SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After moving to San Diego almost three years ago, Derek and Terri Ruff are on a mission to experience everything the city has to offer. “Yes we are, it’s fantastic! We hardly leave the county, there’s just so much to do," said Derek.The couple moved here from New Mexico, and for nine years Derek's colon cancer seemed to be behind them. “I won’t say cancer-free, but I didn’t have any symptoms for years, until last May, whenever I came in for a checkup, and they discovered cancer again," said Derek.It was stage IV metastatic colon cancer.“It’s a lot. It’s a tough diagnosis, it’s really difficult to live through.”After three months of aggressive chemotherapy, Ruff's condition only got worse. His journey brought him to UC San Diego Health's Moores Cancer for a clinical trial, which unfortunately did not work. But he Ruff became a candidate for another trial involving natural killer cells created from stem cells.“These are patients who don’t have a lot of good options in terms of chemotherapy or immunotherapy," said Dr. Sandip Patel, a medical oncologist who is leading the trial at UCSD. Decades of research on natural killer cells have culminated in the new cancer treatment being developed by San Diego-based Fate Therapeutics.Fate is the first to mass produce cancer-killing cells from a type of stem cell called a human-induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC). "The concept of utilizing the stem cells that are within us, within our blood factory, within our blood marrow, to create a master bank of cells that we can utilize to program in different ways to fight cancer with cellular immunotherapy."The off-the-shelf, iPSC-derived natural killer cell cancer immunotherapy received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval to move into clinical trials in November 2018. Ruff is the first person in the world to receive the treatment and got his first dose in February.“Being the first is exciting but it was less so hearing that you have stage iv cancer and you don’t have much of a future, and now I feel hopeful, again," said Ruff.While it's too early to tell if the treatment is working, researchers are hopeful this treatment will one day help many cancer patients. 2212

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A shark advisory is being issued Tuesday after witnesses reported seeing a five-foot-long shark near Black's Beach. According to Mónica Mu?oz with San Diego Fire-Rescue, the advisory is in place from the Mushroom House north to Bathtub Rock, also known as Flat Rock. “Some witnesses reported seeing a shark of about five feet in length which does not reach the threshold of a significant threat. However, the number of witnesses and the feeding behavior observed influenced the lifeguards’ decision to issue the advisory,” Mu?oz said. Just after 12:30 p.m., a group of 25 surfers got out of the water at Black's Beach after reportedly seeing a shark eating a sea lion. Another group of people reported similar information to a lifeguard. In the same area, Mu?oz says lifeguards witnessed a large sea lion eating a fish. The department says there were either two separate sightings in the area, or witnesses all saw a sea lion feeding on a fish, but mistook it for a shark. “We are acting out of an abundance of caution,” Mu?oz added. Lifeguards are conducting active patrols in the area to let people know what witnesses saw. Mu?oz says lifeguards are advising against water activity; however, the water is not closed to people who choose to enter. Signs will also be posted in the area. 1316

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man whose bike was stolen, decided to track the thief himself. But instead of turning him in, he turned the situation into something positive. Rob Greenfield never thought he'd see his bamboo bike again. “I didn’t lock it because I was sitting 20 feet from it and then I heard a noise and I looked back and saw the guy speeding off into the night with it.” When he found the thief, he didn't turn him in. He pulled him in for a hug, forgave him and took his bike back.  “It’s one of a kind bamboo bike but really what makes it special is that I’ve biked across the United States on it doing good deeds," he said. "So I’ve traveled thousands of miles across the country.” The theft made him want to do more good deeds, right here in San Diego. “I decided that rather than turning that into a really negative situation I would turn it into a positive situation," he said. "Knowing the feeling of having a bike stolen I decided I wanted to give bikes to kids who have had their bikes stolen and can’t afford a new one.” Greenfield started a GoFundMe to raise money for bikes. Bikes that he would then donate to the Boys and Girls Club - to kids whose bikes were stolen. He says it's a lesson in kindness that he hopes the thief who took his bike, and the kids who were given bikes, will pass on.“I can crowd out the bad with lots of good. So one bike stolen so I can give away 10 bikes, he said. "In that way it just wipes that bad deed out.”Rob gave away 10 bikes Tuesday and says that there is enough left for him to do it again.  1614

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Across the county, doorbell camera video has caught 'grinches' behaving badly."Upsetting and makes me feel violated," said Catherine Butler, who lives on Palm Avenue in La Mesa.When Butler woke up Wednesday morning, she came upon a mess outside her home. A wreath hanging on the side of her home was on the ground. A lighted garland was cut and left in her yard. It's not right and it's very grinchy," said Butler.Surveillance video reveals the culprit: a man walking barefoot on her patio railing, yanking down her lights. There have been a plethora of videos posted this week of package thieves throughout the county, likely targeting Christmas presents. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Across California, the total number of COVID-19 cases are climbing.According to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the most recent statistics on COVID-19 show California's positivity rate is trending modestly upward in the 14-day average. The CDPH said hospitalization rates over the long term are showing a slight uptick in the 14-day average.If you want to know specific outbreak locations, many county public health officials we spoke with won't tell you, unless they decide it's relevant.On June 18, San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher was asked about the locations of recent community outbreaks. In response to the question, Fletcher said, "When we think that there is a danger to the public, then we will share a location. If there's something specific that the public needs to know, then we will, of course, do that. "But, to arbitrarily do that can undermine the confidence of people to cooperate with our contact racing investigations and would ultimately be more negative to our ability to slow the spread of coronavirus, then it would be positive," said Fletcher. "I understand the curiosity, and I understand the desire to know, but ultimately we have to make decisions we think in totality will balance out, giving us the best ability to confront the public health challenges that we face."Just north of San Diego County, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is taking a different approach.The county's COVID-19 website shares information about nursing homes and homeless shelters that meet certain positive test criteria. In the past, we've listed locations for communicable illnesses like measles, but COVID-19 has not proven to be infectious in the same way at this point in time."In San Luis Obispo County a spokesperson for public health wrote, "Our County Public Health Department does not plan to release specific details about the locations of businesses, gatherings and events (including protests) that may be connected with a cluster of cases, especially if those details could potentially be used to identify individuals involved. We may release general information, if we feel it will protect the health and safety of our community.""For instance, if we think there is a potential for wider exposure that may lead members of the public to believe that they were exposed or at higher risk. The only exception to this policy is that we HAVE released when a case, or cases have been linked to a residential care facility as those are known places where disease transmission is both common and serious due to the residential nature of the location and the fragility of the people living there," the spokesperson said."We are working diligently to trace contacts and identify any and all individuals who may be connected to known cases, and their personal privacy is a priority," the spokesperson said."At this time, due to the stance outlined above, I don't anticipate that we would move to a listing like what LA County has adopted, but I will share this website with our team for future consideration," the spokesperson said.A spokesperson for Kern County told us "No, this information is not available.
