BEIJING, July 7 -- Chinese state-owned banks, including Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, intend to boost the contribution of the credit card business to their profits as they tap the rising demand to use plastic to pay for purchases.     ICBC, the country's biggest lender, expects to boost its credit cards in circulation to 50 million at the end of 2009 from 33 million now, Li Weiping, president of the Beijing-based bank's card center, told Shanghai Daily on Saturday in Shanghai. The credit card business accounts for about 10 percent of the bank's intermediary business, or fee-based income, and is one of the main contributors.     Chinese banks are shifting from its traditional deposit-lending business as they expand their profit avenues.     ''We expect the contribution (of credit cards to profit) to grow by 2 to 3 percentage points annually,'' Li said.     ICBC is among the country's "big four" state-owned banks to speed up the credit card business while their smaller joint stock rivals have already an edge in the market.     China Merchants Bank, the sixth biggest lender on the Chinese mainland, has one-third share of the credit card market. Other state-owned banks, including Agricultural Bank of China, said they are seeking growth as they pursue prudent risk control.     China Construction Bank expects to break even on its credit card business next year, said Wu Huitao, deputy general manager of the bank's credit card center. CCB targets card numbers at 20 million at the end of this year, from 16 million now, Wu said.     Credit cards will be the most important consumer credit product after mortgages, with profit forecast to reach US.6 billion by 2013, accounting for 22 percent of total consumer credit profits, said New York-based McKinsey & Co.

BEIJING, June 6 -- Shareholders of China Vanke Co, the country's largest publicly traded property developer, have approved a decision to spend 100 million yuan to rebuild homes in quake-stricken Sichuan.     The company has been under fire from netizens since the earthquake after Wang Shi, its high-profile chairman, announced the real estate giant would donate 2 million yuan to the quake-hit areas and told his employees not to donate more than 10 yuan.    In the face of the ensuing barrage of criticism by the media and netizens, Wang apologized on his blog. At yesterday's meeting, he apologized to shareholders as well: "I want to apologize unconditionally to all shareholders, I won't try to defend myself."     Wang also admitted his comments about quake donations have damaged Vanke's brand image and he was sorry for that.     As a lesson from this episode, Wang said, Vanke would have a spokesperson in the future and try to desist from doing anything that hits its share prices, as it did this time. Zhang said the decision of the shareholders to clear the funding also reflects the company's determination to contribute to the relief work in a big way.     Vanke's investments in Sichuan will be made over the next three to five years, Vanke had said in a previous statement to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.     The May 12 earthquake in Sichuan province destroyed 5.4 million homes and damaged 21.4 million, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs. More than 12 million people left homeless by the earthquake will have to be relocated.     "Vanke may build anti-quake homes there to broaden its property development," Bloomberg quoted Liu Xihui, a real estate analyst at Pingan Securities Co, as saying. "More developers may follow suit."     Vanke rose 4.7 percent to 20.5 yuan in Shenzhen trading on Wednesday. The stock has dropped 29 percent this year after almost tripling in 2007. Trading was suspended yesterday because of the meeting.

BUCHAREST, May 6 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin said here Monday that China and Romania share the same task of opening up a new era in their all-round partnership of friendship and cooperation.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political consultative body, delivered a speech at a session of the Romanian Senate on Monday evening.     In his speech, Jia explained China's policy and concept of peaceful development and mutually beneficial, win-win cooperation with other countries. They should continue to give a full play to the role of their joint economic commission, encourage and support their companies to increase contact and explore new ways and methods of cooperation.     Thirdly, the two countries should deepen cultural and humanitarian exchanges. They should continue exchanges and cooperation in such fields as culture, science, technology, education, sports, public health and tourism so as to add new content to bilateral links. GUANGZHOU/NANJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The first cross-Strait weekend chartered flight from China's mainland to Taiwan took off at 6:31 a.m. from Guangzhou, capital city of the southern Guangdong Province early Friday morning.     More than 100 mainland tourists aboard the Airbus A330 became the first group of people on a sight-seeing tour allowed to Taiwan amid warming cross-Strait ties. The flight has 258 passengers.     The historic flight by China Southern Airlines (CSA) is scheduled to land at Taipei Taoyuan Airport in Taiwan at 8:10 a.m. after a 1,124-km journey.     "I have been expecting to visit Taiwan, the Treasure Island, and my dream will finally come true today," mainland tourist Shi Anwei told Xinhua before boarding the plane. "I was too excited to sleep last night."     Following suit was a flight from Xiamen of eastern Fujian Province that took off at 7:16 a.m. The flight, MF881 by the Xiamen Airlines with 203 passengers, is expected to arrive at the Songshan Airport of Taipei at 8:51 a.m.     Each passenger witnessing the historical moment received a gift package from the airlines, which enclosed a model plane and map of Taiwan.     At a separate ceremony in East China's Nanjing City marking thecity as the fifth new city to conduct the cross-Strait chartered flight, Zheng Lizhong, mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS) Executive Vice Chairman, said the start of the weekend chartered flight and beginning of the mainland tourists' visit to Taiwan "is destined to open a new chapter in the cross-Straits cultural and economic communications."     A high-ranking mainland aviation official said that since Shanghai was chosen as the first city for cross-Strait flight operation five years ago, "there has been a small step each year, but they have amounted to a major step in the past five years."     "The ever more frequent and convenient flights across the Straits are not only improved means of transportation, they are also an emotional and cultural bridge for the people, and changed the way of thinking of both sides," the official said.     However, he said, real direct flight hadn't been realized yet as all of the planes flew to Taipei by way of Hong Kong.     Quoting Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the great pioneer of Chinese democratic revolution, the official said, "the real success is still in front and we need to work harder."     The first chartered flight from Nanjing started at 8:05 a.m.     Some 760 Chinese mainland tourists from Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Xiamen and Guangzhou started the first weekend charter flight to Taiwan on Friday, three weeks after the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits and the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation met last month.
