SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A senior "hero" leapt into action when she saw a man snatching a neighbor's package in the La Jolla area.On a quiet afternoon last week, Gillian Ackland was in her living room when she saw an unfamiliar white car park right in her cul-de-sac off Colima Street in Bird Rock."It felt kind of strange," said Ackland.Next door was a big package sitting outside her neighbor's door.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhood"The car suddenly starts backing up diagonally. I realize he's going for the package, and I run out the front door, saw him with the package and ran to his side of the car," said Ackland. Her neighbor's Ring camera captured it all. In the video, a man is seen walking up to the door, grabbing the big package and a smaller one. As he starts running to his car, so does Ackland, who yells, "That's not yours!" three times. He shoves the package in the back seat, but the door didn't fully close."There was adrenaline going," said Ackland.Ackland sensed her chance."I knew I had a few seconds and I could do something - and I did it," said Ackland. She opened the back door and tried to pull the package out. The package starts to fall out, but not far enough, as the car drives off. Ackland has no regrets."The injustice of all kept me going. I just felt it's not right, and I just thought I could get the package away from him," said Ackland.Another neighbor took a photo of the car showing an Uber sticker on the front windshield. Inside the package was a side table. She says the neighbor missing the package thanked her profusely. He told 10News she is a "superhero neighbor.""It's actually a little embarrassing," said Ackland. The video was shared on the "Neighbors by Ring" app."It's important that neighbors look out for each other. Some might call me crazy, but I think I'm adventurous. I've led an adventurous life and that's who I am," said Ackland.A police report was filed. 10News reached out to Uber and sent them the images of the driver and car, but have yet to hear back. 2049

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A World War II veteran is being honored not only for his service to our country but to the San Diego community. With the help of former students, current students, and staff at Hilltop High School in Chula Vista, the library was dedicated to World War II veteran Tom Rice. The lifelong Coronado resident was an Army paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division on D-Day. He was the first to jump out of his C-47 after it crossed the English Channel.RELATED: Retired Chula Vista teacher grateful for war hero's inspirationRice taught U.S. government in the Sweetwater Union High School District for more than 30 years, mostly at Hilltop High. The surprise was unveiled to Rice on Thursday. "Everyone has given me their grace, and I have nothing to return but just my presence, and that was it. So this might be a closure for me, to come back to the old stomping grounds where I spent most my working days, 30 some years," said Rice.RELATED: Coronado D-Day veteran parachutes out of plane over NormandyThe idea to honor Rice initially came from two former students, Kathy Cappos Hardy and Suellen Butler. The two women say Rice didn't talk about the war when he was a teacher; it wasn't until years later they learned of his bravery. "We are honored to know him and honored by what he did for us as students and what he did for our country," said Cappos Hardy.Rice is well known for returning to Normandy to reenact his D-Day jump in honor of those who never made it home. He most recently made the jump at age 97. RELATED: Chula Vista honoring World War II Army veteran Thomas Rice"I do the jumping and try to remember them," said Rice. "Because they were killed, captured, or injured, or walked away, wouldn't talk about, and they didn't ever get a chance to grow up," Rice said to 10News in 2018.The Hilltop High library is officially now the Thomas M. Rice Library and Media Center. 1907

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Airbnb says it has cracked down on 17 listings in San Diego County that have received complaints or have violated policies surrounding parties. The rental booking company says the listings have either been suspended or removed from its platform following Airbnb's ban on parities and events at listings until further notice. The listings disciplined were located in the San Diego, Escondido, La Mesa, Clairemont Mesa, Linda Vista, Mission Bay Park, North Park, Pacific Beach, Peninsula, Southeastern San Diego, and Uptown.RELATED: San Diego shuts down Bankers Hill Airbnb ‘party house’ over COVID-19 concerns, other violations"In this current environment, it’s more important than ever before to prevent large parties and gatherings, and we support the efforts of local officials to put a stop to this irresponsible behavior," said John Choi, Airbnb’s Director of Public Policy in San Diego. "We hope that sharing out these steps today can raise further awareness of our 24/7 neighbor hotline so that we can strengthen the enforcement of our ban on party houses throughout San Diego County."The crackdown comes as Airbnb moves to address house parties at its listings during the pandemic. Earlier this month, a guest held an unauthorized party at a home in Sacramento County, ending with three people being shot and injured at the party. The house-sharing company has also made it more challenging for some guests under the age of 25 from booking rentals in their region unless they have a number of positive reviews. Last year, Airbnb also announced an expansion of manually screening high-risk reservations flagged by their automated systems.RELATED: San Diego residents, hosts back Airbnb ban on partiesParties have been a longstanding issue for San Diego hosts and neighbors in the past. Many told ABC 10News recently that they back the recent ban on parties. In San Diego, the city has failed to implement any new regulations on vacation rentals. The City Council passed an ordinance instituting rules in 2018 but rescinded it after a referendum funded by Airbnb. 2093

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego nonprofit is hoping to tackle the homeless crisis with a creative solution. The nonprofit, Amikas, envisions a San Diego where every woman and child has a safe place to live in.They hope to build emergency sleeping cabins, which could temporarily house homeless women and children as they look for a permanent place to live. "They're small, they're immediate, they go up in a matter of days, and so we can house a lot of people very quickly with this solution," said Shanna Welsh-Levin, President of Amikas.Designed by San Diego-based Treecycling, the homes are inexpensive and can be built within 24 hours. The cabins are mobile, able to be dismantled within a few hours. "We built these things like houses so they feel like homes," said Gabriel Stafford, with Treecyling. The house built this week is on display at the Meridian Baptist Church in El Cajon. The ultimate goal would be to run a two-year pilot program, creating an emergency cabin village to test the idea. Welsh-Levin is inviting city leaders and the community to come to learn more about the effort. 1105

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego mother is responding to a disturbing video showing a woman screaming racial slurs and threats at her son, a black man, outside a downtown luxury apartment building early Tuesday morning.Shawni Crawley told 10News the incident occurred while her 29-year-old son, Rodney Jackson, was working as a security guard at the Pinnacle on The Park apartments located at 424 15th St. in San Diego's East Village neighborhood. The video, posted by Jackson's brother, doesn't clearly reveal the woman's identity. In his public Facebook post, his brother wrote: "A snippet of an incident with my brother and a racist white woman downtown San Diego!!! This is America smh."The video, obtained by 10News, shows the woman calling Jackson the N-word repeatedly during the two-minute confrontation.WATCH: Man who experienced verbal attacked in Downtown San Diego is sharing his story"If you're going to act like a n-----, then I'm going to call you n-----," the unidentified woman shouts at Jackson. "I don't [expletive] care!"The woman then tells Jackson to put his head down, then says, "that's why we do what we [expletive] do."Jackson is heard asking the woman what action she was referring to, but she never clarifies her threat.According to Jackson's mother, the woman was kicked out of a party at the 45-story apartment building. The woman told Jackson she didn't have a ride home and requested he call her a cab. While waiting in the reception area for the cab to arrive, the woman began insulting other tenants. Jackson then asked her to wait outside, which sent the woman on a profanity-laced racist rant.REPORT: Ways to help the combat racism; your apology is not enough"Whatever she was going through, she took it out on my son," said Crawley. She noted being proud of her son’s calmness and composure throughout the confrontation but was pained by what she saw in the video."As a mother of an African-American son, to raise him all these years and keep him away from it -- to see him to have to endure it at this age now and I'm not able to protect him and or do anything about it … I cried," said Crawley."We see the world is changing right now and people are coming together," Crawley added. "To have hope but then to see something like this and feel like you're hopeless again is very hard."The disturbing video comes amid national-turned-global Black Lives Matter protests against racism and police brutality stemming from the in-custody death of a black man, George Floyd, who died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck as he begged for air.READ: George Floyd's death magnifies conversation about systemic racismSouthern California made recent national headlines for incidences involving racism. On May 4, a man walked into a Santee grocery store wearing a Ku Klux Klan hood. Photos of the man circulated online, stoking furor among community members, local leaders, and civil rights groups. Authorities identified the man and investigated the incident, then announced that "there was insufficient evidence to charge the man" with a crime.Four days later, at a Food 4 Less grocery store located near the Vons, San Diego County Sheriff's deputies responded to calls of a man wearing a swastika mask inside the store. Deputies asked the man to remove the cover to which he complied. On May 12 at Westview High School in the Torrey Highlands in San Diego's North County, a student's Snapchat's racist post spurred outrage among students and parents. In a screenshot shown to Team 10, the post from the student said: "god i really f------ wish the south won the civil war. i wish i had a f------- slave to do my work for me." Another student responded, "same."RELATED: Webinar: Panel Q&A on Racism in AmericaThe school's principal responded to the incident saying, "these actions will not be tolerated."Just north of San Diego, the mayor of Temecula resigned after facing raging criticism over a June 2 email he sent to a constituent stating he didn't "believe there's ever been a good person of color killed by a police officer."The Anti-Defamation League previously said during the coronavirus pandemic, they have seen attacks on minority communities, including an increase in anti-Semitism."History teaches us that during times of crisis people are looking for a scapegoat. During these times of COVID-19 we have seen the AAPI community targeted, as well as other minority communities, including an uptick in anti-Semitism. We are here for the community 24/7 and hope the San Diego community will come together and reaffirm that San Diego is no place for hate," an ADL statement read. 4633
