SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Like so many businesses throughout San Diego County, businesses along the border in San Ysidro are also preparing to scale back operations because of the state's COVID-19 purple tier.Businesses in the border region have already seen a significant decline in business because of international travel restrictions currently in place. Since March, the border has been closed to all tourist travel, only open for essential needs, like going to work or getting medical care. Tuetano Taqueria is one of the businesses affected. Just blocks from the border, its owners are doing everything it can to stay open. The trendy taco shop is run by Fernando Covarrubias and his wife, Chef Priscilla Curiel. During the initial stay-at-home order, the couple had to lay off their employees and run the business themselves. The taqueria was recently honored, making the Michelin Guide, famous for it's tacos served with the option of bone marrow on the side. Now, the owners are getting ready to scale back to takeout orders because of the purple tier restrictions. According to the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce, from March to July, roughly 100 businesses closed permanently. Jason Wells, the chamber's executive director, said the border travel restrictions are devastating the region. Wells said all businesses in the area are hurting, but retail has taken the biggest hit. According to Wells, about 95% of customers in the area are from Mexico.Wells explained that most of the businesses along the border make their biggest profits during the holidays, and the state's purple tier isn't helping. If the border travel restrictions continue, Wells thinks more businesses will not survive. Covarrubias and his wife are hoping people will follow the health guidelines so COVID-19 case rates go down and business can get back to full operation. Despite their struggles, the couple is working on opening a second business in National City, called Mujer Divina, a coffee shop that will also serve burritos. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In a statement, the City of San Diego says it wasn't given enough time ahead of the July 4 weekend to close beach parking lots.Friday, California Office of Emergency Services sent a letter to city managers in the county asking them to close their beach parking lots ahead of the weekend. The letter was sent to officials in San Diego, Imperial Beach, Coronado, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside."At the time of writing, beaches under the jurisdiction of local governments within San Diego County are the only beaches without visitation restrictions throughout all of Southern California, and therefore are attracting thousands of residents from outside your coastal communities and creating significant potential for disease transmission, particularly in crowded restaurants, bars, retail, and hotels," the letter stated. "... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In the wake of this summer's protests over racial inequality, a high school athletic director from San Diego is trying to change a system he says doesn't have enough minority representation.Francis Parker AD Anthony Thomas started NOMAD, the National Organization of Minority Athletic Directors."We have to get comfortable being uncomfortable," says Thomas. "And we have to have difficult conversations within our community."Thomas began the organization with three other AD's from Oakland, Minneapolis, and Richmond, Virginia.They say NOMAD will guide and mentor minority coaches, athletes, and administrators who want to further their careers.Thomas says seeing the racial unrest in the wake of George Floyd's death was a turning point."I saw myself under that knee. I saw my student-athletes under that knee. I saw my nephew under that knee. So it was really a call to action," says Thomas.Thomas' school plays in the Coastal Conference. He noticed that only two of its 18 schools have black athletic directors. Thomas saw similar numbers across the state and country but couldn't find any specific data because no one had been tracking it yet on the high school level."You have to lead by example," says Thomas. "That's what we decided to do as Nomad is to get out ahead of it, and no longer wait, no longer be complicit."In its first five months, NOMAD has grown to more than 200 members. They've already held a handful of virtual webinars teaching people how to advance their careers in athletics. Thomas wants to make sure everyone has representation and opportunity."The data tells a story," says Thomas. "There's not a lot of opportunities for underrepresented people to become athletic directors, and we would like to see that change in the best way possible. And we want to facilitate hoping in that shift."Thomas thinks this can also help students by giving minority athletes people they can look up to who also look like them.He says NOMAD can also help guide conversations between players and coaches of different ethnic and racial groups that intersect in sports."This job is not about color. It's not about ethnicity. It's about passion. It's about loving kids. And that's what we want to do," he says.
