Emily Chandler of Vista says she never could have imagined her kids would still be distance learning in the fall. "This has been going on so long, and I'm just exhausted," Chandler says. Her three sons are in three different schools and her oldest, Timmy, has autism. Helping them all with school means studying up on things herself. Marriage and family therapist Serene Carruthers, of Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital, says what Chandler is feeling is tied to the seemingly endless nature of the pandemic."It really is because our body is built to respond to stressful events typically that last for a duration of a short period of time," says Carruthers. "Some experts call it surge capacity. Like a battery our adaptive system can provide us with the mental, physical and emotional power to survive a short-term emergency. Then it needs to be recharged which is easier said than done during a pandemic because for many people, their self-care rituals have been upended or canceled.""It is a very lonely time and I'm not getting that energy, that recharge," says Chandler. Carruthers says not to underestimate the power of play, which is free and can be done anywhere. She also recommends shifting expectations, maintaining connections with loved ones, keeping a gratitude journal about the good in your life, and exercising even if it's just walking in your home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Like most people who’ve worked decades towards retirement, Danielle Schulte has some ideas on how she’ll spend it."Initially I’m going to sleep in late, read the newspaper, yes, I still read paper!”Schulte is an Employee Relation Specialist for UC San Diego and hopes to retire in about six years.While she's been saving since graduating college, Schulte wishes she'd saved more, especially watching the market plunge in recent days.“Because I am getting close to retirement, I don’t have as much comfort in giving it time to even out,” said Schulte.She hired a financial advisor 13 years ago and continues to fine-tune her plan, currently looking into annuities."He has been really good in helping me not to panic, helping me invest my money in stable securities as best you can, given the market," said Schulte.Dennis Brewster is a financial advisor for SagePoint Financial. He too says it's not the time to panic.“Right now we’re down about 10 percent, that’s normal, it’s just that we haven’t had anything for so long, I think that's what makes it a little tougher, we haven’t had any declines," said Brewster. Since then, things for small businesses like hers have been touch and loyal customers including high school juniors, Siya and Anoushka, wanted to help."A lot of businesses were closing. We both brainstormed about how we could help local businesses who have helped us in the past," said Anoushka." So they created a campaign called Loving the Locals. "We started a GoFund Me page and reached out to friends and family who were able to donate. With that money, we were able to donate to Mostra Coffee."And when Malone was ready to meet her donors she said, "I'm looking for adults, they didn't give me their names or tell me how much and I see these two young high school girls and they're like 'Are you Jelynn?'" To describe Malone as surprised was an understatement. "Then they hand over this large check to me and it says a thousand dollars and I'm completely shocked. I'm emotional, touched," Malone described. Malone's no stranger to giving back. A portion of her profits goes to farmers in the Phillippines, where she sources a lot of her product from. When the pandemic began, she donated gratitude boxes to frontline workers. All of her efforts never went unnoticed, even by young customers. "They [Mostra Coffee] continue to give back to community even during these difficult times and we felt that quality was important to us and it's what we were going for. We shared similar values and they were a great fit for us," Siya said. Mostra Coffee is the first business Loving the Locals has donated to. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jurors were again deadlocked in the retrial of the man accused of shooting two people outside of a Metallica concert in downtown San Diego in 2017.In July, 37-year-old Ray Pitoau had his first trial and was found guilty of three firearm charges, including felon in possession of a gun.
