(KGTV) -- The mother of one of the 15 Marines injured in a fiery training accident at Camp Pendleton said she panicked when she learned her son was one of the wounded.RELATED: Officials: 15 Marines injured in Camp Pendleton training accident“It made my heart hurt to see him for sure, you know, with his face all burnet and knowing how bad burns hurt,” said J.R. And he’s got a few abrasions here and there,” J.R. Koontz said of her son, who was released from the hospital. “He seems to be healing pretty well."J.R. Koontz said she flew to San Diego the morning after the accident and visited her son at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest.“It was really comforting because there was like eight Marines there in uniform. They stood there all night. They never leave him alone,” she said.Samuel Koontz posted on Facebook he has second and third-degree burns to his face but won’t have permanent scars.He wrote the vehicle, also called a Track, “Exploded and the track caught fire, me and my squad exited out multiple ways some being injured more than others. Me and some of my squad mates got out and went back to pull the rest of our brothers out that couldn’t do it for themselves for various reasons.”He also asks people to pray for the Marines still hospitalized and some badly injured.“it’s just kind of a traumatic thing I think when you go through something like that,” J.R. Koontz said. “I believe they put all the guys that were hurt in the accident in the wounded warrior battalion so that gives them time to go over what happened."The Marine Corps is not paying the flights and hotel stays for the families visiting the injured Marines. ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Carole Baskin of “Tiger King” fame is being sued for defamation by a former assistant. As part of the lawsuit, the daughters of Baskin’s former husband are seeking more information about what happened to their father, who disappeared mysteriously more than two decades ago. The amended complaint to an earlier lawsuit was filed Tuesday in state court in Tampa by Don Lewis’ three daughters as well as his former assistant, Anne McQueen. The lawsuit says Baskin defamed McQueen by posting a video diary entry on YouTube earlier this month in which she says McQueen played a role in Lewis’ disappearance. Lawyers for Baskin said they couldn’t comment on pending litigation. 700

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -  A group called "Take Back Oceanside" with some 300 members strong is vowing the clean up the filth and violence they say has crept into their neighborhood along the San Luis Rey riverbed.Organizer Drew Andrioff says the crime is out of control."We believe other coastal communities are giving the transients bus and train tickets here, and the city is limited in what they can do. It's gotten so bad no one wants to take their kids out. Police don't come down here after dark because the camps have traps....trip wires and sharp bamboo," said Andrioff.Police estimate nearly 500 homeless people are living along the riverbank.  The Oceanside Police Department has made over 1,000 arrests in that area since the first of the year.Lifelong Oceanside resident Donna McGinty says the crime is seeping into the city."Every atrocity imaginable is happening down there.  Prostitution is rampant.  The transient groups have their own little government down there and it's well organized," she said.Pictures taken by the neighborhood group show used needles, hundreds of shopping carts, heaping trash, a machete, and a polluted river. The group plans to attend the Oceanside City Council meeting on October 17 to ask for help. 1283

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- In a 5-2 vote Tuesday night, the Tri-City Medical Center's board of directors voted to suspend, indefinitely, care in its inpatient behavioral health unit. The Tri-City Healthcare District has operated a Behavioral Health Unit (BHU) for a number of years and a Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) since 2016. The CSU is already closed. According to an administrative staff report, the BHU averages roughly 12 patients per day.The unit provides critical care to a vulnerable population those who are suicidal or suffering from severe mental illness, but the board says keeping it open without making the required building changes could put those patients at greater risk. Tuesday night the Tri-City Healthcare District cited changes in federal regulations as one of the main reasons they will need to suspend services. Those regulations require hospitals to remove all "ligature" risks from rooms - or features that patients could use to hang themselves. The board said that the hospital's "drop" ceilings do not meet the requirements. At least one estimate put the cost to replace the ceilings at million dollars.Upgrading the ceilings is one item on a list of costly projects, a spokesperson for Tri-City Medical Center told 10News.  The overall renovation project will cost .5 million, which include updates to the HVAC system and making other upgrades to the facility to meet current ADA requirements.The board also says there's a shortage of psychiatrists and a budget shortfall in that ward of roughly million. The COO says the move protects the entire hospital from possibly having to close."That is a reason, that is one of the issues that we are facing, lack of psychiatric care for those patients," said Hospital COO Scott Livingstone. "The patients made our argument for us," said Livingstone referring to a patient recently saying she waited 48 hours to be seen.Livingstone went on to say, "You're concerned about a 45 minute drive for a mental health crisis, try a 45 minute drive if you're actively having a stroke and your brain is dying."As the energy in the room grew tense, the board reminded the public that suspending the unit gives the hospital the option to re-open it if a solution is found.The suspension, which could last up to one year, means that any North County residents or "5150 transports"  will be sent to hospitals much farther away. Police and sheriff's deputies say the added time it will take to transport "5150 transports" - or psychiatric patients - to Palomar Hospital in Escondido or San Diego County Mental Health will impact every neighborhood. "With the closure of your facility that will increase probably three to five hours, that's an officer off the street in your city- do you want that?" said La Mesa Police Captain Ray Sweeney.Captain Sweeny told the board roughly one in five adults experiences mental illness each year.A man who battles severe mental illness told the board that the psych unit at Tri-City has saved him countless times. "When I get to the hospital everything changes," he said. "From the moment the first nurse touches my arm, I feel like I'm being touched by an angel."  Some doctors spoke in favor of the move; saying the entire staff supports the decision to suspend the psych ward, but increase outpatient services.The unit is scheduled to close on October 2, 2018. 3558
