CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three gang members charged in a violent crime spree that stretched from San Ysidro to La Jolla were in court Tuesday in Chula Vista for their preliminary exam. Michael Pedraza, Cesar Alvarado, and Britney Canal are accused of murdering a South Bay businessman last April and kidnapping and shooting a woman who witnessed it. Mya Hendrix was the first took take the stand. She's paralyzed and confined to a wheel chair after being shot three times and left to die at Sunset Cliffs. The judge would not allow the media to show the faces of the defendants in court, but they smirked during much of testimony. Hendrix, 19, said she was friends with the defendants and had done drugs with some of them. She says they turned on her because they thought she stole a backpack with ,500 in it. Hendrix says they kidnapped her, tortured her with a game of Russian Roulette and tased her multiple times. At one point, she testified she was forced to call her mom for ransom money. “I told her I needed ,500. My life depended on it and she was asking me why, and I was forced to say that I had robbed somebody. I wasn’t allowed to say that people had thought I took something from them, they forced me and tased me told me to say that I robbed them," said Hendrix. Prosecutors said the trio drove Hendrix to various locations. "They were telling me they were going to put me into sex trafficking. They were telling me they were selling me to this guy they had at the park. They had me like tied up in this garage with duct tape over my mouth and they were tasing me in front of people," said Hendrix. Prosecutors say Hendrix was in the backseat when the defendants shot and killed a South Bay businessman. According to investigators, the suspects thought 59-year-old Mario Serhan was an undercover cop who was following them. The defendants are charged with fatally shooting him in the head. Witnesses found Serhan slumped over the steering wheel of his car with a gunshot wound to the head. The vehicle was coasting through the intersection of Industrial Blvd. and L Street before it collided with a storage business, police said. Hendrix testified that the trio celebrated the killing. "Ms. Canal was excited. She was like, "good shot babe" cause he was like, "I got him in the dome," testified Hendrix. She said the defendants cleaned the car with bleach to remove any gun powder residue. Shortly after, she says they took her to Sunset Cliffs and tried to murder her. "I walked down the stairs with the gun pointed at me the whole time, pleading for my life, crying he told me to take it with some dignity and not to die like a little *&^%$ and that’s when he shot me the first time, which the bullet hit my ear and I stayed standing. The second time is the one that went in my neck and out of my chest on this side that’s the one where I fell and broke my spinal cord and then as he was walking away he turned around and shot me a third time in the hip. All I could do was lay there and pray," testified Hendrix. She was found hours later near the surf by tourists at Sunset Cliffs. A fourth defendant, Francisco Aranda, is also charged in the case. He's accused of setting Hendrix up. Hendrix says she thought they were friends, but Aranda believed she had stolen from him. Testimony continues Wednesday morning. A judge will decide if there is enough evidence for this case to go to trial. 3431

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — The Sweetwater Union High School District will allow almost 300 employees to retire early, to balance a budget tens of millions of dollars in the red. "It was in our best interest to work with the district,” President Gene Chavira of the Sweetwater Education Association said. The teachers’ union president said this is part of the district’s "Budget Solutions Plan." They first added two furlough days to all staff this school year. In November, the Board of Trustees also agreed to offer employees who are 50 years or older and have worked for the district for at least 10 years, the option to resign then retire from the district. Eligible staff members were given two options for bonuses: Leave at the end of the year (December 2018) to receive 85 percent of their annual salary, spread over a given number of years; or leave at the end of the school year (June 2019) to receive 60 percent of their annual salary, spread over a given number of years. At the last union election, Chavira said 87 percent of the union members voted for the district’s plan.By Wednesday’s deadline, nearly 300 employees signed up for the early retirement package. One hundred forty-four are teachers, and the rest are either school staff or management. Of the 144 teachers, 94 of them have chosen to leave in December 2018. While some voiced the concern of teachers leaving in the middle of the school year, Chavira said the district employs many capable teachers who are qualified.“If one your teachers was the teacher that left, then someone else is going to take it. And in most cases, it's someone that's already there, who will assume those classes,” Chavira said. While the hope is the change from a seasoned to a potentially less-experienced teacher in the middle of the school year will not affect student success, the district said the finances made sense. According to the current salary schedule, veteran teachers get paid as much as 8,000 a year, compared to new hires at ,000. "In the long run, it's a savings,” Chavira said. (KGTV) - State investigators have cited an in-home daycare in Bonita for feeding melatonin to children.10News learned a criminal investigation is underway into Brenda Saucedo Family Child Care. The daycare has had a license since 2007, according to the California Department of Social Services.6-year-old Julius had been at his new daycare for two weeks when he was put down for his first nap time in early August. Julius says he was handed a red drink with white flakes in it."I thought it was Gatorade but it didn't taste like Gatorade," said Julius.Julius drank it all."They told me to lie down, and I fell right asleep," said Julius.When he awoke, he still felt sleepy. After he told his family, his mother Vanessa Cherry says a complaint was filed with the state's Child Care Licensing Program, sparking a surprise inspection. Weeks later, she received their report."I felt angry. I felt like I let my son down. You feel betrayed," said Cherry. Based on interviews and documentation like text messages, state investigators cited the daycare for "providing Melatonin to the daycare children to alter their behavior and/or help them sleep." A spokesperson with the California Department of Social Services says "the licensee told CSDD staff that she administered melatonin to school-age children and melatonin was found on the premises.""How dare you give my kid something without telling me without my acknowledgement ... you don't have the right," said Cherry.Cherry filed a report with deputies, who started an investigation.Melatonin is a natural supplement used as a sleep aid. Possible side effects include dizziness and nausea. There have been a handful of recent criminal cases across the country involving daycare providers and melatonin. Three daycare providers in the Chicago area were charged with giving children melatonin gummy bears before nap time. In Oregon, a woman sentenced to 21 years for feeding melatonin to kids while she went to a tanning salon and the gym. Some of those kids now complain of problems with their sleep cycles.When 10News knocked on the door of the daycare, a woman identifying herself as the owner told us the only child she fed melatonin to is her own child because he has autism. As for Julius, she told 10News she didn't put anything in his drink. When pressed on the specifics of the licensing division report, she said, "I don't want to comment on that any more.""They should be shut down. Your child should be safe in a place you entrust with their safety. This is a parent's worst fear. She agreed to end the practice, and stated that she understands the danger of administering melatonin and that she will not do so again ... The licensee must post a copy of the complaint investigation report on site, provide a copy to the parents/guardians of children in care at the facility, and provide a copy to parents/guardians of all newly enrolled children in the next 12 months. She also agreed to review educational materials on children’s personal rights in child care, as set forth in state regulations, and provide a summary of the material to the analyst assigned to the case. If this corrective action is not completed, the facility may be subject to civil penalties. In addition, because of the seriousness of the incident, the licensee will be required to attend a follow-up meeting with CDSS staff to discuss the incident and any other concerns about the facility’s compliance with regulations. Such meetings may lead to additional licensing action.The inquiry conducted by CDSS found no evidence of injuries or complications to the children.CDSS takes the allegations in this case seriously. The Department cannot confirm or deny the existence of an investigation. (KGTV) - A Chula Vista high school student was arrested on suspicion of posting a threatening message on social media.Sweetwater Union High School District said they notified police Wednesday that a threat against Olympian High School was posted on social media. A student notified the administrators after school of the social media posting, according to Chula Vista Police.The threat was thought to be credible at the time, police said, and alluded to a student "becoming a school shooter."Chula Vista Police officers identified the poster as a 16-year-old 10th-grade student and took her into custody at her home Wednesday night. Police said the girl admitted to making the social media post "as a joke and thought it would be funny."Officers searched the students home but did not find any weapons. According to the district, officers do not believe any actual incident would have occurred.The student was arrested and taken to Juvenile Hall for making the threat.The Olympian High threat is the latest in a series of threats made against San Diego County schools in the weeks since the tragic high school shooting in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14.RELATED STORIES: 1206

(KGTV) - More than a dozen people were forced out their homes late Tuesday night after a driver crashed her car into a fire hydrant at an apartment complex in Chula Vista, causing water to be sent nearly 30 feet into the air.At around 11:45 p.m., Chula Vista police responded to reports of a geyser spewing water into the air on 3rd Avenue.The geyser, from a broken fire hydrant, flooded a nearby apartment complex, forcing the evacuation of 16 people from six units, four of which were heavily flooded.A black car that struck the hydrant tried to leave just after the wreck, but the car's female driver eventually came back to speak with officers. Police questioned the young driver, but she was released.City crews spent a few hours helping clear the water from the apartments. 807
