A high school teacher in Tennessee is under investigation by Nashville Public Schools officials following a recording students made in her classroom in which she uses profanity and seems to berate kids with foul language.The recording was made last week inside McGavock High School. It shows the teacher telling her kids "I have better things to do than to tell you whether or not you can go to the mother f--- bathroom, that’s not my job. If you have to pee you should be able to get that done without me. I don’t give a f--- about your bladder."MNPS officials say the teacher involved admitted to the behavior. In the seven-minute clip, the teacher seems to be venting many of her frustrations about the class."Everyone can make an 'A' in my class. Show up with a pencil and paper, when I write you write. I don’t know why you have not caught on to that since August," she can be heard saying.At one point she tells the students, "You gonna get somebody pregnant, and then you’ll be like ‘the system is against me, they want child support,' well maybe you should keep your dick in your pants."Students who were in the classroom at the time of the outburst say they alerted school officials but no action was taken against the teacher."Being a teacher is very stressful but I feel like opinions like that you should keep it to yourself. A law professor and author is clearing the air around voting ahead of the big general election in the fall.Kim Waylee wrote “What You Need to Know About Voting and Why” to help people understand our nation’s election system.Waylee says one of the biggest misconceptions is that because of COVID-19, people think they can wait to register. She says there's also a lot of misinformation around voter fraud.“To suggest that there's, you know, there's somehow intrinsic, core problematic issues with fraud is just wrong,” said Waylee. “Plus, we have five states that vote almost exclusively by mail already and there, we haven't seen problems with that. We know how to do this, if there's sufficient funding.”Waylee says funding is a big hurdle for states that are strapped for cash because of the pandemic.More resources could help address issues with voter suppression in areas that have historically not had access.“And that is going to come from federal dollars being put into the system in a way that benefits all Americans,” said Waylee. “Because it's really ‘we the people,’ not we the Republicans and we the Democrats. A disproportionately large number of poor and minority students were not in schools for assessments this fall, complicating efforts to measure the pandemic’s effects on some of the most vulnerable students, a not-for-profit company that administers standardized testing said Tuesday.Overall, NWEA’s fall assessments showed elementary and middle school students have fallen measurably behind in math, while most appear to be progressing at a normal pace in reading since schools were forced to abruptly close in March and pickup online.The analysis of data from nearly 4.4 million U.S. students in grades 3-8 represents one of the first significant measures of the pandemic’s impacts on learning.But researchers at NWEA, whose MAP Growth assessments are meant to measure student proficiency, caution they may be underestimating the effects on minority and economically disadvantaged groups. Those students made up a significant portion of the roughly 1 in 4 students who tested in 2019 but were missing from 2020 testing.NWEA said they may have opted out of the assessments, which were given in-person and remotely, because they lacked reliable technology or stopped going to school.“Given we’ve also seen school district reports of higher levels of absenteeism in many different school districts, this is something to really be concerned about,” researcher Megan Kuhfeld said on a call with reporters.The NWEA findings show that, compared to last year, students scored an average of 5 to 10 percentile points lower in math, with students in grades three, four and five experiencing the largest drops.English language arts scores were largely the same as last year.NWEA Chief Executive Chris Minnich pointed to the sequential nature of math, where one year’s skills — or deficits — carry over into the next year.“The challenge around mathematics is an acute one, and it’s something we’re going to be dealing with even after we get back in school,” he said.NWEA compared grade-level performance on the 2019 and 2020 tests. It also analyzed student growth over time, based on how individual students did on assessments given shortly before schools closed and those given this fall.Both measures indicated that students are advancing in math, but not as rapidly as in a typical year. A gunman opened fire inside of a Cheltenham Township, Pa. Walmart on Tuesday, leaving five people shot and several others with non-gunshot injuries, NBC Philadelphia reported, citing law enforcement officials. The incident took place around 6:15 p.m., and has since been contained. Eyewitnesses told NBC Philadelphia that the shooting took place at a cash register inside of Walmart.A gunman reportedly took the gun out of his waistband and shot five people during an altercation. A pregnant woman, who was not shot, was injured trying to get away. Two police officers were also injured during a fight trying to apprehend the suspect. The gunman reportedly fired 10 gunshots inside of the Walmart before fleeing. All eight victims are expected to survive. Two people were taken into custody after the suspected gunman and a possible accomplice tried to flee. 917
