OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A partnership is turning around the lives of young people at risk in North County. As 10News explores Life in Oceanside, we’re turning our focus to the success of the Boys & Girls Club. One of the young people helped by the program is 17-year-old Hunter Meyer. Like many teenagers, he struggled to find himself. RELATED: Mayor Pete Weiss talks Life in Oceanside“I became someone who preferred to sneak out late, get into a lot of trouble and run-ins with police,” said Meyer. Meyer said he started hanging out with gang members in sixth grade. As a freshman, he was kicked out of high school. Life became more difficult for him. “We were drinking and I came back just feeling like I’ve lost everything. I kind of lost who I was, you know, and then the next day I tried to hang myself and my mom and little brother walked in. That was kind of the turning point where I realized things needed to change drastically,” Meyer said. It was started by Oceanside Police Lt. Valdavinos. “The people he was dealing with didn't have positive relationship with law enforcement and we weren't getting to them early enough,” said Ashley Sanchez, an OYP crime prevention specialist and mentor. Meyer was in the first class, spending two hours per week for 12 weeks to be redirected away from gangs. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A bicyclist was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle in Oceanside Wednesday afternoon. According to the Oceanside Police Department, the crash happened around 4:18 on State Route 76 at Old Grove. When officers arrived, they found the man lying in the street. He was taken to the hospital with a serious head injury. RELATED: Bicyclist killed in Escondido hit-and-run crashBased on statements from witnesses, police say they believe the vehicle entered the intersection on a green light. “The bicyclist also entered the intersection from another direction on a red light and collided with the SUV,” police said. Nursing homes are facing a new mandate for COVID-19 testing.Officials at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) say if they're not doing it, they'll be fined 0 a day or over ,000 for each instance of noncompliance.The government says nursing homes need to do widespread testing of residents and staff if any resident shows symptoms or tests positive.Nursing homes will also be required to test staff more often, depending on the virus activity in the area.The Trump administration says it is giving facilities .5 billion to help with costs.Nursing homes continue to raise concerns about the cost of this testing and additional expenses like personal protective equipment and additional staffing due to the pandemic.The mandate also comes as their sources of revenue have changed along with the number of residents declining.With the added costs and revenue change, LeadingAge, the association of nonprofit providers of aging services, is hearing from some of its members that they may be forced to close. At least one nursing home in Rhode Island has had to do it already. Others are looking at the possibility of having to consolidate or alter the services provided.Nursing homes get paid through Medicaid, Medicare and private payments. According to a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis of Certification and Survey Provider Enhanced Reports data, nationwide 62 percent is paid through Medicaid, 26 percent is paid through private payments and 12 percent is paid through Medicare.Post-acute care through Medicare is a big revenue source for nursing homes. That means you're coming out of the hospital and need to rehab for a few weeks in a nursing home."With elective surgeries being closed down, there is no steady flow of residents who need that level of care. That's been cut off entirely," said Katie Smith Sloan, President and CEO of LeadingAge.Sloan says they need those elective surgeries to start up again everywhere to fill that gap in revenue lost as a result of the pandemic.The most recent survey from insurance company Genworth Financial finds the national median cost for a private room at a nursing home is more than 0,000 a year.Depending on your financial situation, you may start paying this and then have Medicaid start paying later.Leading Age says they haven't heard from their members that they'll be increasing prices because of the financial challenges they're facing."Nursing homes charge what the market will bear, and I don't think the market can bear much more than that," Sloan said. It's a lot of money because it costs a lot to operate a nursing home."LeadingAge looked at nursing home closures right before the pandemic started. It found more than 500 closed since June 2015. Some of these closures were because of low occupancy. OCEANSIDE (CNS) - Police responded to a reported shooting behind Oceanside High School early Saturday but weren't able to locate any potential suspects or victims, an officer said.Dispatchers received several calls around 2:30 a.m. reporting the sound of gunshots near the intersection of Division Street and Central Avenue, Oceanside Police Lt. Kedrick Sadler said. Officers headed to the scene and were able to find shell casings on the ground in the area, indicating a shooting had occurred, but couldn't find anyone associated with the incident, Sadler said.A vehicle reportedly was seen speeding from the area, but police could not provide a description. Investigators believe the shooting may be gang-related, Sadler said. 741
