SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Thousands of people got their vaccinations Saturday, to kick off this year's flu season. The vaccination event was held at four Kaiser Permanente locations in San Diego County.For Byron Frohm, a trip to Kaiser Permanente in Mid-September is an annual tradition. "I can't think of any reason not to get it," Frohm said. The reason he does get the flu shot is his perfect, 40-year flu-free record. He says the vaccinations help him ward off the dangerous bug. "This virus is very strong," Shreya Chandra, MD. said. "It is hitting our community, and getting the vaccination really is prevention."Last season, health officials recorded 77 deaths in San Diego County. In the 2017-2018 season, there were 343 deaths. This was the highest number of fatalities since the county began tracking flu data nearly two decades ago. Already this year, there has been one confirmed flu-related death. The county said a 74-year-old Chula Vista man died August 15, 2019, due to complications from Influenza B. All the more reason for 76-year-old Frohm to stick to his regimen. "At my age, I'm probably more susceptible," Frohm said. Other high-risk groups include pregnant women, people with asthma, diabetes, and other illnesses. Some symptoms of Influenza include high fever, severe body aches, nausea, sore throat, and fatigue. This could last up to two weeks. Many people mistake the signs to that of the common cold. Doctors say many people who have the flu do not show any symptoms. But they can still spread the illness."I can still carry it and pass it on to elderly parents or people who can potentially get really sick from this virus," Dr. Chandra said. That is why Dr. Chandra strongly recommends the annual vaccine. She believes the best treatment is prevention. "We have State-of-the-art care and medicine. We live in San Diego. But the point of this vaccination is that we never need State-of-the-art care. You never get sick in the first place," Dr. Chandra said. 1990

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- The owner of MetroFlex Gym in Oceanside said he is now in compliance with San Diego County's public health order after refusing to close his doors for months.Lou Uridel fought back against the closure orders of all gyms and fitness centers in California, saying he would lose the business he worked so hard to build if he closed his doors. Uridel also said he provides wellness services that don't fall under the order.Friday, Uridel received a letter from Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, to immediately close.The letter states that MetroFlex Gym was operating indoors in violation of state and county public health orders.Uridel quickly moved some fitness equipment on the sidewalk outside of his gym and is now getting a permit from the City of Oceanside to expand and build a more extensive outdoor gym.He said he would be closed down until later this week while he gets it all squared away, but some services inside will continue."We have nutrition supplement store, food pickup services," he explained.Before Dr. Wooten's letter was sent, Oceanside Police visited Uridel's gym a few times to try to gain voluntary compliance with the public health order.Uridel tells 10News he received positive feedback about his gym's cleanliness, and he went above and beyond to ensure the safety of employees and members."We hired a virologist, and they said the biggest things were capacity, social distancing, and airflow. So that's what we focused on," he said.Uridel said he purchased a high quality disinfecting spray gun for ,000 and bought six industrial-grade fans to circulate the air while leaving front and back doors open at his gym.He said the gym was disinfected every hour, equipment was moved to allow for social distancing, and capacity was limited to 20 percent."I've had 38,100 visits since May 8th, we have ten trainers here, and we've not had one outbreak," he said. "It's just like a nail in our back to be treated like an egregious violator. I've had death threats. I have people calling me a mass murderer, irresponsible and selfish; I don't see myself as selfish for trying to provide employment for ten trainers and staff."Uridel said had he followed the closure orders from the beginning and closed down his gym, he would lose the business he worked so hard to build."You can't keep throwing us on life support and expecting us to stay around," he said. (KGTV) — Thirty-four people were arrested after Border Patrol agents intercepted two smuggling boats in less than 24 hours.The first boat was spotted around 11:15 a.m. on Sunday by a Department of Homeland Security aircraft. Less than an hour later, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Air and Marine Operations agents were able to stop the vessel about one-mile southeast of Point Loma.Twenty-one people were arrested, including four who are alleged smugglers — two of which are U.S. citizens. The remaining 17 people on board were Mexican nationals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)---San Diego Fire Department recruiter Captain Jason Shanley reminds people all the time, "If you don’t see it it’s hard for you to know that you can be it."As the department's only full-time recruiter he spends his days making connections, trying to show not only kids but adults that being a firefighter is possible, no matter who they are or where they come from."The narrative is that tall white guys with mustaches are the ones that become firefighters and that’s just not true," saidShanley.Take Captain Shanley for instance. His path to the fire department was paved by members of an organization called Brothers United, a group of African American firefighters in San Diego."I started taking some classes, met some other firefighters, got a mentor and then here I am 20 years later," Shanely said.His passion for what he does and desire to share it made him a perfect fit when the department created the full time recruiting position four years ago."As a department, we really wanted to focus more specifically on and make an actual effort to recruit more diversity into our fire department," he explained.Captain Shanley says some of the biggest obstacles are simply educating people on what it takes to become a firefighter. And once they do know, then trying to help them get the training they need.EMT schools are spread out all over San Diego County; hard to get to for those in the middle of the city without transportation."So we're working to try to bring some of those classes and resources to be more centrally located so we can solve that equity issue and that’s part of what we’re doing in the department as we speak," said Shanley.While there is still work to do, Captain Shanley says it's important the department has someone like him dedicated to hiring staff representative of the community it serves."I want other people to know this is something you can do, it’s more than just a job, it’s a career." 1950
