SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The family of a Navy sailor nearly killed in Syria is starting the new year with one less challenge.Over a year ago Navy EOD Tech Kenton Stacy was left paralyzed after an IED explosion. As Stacy was recovering in San Diego, renters were destroying the family’s Virginia home. “Just with everything we’re going through, it added stress. I just couldn’t believe how someone could damage our home and be okay with it,” said Kenton’s wife Lindsey.The home reeked of cigarettes, and the carpet, walls, and blinds were destroyed. When the EOD community in Virginia learned what happened in November they began to make repairs on the home.Julie Fish, a real estate agent with Signature Realty Select, also stepped in to help, taking over as the realtor.After reaching out for more help, people around the country offered money, time, services and resources. “These guys are...it’s like a brotherhood, there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for one another, and I like to think the wives are the same way,” said Fish, whose husband is also a Navy EOD Tech. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sunset Hills Elementary school in Rancho Pe?asquitos has been honored for having the top-ranked School Safety Patrol in the city.The program is a partnership between San Diego Unified School District, Poway Unified School District, and the San Diego Police Department. Students participate by helping serve as crossing guards before and after school. Officer David Valdez, who oversees the team at Sunset Hills and four other schools, says the students learn leadership, community service, and volunteerism. "I have a lot of fun with them," Valdez told 10News. "It's great seeing them develop over the course of the school year."About 90 schools participate in the progam, encompassing 2,000 student volunteers. Each student is eligible to apply for the top honor of being designated as the "Colonel". This year, Sunset Hills student Maddie Smith won. "It's a great feeling," she said. "WHen you help a kid during something, even if it's just a small act, it makes you feel really good inside."Smith has ambitious goals. "I want to be the President when I grow up and I feel like this is a great way to lead me up to that. I will learn how to be a great leader, teamwork, a good citizen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The non-profit organization Border Angels hosted its 32nd-anniversary dinner on Saturday. The dinner raises money to help continue providing the services they offer to immigrants in the community, including water drops for border crossers, legal services, and shelter. The migrant caravan and the upcoming election were hot topics of conversation during the dinner. This year the organization honorees were Margarita Zavala, Kirsten Zittlau and Jacqueline Arellano. Zavala and Zittlau are attorneys. Arellano is the water drop coordinator for Border Angels. Border Angels' founder Enrique Morones tells 10News that he decided to honor women this year. He also encouraged everyone to go out and vote on November 6th saying the president is sending the wrong message about immigrants. Guests at the event also reacted to President Donald Trump deploying the military to the border. At a campaign event, the president was not backing down, saying migrants need to come to the U.S. legally.   1051

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The manager of a Cricket Wireless store in Pacific Beach is hoping the public can help identify two men involved in tagging the back of the store. Blake Beadle, the store manager, said newly installed cameras captured two men approach the store on Garnett Avenue on Monday night at around 9:30 p.m.One of the men approached the back of the store and appeared to spray paint something on the back wall. Meanwhile, the other man stood watch.Beadle said he had just painted over the spot a week and a half ago, when vandals had hit the same spot. “It seems like as soon as we paint over it, within a few weeks it gets tagged again in a similar fashion,” said Beadle. He reported the latest incident to police. He said he hopes the video can help identify the suspects. 792

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The FBI’s Violent Task Crimes Force asked for the public’s help Monday to find a man known as the “Burgundy Bandit” and wanted for nine robberies in San Diego, La Mesa, and El Cajon.In each robbery, the man entered the business and approached an employee, flashing a gun hidden in his waistband, the FBI said in a news release.The man demanded money and walked away.
