BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Canvassers for China's economic census must ensure the validity and credibility of the results to give decision makers better insight into the economy, Vice Premier Li Keqiang said on Sunday.     The census is vital as it provides a frame of reference for the government to maintain stable, rapid economic growth as the financial crisis deepens, Li said during visits to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and a census data collection site here.     "The global financial crisis has not bottomed out but has further hit the world economy, and its adverse impact on China is gradually unfolding," said Li.     He urged census-takers to strive for quality and timeliness in their data. Workers have finished preparations and begun to collect and analyze the data.     The NBS started the census in 2004, and it is conducted every five years. The current census will help form the basis of the social and economic development blueprint for the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015).     Statisticians around the nation will survey all enterprises from the secondary and tertiary sectors, including smaller ones that were omitted from earlier annual statistics.

BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- The pursuit of harmony is a basic value and the fundamental spirit of Chinese culture, State Councilor Liu Yandong told representatives of the 2008 Beijing Forum on Friday.     More than 300 scholars from more than 40 countries participated in the forum, with the theme "The Harmony of Civilization and Prosperity for All-The Universal Value and the Development Trend of Civilization."     Liu congratulated the forum, saying its theme was highly significant.     She said the concept of harmony had become a key criterion in many types of relations: among peoples, between individuals and society, among nationalities and states, among cultures and between humans and nature.     "It is especially important for academic and educational institutions to promote multinational cultural communication under globalization," said Liu.     Co-sponsored by Peking University, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education and the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies, the Beijing Forum 2008 -- the fifth such annual meeting -- convened on Nov. 7. The forum will focus on the environment, the Olympic spirit and the global financial crisis.

BEIJING, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- China had "unprecedented dynamic interaction" with the rest of the world in 2008, receiving some 180 heads of state or government, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said here Sunday.     Yang made the remarks when addressing a new year reception in the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. State Councilor Dai Bingguo and more than 400 foreign diplomats and Chinese officials were also present.     Yang said the cooperation between China and the rest of the world was further consolidated and enhanced amid the natural disasters, Beijing Olympics as well as the international financial turmoil.     The year 2008 marks the 30th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up. BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- China's Foreign Ministry has demanded that the U.S. Embassy to China facilitate travel for the families of those killed and injured in Friday's tour bus crash near the Hoover Dam in Arizona. In a statement released Sunday, the ministry confirmed that six Chinese nationals died and nine were injured, including one from Hong Kong.     The Chinese Embassy in the United States and Consulate General in Los Angeles immediately dispatched a team assist U.S. authorities with treating the injured and investigating the accident. BEIJING, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council Thursday approved a plan to deepen reform and opening up in the southern Pearl River Delta area, where the country's reform and opening up drive was initiated 30 years ago.     The plan was unveiled on the day when the nation was commemorating the 30th anniversary of the 3rd plenary session of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which decided to open up the country and reform its struggling economy.     The pioneer area of the country's reform and opening up scheme was urged to accelerate economic restructuring and take the lead in building a resource-conserving and environment-friendly society, according to the plan approved by an executive meeting of the State Council, or the Cabinet.     The plan also pressed the area to promote technologies so as to excel in innovation, and coordinated development in both urban and rural areas was also stressed.     The meeting, presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao, said the area was also to take the lead in deepening reforms and opening up, so that an improved socialist market economy system could be established and a more open economic system could be set up as the region enhances its cooperation with neighbors Hong Kong and Macau.     The meeting said the Pearl River Delta is still maintaining stable and relatively fast development at present, but it also admitted that the area received powerful shocks from the current financial crisis, as there are many smaller and export-oriented enterprises in the region.     To keep the pace of development would be the top priority of the region at the present stage, the meeting said.
