JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Health authorities are poised to declare the African continent free of the wild poliovirus after decades of effort. The declaration on Tuesday leaves Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan as the only countries thought to still have the wild poliovirus. "Today we are also celebrating another public health triumph: the eradication of wild poliovirus in Africa," said Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus with the World Health Organization. "This is an incredible achievement, and a much-needed cause for celebration."The World Health Organization says this is just the second time a virus has been eradicated in Africa, after smallpox four decades ago. However, the announcement doesn’t mean Africa is polio-free. Cases of vaccine-derived polio are still sparking outbreaks. Just because you're bankrupt doesn't mean you don't need a hand during the holiday season.Toys R Us, which filed for bankruptcy on Monday night, announced Thursday that it is looking to fill at least 13,000 positions nationwide for the upcoming holiday season.The toy retailer didn't give the total number of seasonal workers it plans to hire, but said it is looking for 3,800 workers in the New York area, 2,400 in greater Los Angeles as well as 2,400 at a warehouse in Groveport, Ohio that is run by DHL. It is also looking for about 1,000 workers each in the Philadelphia, Chicago and Boston markets as well as 900 work at home call center employees.Hiring workers just for the holidays will be harder for retailers this year since unemployment at at 4.4%, near a 16-year low. There are currently a record number of unfilled job openings according to Labor Department statistics. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A boater who had been missing since Friday was rescued about 86 miles off the coast of Florida on Sunday.The U.S. Coast Guard says 62-year-old Stuart Bee was found alive on the bow of his 32-foot Sea Ray, which had capsized.Bee departed Cape Marina in Port Canaveral on Friday and didn’t return, according to the Coast Guard.Watchstanders in Jacksonville learned of the disappearance Saturday morning and were told Bee wouldn’t typically stay out on his boat overnight.An aircrew was dispatched the area and other boaters were advised to be on the lookout for Bee’s vessel.Luckily, the Coast Guard says Bee was spotted clinging to his boat at about 11 a.m. Sunday and was then transported to shore."Saving lives at sea is our highest calling. JULIAN, Calif., (KGTV)-- Thousands of people took advantage of the first significant snowfall of the season by making the trip to Julian. While the locals invite visitors to enjoy their small mountain town, they say some of them trash the place before they head back down the mountain. For 4-year-old Frankie Miller, playing in the snow is a special treat. "It's a holiday weekend! What better thing to do than drive to Julian and eat pie?" Frankie's mother, Karine Breed, said. Her family came to Julian to get a jump on the holiday season. So did thousands of others. "Sunrise highway was closed, but we were stubborn. We came up to 79. And we are finally here!" Kristian Roque said. The roads coming into Julian were shut down due to the heavy snow on Friday. "Everybody here comes to Julian happy and smiling," Boettcher said. "And we like to keep it that way." "Obviously, you have those hooligans, so hopefully they just are respectful and considerate of the people who live here and clean up after themselves," Breed said.
