CLEVELAND — A mother in Shaker Heights, Ohio said her daughter was ridiculed after asking her cheerleading coaches for a larger uniform. Mother Lakessa Taylor claims the fat-shaming didn't end there.Laylonie Dowdell, 16, rejoined the cheerleading squad at Shaker Heights High School this fall, but after a summer off, her uniform was a little snug.Her mother told her to request a new, larger one and the teen said what happened next left her speechless."They basically refused to order me a uniform because they said it held my boobs down," Dowdell said.She not only complained that her top was extremely tight, she told an assistant coach her pants were too small as well."She replied, 'I wonder why? You're eating too much,' and insisted I run laps back and forth to the stop sign and back until my ride got there," said Dowdell.Dowdell said she didn't want to show her two coaches she was upset, so her coping mechanism was to always smile and giggle."You're supposed to be my coach, she's supposed to mentor me, uplift me, but you're putting me down," said Dowdell.In a video from an away game in Medina, Ohio you can see Dowdell having to pull her uniform down.After struggling with it at another game in Mentor, Ohio she said she was approached by the assistant cheerleading coach while holding a hot dog and a pop.Dowdell said the coach asked her: "What are you putting in your mouth now? Why are you eating that?"Dowdell's mom said the hurtful comments left her daughter broken."We train our children to fend off bad things from other children, but we don't train them to defend themselves against adults," Taylor said.Taylor said as soon as her daughter told her what was going on, she notified the principal."I complained to the school on Monday. Today is Friday. I haven't heard anything from the school," said Taylor.While she hasn't heard anything from the school district, Taylor got a chance to talk with the assistant coach."She told me herself, 'Well, Laylonie was laughing and joking and so I didn't think there was anything wrong with what I said. Laylonie talks to me about her weight sometimes, so it was OK for me to say those things to her,' " said Taylor.Since coming forward and sharing her story, both coaches in question have resigned. WEWS was told the head coach planned to do so anyway at the end of football season."This is not the only complaint. We're talking about several. I've talked to four parents in the last 24 hours," said Taylor.In light of these allegations, the district is praising the head coach for her 23 years of service, calling her a devoted coach, a mentor and a "valuable member" of the athletic department."It's disturbing that the school is commending this lady for all that she has done," said Taylor.The district refused WEWS's requests for an on-camera interview, but a spokesperson said they take complaints of this nature very seriously.In the meantime, Dowdell said for the first time ever she's having issues with her body image."I know I'm pretty, I know I'm beautiful. But, when I look in the mirror I'm not as skinny as the next girl, or I can lose a few," said Dowdell.In a statement, the district said that despite these resignations, the investigation into these complaints will continue. 3290

(KGTV) — Coronado is getting a touch of Hollywood Saturday, as 200 stars are installed in honor of cinema's leading icons.As the city ramps up for the Coronado Island Film Festival Nov. 8-11, volunteers will place stars featuring the names of Hollywood actors and filmmakers along Orange Avenue to construct its own Coronado Walk of Fame.Coronado's cinematic history dates back more than 100 years. One of the most well-known films to showcase the island is "Some Like it Hot," which featured the Hotel Del Coronado. The hotel was also featured in other flicks like "My Blue Heaven," "K-9," and "The Stunt Man."Of course, Naval Air Station has hosted Hollywood stars as well. (KGTV) -- Navy officials say a helicopter crewman was killed last week in a fuel tank accident at Naval Air Station North Island.Officials say Aircrewman 1st Class Jonathan Clement was taken to the hospital after a fuel tank detached from an HH-60H Seahawk helicopter, striking him and a fellow officer on July 30.The 31-year-old later died at the hospital the following day, according to the Navy Times. The other sailor was treated and released from the hospital after suffering minor injuries, officials say.Both sailors were assigned to the “Firehawks” of North Island-based Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 85, the Times reported.The Navy Safety Center reported the incident on August 6, but only indicated that the helicopter crew was conducting ‘hot seat” training when the accident happened.Hot seat training is conducted so crews can practice switching out from an aircraft without turning off the engines.Clement was an 11-year Navy veteran originally from Florida. 1003

Companies can stop collecting employees’ payroll taxes starting Tuesday, September 1, after an executive order in early August gave workers a tax holiday.The deferral of payroll taxes applies to employees making less than 4,000 a year. Employees are taxed 6.2 percent that goes toward the Social Security Trust Fund and another 1.45 percent for Medicare.It’s a deferral because the payroll taxes are still due to the IRS by April 30, 2021, which they made clear in new guidance released last week with the US Treasury Department.What this means to employees: It depends on your employer. Starting September 1, employers can stop withholding taxes, but many business leaders have said they will not since the taxes will eventually be due. The decision is up to each company and is not required.If a company stops withholding payroll taxes, employees will have more money in their paychecks through the end of the year. Then on January 1, companies will need to withhold more from paychecks to collect all that is owed in April 2021.For employees making ,000 a year, the elimination of Social Security taxes would result in an extra per paycheck every two weeks. Assuming the employee has eight paychecks left in 2020, that would result in 2 in taxes deferred in 2020, which would be repaid in 2021. For employees making ,000 per year, those figures would be doubled.If an employee leaves their job before all of the appropriate taxes are collected, the guidance only states that companies can "make arrangements to otherwise collect the total applicable taxes from the employee."President Trump has stated he would “terminate” the tax if he was elected in November. Crammed inside her studio apartment in New York City, Janet Mendez is doing her best to stay healthy after contracting COVID-19 back in March. Recovering from the virus has been difficult, a pain only compounded by the massive medical bills that are now piling up.It was March 25 of this year, when the 33-year-old woman was first admitted to St. Luke’s Hospital in Manhattan. Unable to breathe, she was placed onto a ventilator by doctors. Her body was only getting 70 percent of the oxygen being pumped into her lungs.“The first couple of days I didn’t know who I was. It was scary because you see all of these people, ambulances coming in and out, people laying in beds,” she recalled. “I was so early on pretty much everything was being tested on me.”Mendez spent nearly three weeks in the hospital’s ICU. She was eventually discharged and sent home, but months later, she still has a hard time walking and even breathing. The pain continues to be so bad that the office administrator for a local Dominoes is only able to work one day a week.“The COVID affected my liver and my lungs,” she said. “They don’t know if I could catch it again, and now my immune system is worse than before, so now, I have to be extra careful.”Now, Mendez is dealing with another side effect from the virus: the bills.“There was this initial shock of seeing the bill,” she said.Just days after being sent home from the hospital, Mendez started receiving bills for her 19-day stay in the hospital. Congress has mandated that COVID related procedures be covered under the CARES Act, but many patients are discovering there are loopholes in legislation and they’re the ones responsible for paying.Initially, Mendez’s medical expenses totaled more than 0,000, and she has insurance.“How are you telling me I owe this much if Congress and all these people are saying you’re covered?
