She used to share a two-bedroom apartment with a family of three, after she graduated from college in June 2010."I paid 1,250 yuan monthly. It was too much for me as I only earned 3,000 yuan a month," said Wu. "Besides, the family next door was very noisy."Although the current rent relieved her financial difficulty a bit, she hoped to pay less."Nearly one-third of my salary goes to rent. I am always very careful about spending money," she said.A survey done by the China Youth Daily Survey Center in December last year showed that 81.6 percent of 4,060 surveyed tenants around China thought that their rent had increased, and 80.6 percent said the soaring rent has greatly affected their lives.More and more young, white-collar Chinese have found themselves in an embarrassing situation: they have to bear a heavy financial burden from soaring rent and housing prices while not qualifying to enjoy preferential policies the government offers to low-income people, such as low-rent apartments.Lu Wei, a programmer working at a leading portable website, witnessed the housing rent increasing over the past four years."It would cost nearly 1,000 yuan less per month for a midium-decorated two-bedroom apartment in 2006," he said, now sharing a two-bedroom apartment with a friend near Beijing's downtown.Liu Qingzhu, research fellow with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, argued that housing rent has taken up too much of young people's income."Spending one-third or even a half of their income in housing rent is too much. They need money to do many other things, such as purchase decent clothes, study and for entertainment," Liu said.Also, rent is not the only thing troubling young tenants.During his four-and-a-half-year stay in Beijing, Lu has moved into new apartment five times.

BEIJING, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's National Meteorological Center alerted central and southeast China to a blizzard on Wednesday as a bitter cold front kept expanding southward, enveloping China in snow and record-low temperatures.Snows have now covered most of southern China. Even the subtropical Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region will see temperatures drops up to 10 degrees centigrade, according to a statement from the center.The ongoing Asian Para Games in Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong, were affected by the weather. The wheelchair tennis competition hadto be held indoors, with some matches being delayed on Wednesday.A snowfall, starting at 8:45 a.m., has coated Nanchang City, capital of east China's Jiangxi Province, in white. Forecasts say snowstorms will continue to ravage most of Jiangxi until Friday.With the average temperature having dropped from about 9 to 1.7 degrees centigrade, most parts of central China's Hunan province are being pounded by rain, snow and hail storms.The weather has also begun to disrupt traffic.Flights leaving an airport in Jiangxi were canceled as snows affected visibility of pilots. BEIJING, Dec.19 (Xinhua) -- China's land regulators urged local land authorities late Sunday to take concrete measures against excessive growth in the country's land prices in some Chinese cities and crack down on illegal behavior, such as land hoarding, to ensure the implementation of the government's cooling measures on the property market.The Ministry of Land and Resources(MOLAR) said in a statement on its web site that the recently seen high prices in land sales in some Chinese cities had raised social concerns, which local land authorities should pay considerable attention to, and take actions to curb the rapid growth in land prices.According to the MOLAR, cities and counties that had not provided more than 70 percent of the total land supply this year to shantytown renovation, the construction of affordable homes and medium-priced commercial housing, should not provide land for high-end housing for the rest of this year.Further, for land sales with over 50 percent premium rate or record high prices, local governments should report to provincial land authorities and the MOLAR within two working days after the deal is closed.The procedures of supplying land should also be strictly conducted, and there should never be any change in the use of land that is for the construction of affordable housing, said the statement.
