SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A cyclist says he narrowly escaped injury after finding a camouflaged 'booby trap' on a popular trail along Lake Hodges.Steven Lennox made the discovery minutes into his bike ride Friday afternoon on a trail in the San Dieguito River Park. He was taking photos that afternoon, so he was going slower than normal and stopped when he saw the shadow on the ground."It was a shadow line all the way across. I looked up from there and I saw the ivy," said Lennox.But the ivy wasn't the only thing stretched across the trail. "As I got closer, I saw the rusty wire," said Lennox.In several photos he took, the ivy is seen intertwined with barbed wire and tied to a tree."Three to four loops ... had to weave it though. Somebody spent some time putting it together," said Lennox.The barbed wire appeared to be pulled from an old fence and camouflaged with a nearby vine."When you're being deceptive and hiding something, that's being cruel," said Lennox.The wire was strewn across at a height that would hit a cyclist in the chest or neck area."I don't think someone would have enough speed to cut their head off, but somebody could snap a neck," said Lennox.The discovery was made along a trail popular with cyclists, hikers and horseback riders. Rangers didn't find any similar hazards on the trail and tell us there haven't been any similar incidents in the past. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - A San Marcos family is dealing with an unbearable loss. The Houghton family was involved in a horrific crash that killed their 13-year-old son, Bryce, Saturday night on the 405 in Orange County. The family of five was headed to San Luis Obispo to visit relatives, according to Michael Houghton. Their 17-year-old daughter was driving, when their van began to slow down. Michael says it seemed like it was running out of gas. It stopped in the HOV lane. Michael, his wife, and three kids decided to stay in the van buckled up and call for help. While they waited for 911 and a tow truck, CHP says a pickup truck slammed into the van. Another vehicle hit the pickup truck after the initial crash. The CHP arrested the driver of the pickup truck on suspicion of DUI. Officers said the driver of the pickup had major injuries. Four people in the third vehicle received minor injuries. Michael described his youngest son as a jovial person who loved to make people smile. “Short in stature but big in personality,” Michael said. “One of the things he loved the most was to make people happy.” The Houghton’s other two children, 15-year-old Mason, and 17-year-old Carissa, received minor injuries, though Mason will be on crutches, according to his dad. Michael’s wife, Gael, needed surgery. Michael received injuries to the back of his head, and injuries to his eye that had previously undergone a procedure. The family was very involved with Anthem Church in Vista, as well as Bread of Life Rescue Mission in Oceanside. The Houghtons had organized an event for the homeless on the Saturday before the crash. VALLEY CENTER, Calif. (KGTV) — A fiery plane crash in Guatemala left a North County family without a husband and father. Luke Sullivan, 28, was killed after his plane crashed near Chimaltenango, located northwest of Guatemala City. Luke's wife, Ashley, says they had recently moved there three weeks ago, after Luke got his dream job, as a missionary pilot. He was working with a group operating in Guatemala. Luke would fly missionary personnel to various villages. He was working to become a missionary himself to speak to the different communities. His plane went down on Thursday, June 27. Ashley says he was making a landing, but something went wrong. "We were waiting for him, because it looked like he was just going to turn around, making a go-around approach," she said. "I hear an explosion and see more smoke." Emergency crews pulled Luke out of the plane before it exploded. His passenger had jumped out of the plane. Both men were severely burned. Luke was taken to the hospital but died overnight. His passenger survived and is currently being treated at a burn center in Dallas. "Luke was an extremely good pilot, and very experienced," Ashley said. She says he's been flying for more than nine years. "What we kind of pieced together — my father is a pilot also — is that something caught fire in the cockpit. It was very quick because I saw his landing and it looked perfectly normal." An investigation into the crash is ongoing. The Sullivans have three young children, twins that are three years old, and a one year old. His wife is also five months pregnant. The family has started a GoFundMe for funeral expenses. They've also started a GoFundMe to help pay for the family of the other man in the crash, to help pay for his hospital bills. 1783
