DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - A trio of teenage girls is helping the Community Resource Center fill their "Holiday Baskets" this year.The girls, Lucie Babcock, Talia Buzi and Abbie Raysman, donated hundreds of dollars' worth of toys, food and household items to the CRC's yearly campaign."It's just a great feeling to know you're givine and helping people have an amazing holiday season," Lucie says.The three girls held a bake sale earlier this month to raise money. They sold muffins, cookies, brownies, coffee and orange juice in their Carmel Valley neighborhood."It was so much fun," says Abbie. "Lucie's brother was dancing in the middle of the street with a sign, stopping traffic."The bake sale raised around 0, which the girls used on a shopping spree for the donations.The CRC Holiday Baskets program helps 1,600 needy families in the North County. It gives them toys, clothes, food and more for the Christmas season. Organizers say they're impressed with the young girls' desire to give, and that it's small donations like these that help them serve so many people.Lucie started donating to Holiday Baskets when she was 9 years old. Over the years, her bake sale grew to the point where she needed help. Her friends Talia and Abbie were happy to lend a hand."I think it's a really great organization," says Talia of the CRC. "This is a great way to help people who are less fortunate."Lucie says it's all about making sure other kids get the same feeling of joy she does during the holidays."That's what I try to think about, that a kid who's not expecting anything can wake up and have something like this. Deputies arrested a Palm Beach County bookkeeper Saturday on accusations of stealing money from her employer to pay for a new vehicle.Erma Rios, 26, of suburban West Palm Beach, wrote and signed company checks to purchase a Land Rover from a dealership, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office report.Rios’ boss reported more than ,000 missing from the bank account of his Palm Beach Gardens business in January 2017.Bank records show Rios, a bookkeeper at the business, allegedly wrote out two checks to a used car dealership in December 2016.The first check written out by Rios was a ,000 down payment addressed to the used car dealership for a 2011 Land Rover, an arrest report states. The second check was written out a few weeks later as a final payment to the car dealership for ,000.Deputies interviewing a car salesman report him saying he sold the vehicle to Rios. He said she wrote and signed the checks, and then presented them to his as payment, he said in the report.Court records show a warrant for Rios arrest was signed in April 2017.One year later, she was arrested and booked into the Palm Beach County Jail. DENVER — Footage from a Ring Bell camera shows a runaway UPS truck careening backward down a street in a Denver neighborhood, and smashing into several parked vehicles.Erika Gaum said she was in her front yard with her young son cleaning out flowerbeds a few minutes before the crash happened on Dec. 2."I had just gone in to put him down for his nap," she said. "About 10 minutes later, I heard this massive explosion."Gaum said she peeked out the front door and saw a UPS truck pushed up against the neighbor's cars.Moments later, another neighbor came out and told her the UPS truck had sideswiped the Gaum's tow truck and trailer, too."After it hit the trailer, it kind of skidded along and then hit the fender and ripped the tire and bent the rim," she said.Gaum added that the impact knocked out rivets, busted a mirror, flattened two tires and knocked out a headlight.The UPS truck then slammed into three parked cars, one of them a Ford Taurus.Gabriela Agustin-Sanchez said her dad had put a lot of hard work and hard-earned cash into fixing up the Taurus."Cars are his passion. He's always working on cars, but that one was one of his most prized possessions, and he was very proud of it," she said.The back of that Taurus is now a crumpled heap of metal, rubber and plastic.According to the police report, the UPS driver, 21-year old Sagar Garung, said he was stopped to make a delivery and when he jumped back in and attempted to start the truck, it failed to start."Then it jumped out of gear and traveled southbound in reverse, at an unknown rate of speed, and collided with (Gaum's truck and the three cars,)" the report stated.Gaum said she and her husband own an auto shop."We're heading into the holidays and this is our work truck, so we kind of need some action," she said.Gaum added that she reached out to UPS several days in a row, to ask about the status of their damage claim, and each time was told "somebody will contact you by the end of the day.""That has yet to happen," she said.KMGH reached out to UPS to ask if there was an issue with the brakes, if the driver is still working for UPS, if there was another person on board the UPS truck, why the delay in reaching out to the victims and if UPS will be taking care of the damage.Matthew O'Connor, the senior manager of media relations, sent an email stating: "We’re thankful that everyone is safe. UPS’s highest priority is the safety of our employees and the communities we serve. We’re investigating the situation, cooperating with the responding authorities on their investigation, and will respond accordingly."Garung was issued a citation for operating an unsafe vehicle.Gaum said with everything that has happened in 2020, she's grateful no one was injured in the crash.Still, she hopes UPS responds sooner, rather than later."Call me UPS. DENVER – The man accused of shooting and killing three people at a Thornton, Colorado Walmart on Wednesday night will likely learn if prosecutors will seek the death penalty against him Monday afternoon.Scott Allen Ostrem, 47, made his first court appearance Friday morning in Adams County. Formal charges have yet to be filed against him, but his arrest warrant carried first-degree murder after deliberation charges.Prosecutors are expected to seek similar first-degree murder charges, and an attorney for the state said at Friday’s hearing that “there’s going to be multiple counts in this case.” District Attorney Dave Young said they might also pursue attempted murder charges."When you fire into a crowd of people you don't necessarily need to fire more than one shot to be convicted or charged with attempted murder," Young said.Prosecutors initially argued that they should have until Wednesday to file formal charges, saying that they needed to interview more people and review more video footage to determine who, if anyone in particular, Ostrem was targeting in the shooting.Police and the FBI say they still have not determined a motive for the Wednesday night shooting, which left three people dead.First-degree murder convictions carry sentences of either life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty in Colorado, but prosecutors must say which penalty they are seeking when the initial charges are filed. But only three people remain on Colorado's death row, and no one has been executed in the state since 1997.Young would not comment on whether he would seek the death penalty for Ostrem.And though prosecutors had asked for more time, Judge Ted Tow set the advisement for 1:30 p.m. Monday. The affidavit in the case will remain sealed until at least then.Ostrem was represented by two public defenders in court Friday, and said little, other than answering “yes” when asked questions about his understanding of the proceedings by the judge. He was dressed in a blue jail jumpsuit.One of his attorneys asked the judge to have police officers re-seize the Walmart store, saying she was concerned that some evidence could be compromised. She said her team hadn’t been allowed into the store, and that she had concerns that evidence could be destroyed once the store reopens.But the judge denied the request, saying he had no authority to order police or Walmart to do anything.A Walmart spokesperson told Denver-based KMGH on Friday they were working to decide when the store might reopen.Police arrested Ostrem on Thursday morning more than 12 hours after the shooting occurred. An anonymous citizen tip alerted authorities to his presence in the area, police said, though FBI agents also spotted him in the area.
