AKRON, N.Y. – 2020 has been a bit of roller coaster and for some, there's been more downs than ups. Before the pandemic, a roller coaster is exactly where you could find Eric Hall and his family. One summer day in 2019, something was getting in the way of his ride.“The guy did everything he could to get me in,” recalled Hall. “Which was not only super humiliating and humbling, but obviously at the same time it was very eye opening for me because something that I love to do, especially with my family, now my weight and my health was restricting me from doing that.”Hall knew he needed to change. But changing takes time, time he didn't think he had.“Prior to the pandemic, I was kind of hoping for more work from home, that's not necessarily what I had in mind was this,” said Hall. With an opportunity to be more healthy. Hall jumped on it. He insists he's not a paid spokesperson, but he swears by the app Centr. It's Chris Hemsworth's fitness app.“It wasn't like these like gargantuan bulky bodybuilders,” added Hall. “It was real people.”Hall weighed 330 pounds at his heaviest. Now, he weighs 165. He believes more time at home helped make that transformation a reality. Hall wants everyone to know losing weight can be done, just start slow.“It's not nearly as complicated as you think it is,” added Hall. He says it’s a lot of hard work. This story was originally published by Jeff Rusack at WKBW. 1414

ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) -- As firefighters work towards 100% containment in the Valley Fire, business owners are cleaning up the damage left behind by the flames. Alpine Dog Ranch is a vacation ranch for dogs to say while their owners are away. When the Valley Fire started, the ranch's owner, Thomas MacKinnon, was taking care of nine dogs, including his own. He quickly rushed to get them all into a van and tried to get out, but MacKinnon says they were trapped by flames. He and several neighbors took refuge in an open field until the flames passed. Firefighters and a 747 Supertanker saved all of the structures. No one was hurt. The fire did burn a lot of the greenery on the ranch and now MacKinnon is cleaning up; repairing fencing, the sprinkler system and covering burned patches with woodchips. MacKinnon says the fire was an added challenge on top of a difficult year. Like many businesses, the Alpine Dog Ranch has been struggling. With people not going on vacation and needing a place to leave their dogs, business has been slow. MacKinnon's friends set up a Go Fund Me page to help with the ranch's repairs. A woman accused of mailing poison to President Donald Trump sent six similar letters to prison officials in Texas, according to court documents obtained by Scripps station WKBW in Buffalo, New York.Pascale Ferrier was arrested Sunday on the Peace Bridge — the bridge over Lake Erie that connects the U.S. and Canada at Buffalo, New York. Pascale, who was reportedly in possession of a gun and a knife, was charged with threatening the President of the United States.Ferrier's arrest came a day after the FBI announced it was investigating a suspicious letter addressed to Trump that contained ricin, a poison found naturally in castor seeds.According to an arrest warrant obtained Tuesday, Ferrier's referred to Trump in her letter as "The Ugly Tyrant Clown," and called for him to resign."You ruin USA and lead them to disaster. I have US cousins, then I don't want the next 4 years with you as president. Give up and remove your application for this election," she allegedly wrote.Ferrier's letter also referred to a "special gift" included in the envelope."This gift is in this letter," she allegedly wrote. " If it doesn't work, I'll find better recipe for another poison, or I might use my gun when I'll be able to come. Enjoy! FREE REBEL SPIRIT."According to an affidavit, the letters found in Texas also included a powdery substance, references to trying "another recipe" and also included the signature "FREE REBEL SPIRIT." Fingerprints taken from the letters match Ferrier's prints on file, according to court paperwork. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are also investigating the incident. Monday, CTV News in Canada reported that they conducted an operation in St-Hubert, which is south of Montreal, Quebec.Ferrier is due in Federal Court in downtown Buffalo on Tuesday afternoon. 1799

Across the U.S., employees at a large media company are working to put books in the hands of children living in poverty. That company — E.W. Scripps — is inviting the public to help. The Scripps Howard Foundation’s annual “If you give a child a book …” literacy campaign has started and will run through the end of August. The literacy campaign has distributed more than 100,000 new books to children across the country since 2017.Now in its third year, the campaign is a partnership of the Foundation, employees of The E.W. Scripps Company and donors who provide matching gifts to advance childhood literacy by increasing access to books. ?Every dollar raised during the “If you give a child a book … ” campaign is used for the purchase of books for children who need them most. Books are purchased at cost through a partnership with Scholastic Book Fairs, further maximizing the purchasing power of every donated dollar.Following the campaign, Scripps news organizations choose a local nonprofit group that works with children and families to receive the books. In addition, the TV stations air stories about the importance of literacy and how to get involved, further amplifying the impact of the campaign.“There is an intrinsic link between the ability to read and a child’s ability to succeed in life,” said Liz Carter, president and chief executive officer of the Scripps Howard Foundation. “By helping children learn to read, we can assure they can have the tools and information they need to reach their potential.”Books presented to program partners on National Reading Day on January 23, 2019.Visit http://ifyougiveabook.com for more information on how to give to this the campaign. 1703
