BEIJING, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Although China registered the first monthly trade deficit last month in six years, that would be temporary as the demand for imports is likely to ease with the expected moderation in domestic fixed asset investment, said an economist of JP Morgan Chase."With an anticipated recovery in developed economies this year, Chinese exports should improve gradually over the coming months," said Jing Ulrich, chairman of China Equities and Commodities of the U.S. bank in a research note Saturday. That will be proved by the forward looking new export orders component of China's official PMI (Purchasing Managers's Index) which increased to 53.7 in March from 50.3 in February, she said.China reported trade deficit of 7.24 billion U.S. dollars in March, the first since April 2004, as exports rose 24.3 percent year on year, while imports jumped by 66 percent."The pace of China's export recovery and dynamics of imported inflation will shape the country's approach towards currency valuation. A return to the policy of gradual RMB appreciation would allow China to mitigate imported inflation and promote domestic consumption by boosting household purchasing power in local currency terms," she said. She noted that in the longer-run, more flexibility in China's currency regime would allow the central bank to set monetary policy with greater independence from the U.S. Fed Reserves.

BEIJING, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Residential land prices in 35 major Chinese cities grew 8.63 percent on average in 2009, a Ministry of Land and Resources report published Friday said.Land prices for commercial buildings grew at a slower rate, 5.54 percent, while industrial land prices rose 2.04 percent. The report's release comes after land plots in major Chinese cities sold for record prices at auction, adding to concern that increased land prices have driven up housing prices. The ministry said in March residential property prices rose an average 25.1 percent from a year ago to 4,474 yuan (655.6 U.S. dollars) per square meter nationwide last year. The report also said land sales climbed 63.4 percent from a year earlier to 1.59 trillion yuan in 2009.Land supply for construction increased 44.2 percent year on year to 319,000 hectares in 2009 as the government accelerated infrastructure and property construction to boost domestic demand and ensure economic growth, the report said.

BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland will adopt new measures to facilitate cross-Strait travels, including opening more outlets to issue travel and entry permits to Taiwan travelers, a spokesman said here Wednesday.Travelers from Taiwan can get travel and entry permits upon arrival at three new air terminals in Tianjin, Ningbo and Jinan starting May 25, Yang Yi, the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman said at a press conference here. The move will increase the number of such terminals in the mainland to 23.To travel to the mainland, Taiwanese need a travel pass and an exit permit issued by the Taiwan authorities. They are also required to obtain an extra mainland travel pass and entry permit.According to Yang, public security departments in southern China's Guangdong Province have also been authorized to reissue from May 25 travel passes to those who have lost their documents or whose documents have expired.Currently, only seven provincial and municipal police departments are authorized to handle this issue. The travel pass, named "Taiwan Compatriot's Pass to the Mainland," is valid for five years and is similar to the identity card Taiwanese use in the mainland."As more and more Taiwan people come to the mainland for making investments, travels, work, study, plus living, the mainland will improve its entry and exit management system based on the needs of Taiwanese people," Yang said.He also confirmed the mainland's and Taiwan's air service associations would soon hold a meeting to discuss other matters, including adding more direct cross-Strait flights.

NANNING, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Three people were killed and one was missing amid heavy rains that pounded a scenic city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region for the past two days, Guangxi's flood-control and drought relief headquarters said Saturday.Continuous rainstorms triggered mud-rock flows Thursday night in Ziyuan County of Guilin City, killing three people there, the headquarters said.On Friday morning, a fisherman was swept away by rain-triggered floods in Gongcheng County of Guilin.Rainstorms had incurred property losses to about 19,000 people in Guilin as more than 30 houses collapsed, 1,100 hectares of farmland were inundated and many public facilities were damaged. The economic damage was estimated at 13.2 million yuan (1.9 million U.S. dollars). In southern province of Guangdong, three rainstorms pelted Guangzhou, the provincial capital, over the past week, with rainfall up to 440 mm, a record high in 25 years. The precipitation equalled to a quarter of the city's annual rainfall, according to meteorological statistics, said Lin Liangxun, Guangdong's chief weather forecaster.Guangdong has reported one missing. Rescuers had to carry first-aid materials on their shoulders to the stranded population.Water level in the worst-hit Shanxi Town reached 2.7 meters in the street, said Zhang Shanwen, Party chief of Shanxi Town.Weather forecast said a new round of rains will hit the region on Sunday and Monday.

BEIJING, April 3 (Xinhua) -- China will launch a two-month campaign to inspect work safety nationwide on April 5, according to the work safety commission of the State Council, or the Cabinet.Serious accidents took place in succession in some areas and industries recently, which shows negligence and loopholes in work safety management and serious violations to laws and regulations, said a circular issued by the commission. The inspection would focus on work safety in mines, the chemical industry, transportation and fire-works mills, among others. The campaign would include self-examination by enterprises, government inspection and public supervision.Enterprises are required to complete self-examination in April and local governments to conduct inspection in May, while the commission would dispatch supervision teams to check their work. The nationwide campaign comes days after 153 coal miners were trapped in a flooded coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province, which will be China's worst mining disaster in more than two years if the miners cannot be saved.
