Nine-year-old Jacob Thompson is your average kid. His obsessions include Minecraft and Legos, and he's a huge "Star Wars" fan.He's also a photographer, singer and comedian, according to his stepmother, Tara Artinyan. And most of all, he really, really loves penguins.But Jacob has Stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma, and doctors told his family in early October he probably only had a month to live.So they'll celebrate Christmas early this year, and Jacob wants people to celebrate with him by sending him cards, his mother, Michelle Simard told CNN."He got some cards from this Halloween, and he opened up and saw them and it was like getting a gift. He read it to us and had a big smile his face and his nose scrunched," Jacob's father, Roger Guay, told CNN in a phone interview. "He was excited to see what people had to say and it just brightened his day."Fighting a long battleJacob was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma when he was 5. According to the American Cancer Society, only half of children diagnosed with the disease reach the five-year survival mark.After Jacob was admitted to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital on October 11, doctors discovered that the neuroblastoma had spread to his head and was incurable, according to a GoFundMe page set up by his mother."People have called him an old soul and I believe it because he has taught us so much about life and about people," said Guay. "He's accomplished everything that he needed to do by 9 years old, and a lot of people don't accomplish that, ever."An early ChristmasArtinyan said the family decided to "fast-forward" Christmas to give Jacob one last celebration.And for him, that means a lot of snow, a decked-out tree, and of course, a real-life Santa Claus.But before his improvised Christmas celebration takes place in early November, Jacob asked for cards from anyone around the world who wanted to share his Christmas spirit.And only five days after he announced his wish, he has already received more than 100 cards from people all over the country -- and even beyond."We got over a hundred, and they're from all over the world. We have some from the Netherlands, from Australia, from Denmark," said Artinyan. "We've heard from all over the world at this point. New York is adding new measures to prevent people from dying while taking selfies at a waterfall in the Catskill Mountains.The picturesque Kaaterskill Falls is one of the most visited spots in southeast New York state. However, capturing the perfect photo for social media turned fatal for several people.“I cringe, when someone is where they shouldn’t be,” says Peter Innes with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. “Because they are just too close to the edge.”Four deaths in the past several years occurred due to the victims being too close to the edge, while taking or posing for photos. Officials say it’s now considered one of the riskiest activities at the park.“A lot of people would think about ice climbing or rock climbing, back country skiing,” says Robert Dawson, a forest ranger. “It’s actually picture taking, because everyone can do it now.”The park sees tens of thousands more visitors annually than they did just a couple decades ago. A lot of that is due to visitors posting photos on their social media platforms, attracting new visitors seeking similar photo ops.“Or they’ll put it on YouTube, and they wanna see how many hits they can get on it,” explains Dawson.“So, then they wanna make those really cool videos. That’s where they’re willing to take that extra risk.“Then people will see that and be like, ‘I wanna go up there.’” Two of the most recent deaths—in 2016—occurred after the state had already made safety changes.Officials added a staircase to prevent slipping, as well as fencing to keep people from the edge. However, people continued to walk around it despite the obvious park signage.   “We realized there was a problem because of the continued fatalities,” says Innes.Innes helped draft new regulations that went into effect this month.“People are now not allowed to get within 6 feet of the cliff’s edges themselves,” says Innes of the new policy. “They also can’t swim within 150 feet of the top of the falls.”Now, rangers like Dawson have the authority to ticket and even forcibly remove anyone putting themselves at risk.“Before I was just like, ‘Hey, I really don’t want you to do this,’ and some groups will listen some are like, ‘Hey, it’s a free country,’” says Dawson.If he could offer just one piece of advice to Instagram-happy trail goers, Dawson says, “You can still get that great picture; you can do it 10 feet away from the edge and you’ll get the same effect.” 2470

North Wind Heating and Air is a local family-run business proudly serving Macomb County for 28 years. Lisa Agostino signed a work order approving both a service call and repairs to her a/c unit. The part was installed that same day. After the part was installed she reached out to North Wind stating that she no longer agreed with the price of the replaced part. Ms. Agostino was offered a solution to the dispute. She agreed that the part would be returned to North Wind. In turn Ms. Agostino would not be charged. This is what occurred. Ms. Agostino has not been charged for the service call or the replacement part.Days later Ms. Agostino posted false statements about North Wind on-line. She represents that she paid for the service call and replacement part, which she did not. These statements significantly effected North Wind's business. North Wind is a small local business. Ms. Agostino's false and defamatory statements have not only effected the North Wind's business, but has had a direct negative effect on its ability to offer full time hours to its employees.Prior to filing the lawsuit North Wind reached out to Ms. Agostino requesting the removal of the false statements. She refused. North Wind is simply seeking the removal of these false on-line statements.North Wind will continue to proudly serve its customers. 1342

New research released today from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that vehicular crashes have increased in states where recreational marijuana is legal.The nonprofit organization took crash data from four states where recreational pot is legal: Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Colorado.The findings revealed crashes were up as much as 6 percent, when compared with adjacent states that don't have legalized marijuana.Now, the research doesn't prove marijuana is directly responsible for the increase, but it does show a correlation.  The organization’s president says we should all take these numbers as an early warning sign.“The real key is not so much the magnitude of the number as it is the direction we're seeing,” says David Harkey, president at Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. “And that we think this is a really good early indicator of the potential issues associated with this policy change of recreational use of marijuana.”There are still a lot of unknowns regarding marijuana in terms of how it affects the human body. For example, when someone is drunk, you can measure their blood alcohol content with a breathalyzer. However, there is no equivalent real-time test for measuring THC, the psychoactive component in marijuana. 1279
