Spain and Portugal faced another exceptionally hot day Saturday as a heat wave that has killed three people in Spain threatened to raise temperatures to record levels.Large areas of Portugal are on red alert for heat, including the capital, Lisbon. Temperatures will reach 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) in parts of the south-central Alentejo region, according to the country's weather agency, IPMA.Forecasters at the UK Met Office have said temperatures in the Iberian Peninsula this weekend "could beat the all-time continental European record of 48C," which is a little over 118 degrees Fahrenheit, before the mercury starts to dip. That record was set in the Greek capital, Athens, in July 1977. The record for Spain is 47.3 Celsius, while for Portugal it's 47.4 Celsius, according to the World Meteorological Organization. 847

"Westview High School continues to be a place whereall of our students are respected and are expected to respect one another." Kiyan Marashi is a Westview senior.  "I'm greatly disappointed; it's offensive to people from all walks of life, especially a school that's so diverse. I think it's horrible to see this happen." Poway Unified's Director of Communications, Christine Paik, told 10News, "Whoever did this intended to offend as many people as possible.  Genitalia drawn on there, sexual and crude language, profanity, 666, as well as a symbol of a swastika."  1472

SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A concert at the Belly Up Tavern this Saturday will raise money for a program dedicated to kids with special needs.Banding Together will hold their 7th annual fundraiser from 12-4 pm on February 24th. The concert features three local bands, and one special, surprise guest artist. The bands are Dr. Seahorse, the Grinnell Trio and Jungle Poppins. But the real stars will be the kids and young adults from the program, some of whom will perform with the bands on stage."It's thrilling for them," says Banding Together Co-Founder and Director Angela Meier. "They hear that people like the Rolling Stones have performed a show there and now they get to as well!"The program uses music therapy to help people with special needs come out of their shell. Meier says it's inspiring and amazing to see how they progress."I've had students who have difficulty putting sentences together," says Meier. "And using rhythm and music, all of the sudden they're able to sing whole sentences."In addition to individual and small group classes, Banding Together runs 42 "Jam Sessions" throughout the year, where the students and musicians join together to make music."It's not just that it's making them feel good, but it's giving them self-esteem," says Meier. "It gives them social skills and prepares them to go out into the community and give back."The concert is open to the public and will also feature live auctions, silent auctions and other fundraisers. All the money goes to fund scholarships and to pay for the jam sessions. Over the previous six years, this event has helped the group give out 134 scholarships totaling ,000.Tickets are and are available at the door, or here. 1714

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. (AP) — A Vermont woman whose family peacock ran off with a flock of turkeys says she's hopeful to get close enough to catch it with a net.The peacock belonging to Rene and Brian Johnson has been on the run for six weeks. On Wednesday, the Johnsons posted a message on the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Facebook page: "My peacock has run off with the turkeys. Do you have any suggestions on how to catch the little twerp?"Rene Johnson told WCAX-TV she thinks the bird she calls Pea was lonely so it sought turkey companions.Johnson said Friday she got close to Pea on Thanksgiving Day, but couldn't catch it.Johnson says she's worried about the cold, but she recognizes the unusual situation, which she says is "kind of funny, actually." 766
