CHULA VISTA (KGTV) --  Eastlake's Design District shopping complex, which once boasted a vibrant family and adult nightlife destination for the sprawling east Chula Vista communities, lost yet another marquee tenant.Good bye, Tavern+Bowl Eastlake.The 11-year-old bowling alley and sports lounge, located at 871 Showroom Place off Otay Lakes Road, locked its doors unexpectedly Monday night.  The 16,000-square-foot establishment nestled within a modern strip mall adorned with water features, rich landscaping, and winding sidewalks was a popular spot for locals.Tavern and Bowl is one of four recent closures at the Design District: restaurant Filippi's Pizza Grotto, arcade and laser tag center Lazer Journey, and indoor go-kart track Eastlake Speed Circuit.READ:?Anonymous tip led to Filippi's inspectionIt's unclear if staff or management were aware of the bowling alley's plans to shut down.  Robyn Spencer, a sales director at the San Diego location, would only say that the tavern "has permanently closed."What is clear is that at least one regular was left in the dark.Emeka Enunwa, an Eastlake resident and manager at Work Skills, is upset that the bowling alley is gone.  He says he often brings a group of adults with disabilities to Tavern and Bowl to learn life skills by working light "volunteer-like" duties, such as cleaning and performing tasks.He says his group was there two days ago but nobody told him that would be their last shift. His group took pride working at the facility and that the news of the closure may be devastating to some. Enunwa also worried about what's happening in Eastlake that's forcing all these businesses to shut down. READ: 'Ghost Town?'?Vacant storefronts reflect mall struggles at Chula Vista's Otay Ranch Town Center"I live in the neighborhood and have seen stores close in this shopping complex," he said. "I'm beginning to feel bad as a business owner; no notice ... throwing employees out of work," he said."I'm feeling for the city...they're losing jobs, they're losing money," he said.Enunwa is working quickly to find another business partner but says it's hard "because not everybody wants to accept people with disabilities."The District at Eastlake property management group could not be reached immediately Wednesday for comment.10News' Laura Acevedo contributed to this report. 2492

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A former Tijuana police officer was handed a two- year state prison sentence today for his role in a planned break-in of a Chula Vista residence, which he and others believed was a stash house containing around million in drug money.Marco Quijas-Castillo, 28, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of conspiracy to commit robbery for the attempted January break-in.A fellow Tijuana officer, Jesus Estrada Torres, 35, was also charged in the case and is awaiting trial on a conspiracy charge.According to preliminary hearing testimony, the two officers and four other men believed a shipment of money would be delivered to the three-bedroom residence, which was actually being rented by the FBI. The defendants were informed of the supposed shipment by an undercover FBI agent, according to testimony.According to the criminal complaint, Quijas-Castillo and Torres crossed into the United States from Mexico with Ignacio Martinez-Cruz, 34, and met up in Chula Vista with fellow defendants Nicholas Jeremiah Shaw, 25, Mario Eugene Hall, 35, and Tomas Emmanuel Ramirez, 30, who allegedly traveled to Chula Vista from San Bernardino County.Castillo and Torres ``provided counter-surveillance'' at a Kohl's store in Chula Vista, while the other four men met with the undercover agent, according to the complaint.Castillo and Torres also provided surveillance near the Chula Vista residence while Shaw walked up to the house, and ``entered a code into a lockbox containing a key to enter the house,'' the complaint alleges.According to testimony, the men planned to tie up two people believed to be inside the home, then take the money, but were arrested by law enforcement upon approaching the home. 1733

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A South Bay family spoke about the frightening moments that took place when a police chase ended in front their home and then turned into a shootout on their driveway Monday afternoon.Mark Yturralde said his son-in-law had the quick thinking and presence of mind to shut the door to prevent a suspect, later identified as David Angulo, from getting into their home on Rutgers Avenue.“I didn’t have time to be kind or nice. I had to shove my wife and granddaughter into a closet, and I told them to stay low, keep quiet, don’t come out until I tell you. I tried to watch from a corner,” said Yturralde.RELATED: Carjacking, pursuit leads to deadly officer-involved shooting in Chula VistaAccording to Chula Vista police, Angulo was a known gang member wanted in connection with at least three shootings in June. Police said Angulo carjacked a pickup truck in an area near Main Street, refused to pull over for officers, and led a pursuit into east Chula Vista.Police said Angulo lost control of the truck and crashed into a car driven by an active-duty military member. While the other driver was seriously injured, Angulo got out of the truck and ran to a family’s driveway.Angulo, according to police, opened fire at officers -- the exchange of gunfire that Yturralde said went on for several minutes. Shots struck and flattened the tires of vehicles parked in the driveway, but none of the bullets penetrated the house.Yturralde and Chula Vista police credited Yturralde’s son-in-law for keeping the incident from turning into a hostage situation, or worse.Angulo was killed during the shootout, and police said an investigation will determine how many shots were fired and who opened fire first. Police will also review officers’ body camera footage.Police promised the investigation findings will be released in a timely manner.The three officers involved in the incident were not injured.Family members said they found five shell casings in their backyard. They told ABC 10News they are grateful to police but also offered their condolences to Angulo’s family, even though he put their family in danger. 2145

(KGTV) -- The Port of San Diego and City of Chula Vista reached a milestone today, approving the financial agreement for the Chula Vista Bayfront resort hotel and convention center project."It's taken us 30 years to get to this day, and it's certainly worth it," Chula Vista Mayor, Mary Casillas Salas said. Officials also authorized a revenue-sharing agreement between the two agencies.The entire project will cost .1 billion. Of that, RIDA Developement will invest 5 million. The city and the port authority will pay for a combined 0+ million. Port commissioners said it is a large investment for an even larger long-term reward. "As far as what we'll get back, we will see an immediate impact by the fact that it's going to create 10,000 construction jobs, and it's going to put about a billion dollars in the local and regional economy," Moore said. RELATED: South Bay residents get an idea of massive bayfront developmentIn August of 2017, the City gave residents a better idea of what the Bayfront will look like in the next 20 years.The anchor for the Bayfront is set to be a .1 billion resort hotel and convention center that the city says will be built by Houston-based RIDA Development.The current Chula Vista RV Park will also move roughly a mile away to make room for construction. (KGTV) -- Police arrested a 33-year-old transient in connection with a series of fires set in a river bottom area of Chula Vista since early summer.Chula Vista police said Alejandro Gonzalez was taken into custody Sunday after officers responded to a reported brush fire near the 1700 block of Fourth Avenue.According to police, Gonzalez was spotted by officers “walking quickly away from the scene of the fire.” Officers made contact with him and during questioning they found Gonzalez “in possession of several lighters.”Gonzalez was described as a transient known to frequent Chula Vista’s river bottom area.In a news release, police said: “During questioning by officers, Gonzalez admitted to intentionally setting several brush fires in the river bottom area over the past 5 months. Gonzalez claimed he was setting the fires due to hearing voices.
