SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man accused of killing his wife in their City Heights apartment appeared in court Tuesday. Bail was set at million at the arraignment for Abdiaziz Kerow, 45, who was arrested in Panama on March 20 and extradited to San Diego.Kerow is accused of killing his 36-year-old wife, Muna Salad Kuri. Kuri’s sister found the victim’s body in a bed in the couple’s home on the 4000 block of Van Dyke Avenue on March 4. Hundreds of Kuri's family members as well as members of the community attended the arraignment. So many people showed up, the courtroom was unable to accommodate the crowd. The victim's sister, Amiina Salad said her sister was "sweet, humble, she's funny. She's always there for you, no matter what happens, she's there."Salad also had a message for Kerow. "My sister is in heaven. You're going to rot in here and you're going to rot in hellfire.''Somali community leader says this is the first time domestic violence death that has affected a Somali woman in their San Diego community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The 19th annual True Blue Luncheon celebrated the bravery shown by three officers who shared their experience in the Rolando shooting almost a year later.The very shield that protected Officers Francisco Roman and Dan Bihum was at the luncheon, helping SD Police Foundation donors understand what their money is going toward. The shield is hefty, with a steel plate inside, according to Officer Trevor Philip.Bihum said he saw two bright flashes, "two of the rounds struck me." "He literally fell right in front of me it was probably one of the hardest moments of my life," Roman said.RELATED: Body camera video shows San Diego Police shooting in RolandoThat night, June 23, 2018, the distress call from a neighbor concerned about Joe Darwish turned into a gunfight injuring two officers and ultimately ending with Darwish's death.The shield was handed to Roman and Bihum while they were trapped in the hallway."As soon as Francisco got the shield in front of them he took another volley of gunfire and two of the rounds hit the shield," a SWAT Officer said."Just a great feeling because we had some form of protection," Roman said. Both officers struggled to share, as they relived the moments on that day."The shield absolutely saved our life," Roman said tearing up. He looked away, clenched his jaw and continued, "it definitely saved us for sure."Thursday, they shared their story with a room full of donors in the Harbor Island Sheraton. Their goal is in sharing their trauma, they hoped to inspire San Diegans to open their wallets and help them buy 758 more shields so that their brothers and sisters in blue are protected. The money raised by the luncheon goes to the San Diego Police Foundation, who helps buy whatever the department needs. In 2018, the luncheon raised 0,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The message from nurses and caregivers Tuesday morning was clear, "it's a question of priorities for entire healthcare system." Frustration and anger built after a 27-month contract renewal was signed by Palomar Health's CEO, Diane Hansen. The contract details a base salary close to million, with potential of earning bonuses, increasing that amount. Frontline workers argue that because COVID-19 led to an increase of patients, and layoffs of caregivers and nurses, "the board should have invested in resources and more protective equipment. Some of the PPE is not even medical grade, and everyone who's been laid off should be brought back," said representative for California's nurses association, Sarah Gurling. Gurling joined other reps and nurses in a protest at Palomar Medical Center, arguing funds should have been allocated towards other resources within their facilities."Caregivers and nurses are the heart of the hospital. We know what's best for patients and each other. The hospital executives and the Palomar board has lost sight of that." Meahwhile, Palomar's health board chair, Richard Engel, stands behind his decision. He said Hansen has done a tremendous job and credits much of the hospital's success through her work. John Slobig, 59 and Terry Jones, 53 are due in court Wednesday afternoon in connection with last Wednesday's home invasion in the 4600 block of Firestone Street.Eighty-seven-year-old Paul Schmidt suffered injuries to his head, arms, and wrist during the attack. "I was very grateful for the work that the police did, " said Schmidt. Schmidt said he's lived in the home for fifty-three years and never felt unsafe. "I know that drugs have been so dominant in our society lately that it's a whole different world that we're living in. Things we used to take for granted, you can't anymore," said Schmidt. Schmidt was installing a ceiling fan when he says three men burst through his front door."All of a sudden, these three guys come in and said this is a robbery and he grabbed scissors and walked up to me and said don't mess with us. I didn't want to die that day, and there was three. I'm one guy, I'm 87, I'm not as tough as I used to be," said Schmidt. He tried to pull one of the intruders by his beard, that's when Schmidt says one of the robbers hit him over the head with a ceiling fan blade."The one guy was higher than a kite; the one they have in custody, he was really a terrible person." Police say the trio ransacked the home and took off in the victim's truck, which was recovered. The suspects have lengthy criminal records. They're scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at 1:30 pm. 1551
