SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A registered sex offender who broke into his next-door neighbor's home, where he raped and sodomized a 3-year-old girl, pleaded guilty today to four felony charges and is facing an 85-year prison term.Francisco Diaz, 47, entered his plea to four counts of forcible lewd acts on a child, and admitted serious prior felony convictions, according to Deputy District Attorney Claudia Grasso.Sentencing is scheduled for June 17.Last summer's attack occurred the morning of Aug. 11 in the 5200 block of Maple Street in Oak Park.RELATED: Man arrested after three-year-old says she was kidnapped and touchedDiaz broke a screen and curtain rod and climbed through a window of the sleeping child's bedroom. When the toddler woke up and cried while being sexually assaulted, Diaz carried her out through the window and was walking her toward his home when the defendant's mother saw them and wrapped the child -- who was naked from the waist down -- in a blanket.Police were called around 9:45 a.m. and Diaz was arrested.``It's a parent's worst nightmare,'' Grasso said following Diaz's arraignment last year. ``The violation, the betrayal, (it's just) horrific. I think that not only does it impact the victim but it impacts the entire family, who now have to look over their shoulder, who now cannot feel safe in their own home. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian Friday on Interstate 5 at the southern end of Balboa Park.The traffic fatality occurred shortly before 9 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway, near state Route 163 in downtown San Diego, according to the California Highway Patrol.It was unclear why the pedestrian, who died at the scene, was on the interstate, CHP public-affairs Officer Salvador Castro said.The fatality left three northbound lanes blocked in the area and tangled traffic for miles through late morning. 544

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Elected officials, including Escondido Mayor Sam Abed and San Marcos Mayor Jim Desmond, and a group of residents will urge the San Diego County Board of Supervisors Monday to join the federal government's lawsuit challenging California's sanctuary state law.The bill, signed by Gov. Jerry Brown in October, limits cooperation between California law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. It prohibits local agencies from holding some immigrants on the basis of federal detainers, asking about immigration status or sharing information with federal authorities not available to the public, among other provisions.Opponents believe the law obstructs the deportation of criminals by federal authorities."The sanctuary state law is not only unconstitutional, but it is a real threat to public safety because it forces local government to harbor and shield violent criminals," former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio said. "It is imperative that San Diego voters contact the five members of the Board of Supervisors before the vote tomorrow (Tuesday) to urge them to sign on to the lawsuit against the sanctuary city law."The news conference will be held 11 a.m. at the park behind iHeartMedia, 9660 Granite Ridge Drive.Proponents of the bill, including the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties, believe it makes communities safer and allows local enforcement to focus on their jobs.
