds available, down from 21% Thursday. The state now estimates the ICU bed availability in the 11-county Southern California region at 6.2%, down from 7.7% on Thursday.Of the 4,627 people hospitalized in the county, 20% are due to COVID- 19, and 44% of ICU patients. This compares to 7.7% and 20%, respectively, one month ago.The county has seen a 199% increase in COVID-19 related hospitalizations in the past 30 days and a 148% increase in ICU patients in the same time frame. The previous peak in hospitalizations, in mid-July, topped out around 400 patients.Ten new community outbreaks were reported Friday. A community setting outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days. 1998

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted unanimously Monday to expand city-imposed curfews on five local parks in North Park, City Heights and near Balboa Park. The vote will establish a midnight-to-6 a.m. curfew at Cedar Ridge Mini Park, Montclair Neighborhood Park, North Park Community Park and North Park Mini Park and a 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew at City Heights Square Mini Park. The council added curfews to the five parks after residents expressed concerns about people breaking the law after-hours on park grounds. The city does not currently have a blanket park curfew, which would make it illegal to be in a park after a certain time, but many of the city's parks generally close at or some time after sunset. Multiple City Council members expressed concern that the curfews could unfairly target homeless residents. North Park, City Heights and areas adjacent to Balboa Park currently have a significant portion of the city's homeless population. "This is about trying to address legitimate public safety concerns," said City Councilman Chris Ward, who represents the district encompassing all five parks. "A huge focus of mine is to make sure that this is not inappropriately used to criminalize homelessness." With the vote, the five parks will join Children's Park, Gaslamp Square Park, Pantoja Park, the Children's Museum Park, Fault Line Park, Cortez Hill Park and the Spruce Street Pedestrian Bridge as public spaces with overnight curfews. 1473

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate will unveil 190 new parking spaces in the congested Convoy District in Kearny Mesa Tuesday before the City Council reviews that neighborhood's community plan."If you've been to the Convoy District, you know that finding a parking space can be extremely challenging," Cate said."My office has unwaveringly supported the small businesses in this hub for Asian cuisine and culture. To ensure this community project came to fruition, we spent countless days working side-by-side with business owners to ensure they were included in this process. Angled parking is the tip of the iceberg for the entire Kearny Mesa Community Plan process."Kearny Mesa was founded in 1937. Over the past eight decades, the commercially and industrially dense neighborhood has transformed into an iconic San Diego community, featuring the Convoy District, which recently formed a "Pan Asian Cultural District."Cate, in June of 2016, began the process of implementing angled parking in the Convoy District at the community's request. Two years later during his State of the District address, he announced the installation of 200 angled parking spaces would immediately begin.A total of 190 angled parking spaces have been added in the neighborhood, including 45 on Dagget Street, 80 on Vickers Street and 65 on Opportunity Road. The existing community plan for Kearny Mesa has not been updated since 1992. For the past two years, the San Diego's Planning Department has led the Kearny Mesa Community Plan update to determine how Kearny Mesa will develop in the future. The City Council will consider updating the plan at its Tuesday meeting. 1678

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's Vector Control Program will conduct two mosquito-fighting larvicide drops this week after recent heat waves and high tides increased insect populations, the county announced today.Vector Control staff will conduct their fifth aerial application of the summer on Wednesday, using a helicopter to drop batches of a granular larvicide on about 48 rivers, streams, ponds and other waterways.Vector Control uses aerial applications to abate mosquitoes that could potentially transmit West Nile virus, according to the county. On Saturday, staff will conduct a smaller drop on portions of Los Penasquitos Lagoon and San Elijio Lagoon in Cardiff to reduce saltwater mosquito numbers.High tides can expand lagoon water into areas that are normally dry, creating new pockets of stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed, especially when combined with rising temperatures. The county treats more than 1,000 acres of waterways, stretching from Chula Vista in the south to Fallbrook in the North and Oceanside in the west to Lakeside in the east.County to Conduct Two Mosquito Larvicide Drops This Week Eds: County spokesperson Gig Conaughton can be reached at (858) 692-7214.
