Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says he’s concerned about the accuracy of COVID-19 test results.In a news conference Monday, he said there have been several cases where people received positive results, even though they had never been tested in the first place.“For that to come back positive, when there was no specimen submitted, is problematic. So I’ve heard it enough to be concerned about it," said DeSantis.People have said they submitted their contact information at a COVID-19 testing site, but after seeing how long the line was, they decided not to wait an hour or more to get the test. Nevertheless, a few days later, they got an email or a phone call telling them that they tested positive.Representatives at the Centurylink Sports Complex testing site say false positives aren’t possible there, because of how they have it set up.The Florida Department of Health says, at Centurylink, you submit your contact information right before you get tested. So if somebody were to get out of line, they wouldn’t have had the chance to hand over their phone number or email.But not all testing sites are the same.We reached out to Lee Health, which operates several testing sites of its own. Those sites operate by appointment only, and they do take contact info beforehand, but Lee Health says it has not yet had any issues with mixed up results, and it takes several steps to make sure the results get to the right person.The health system says its sites verify the patient’s identity when they arrive. Then, the person who conducts the test signs and dates each specimen. Four people in attendance at Republican National Convention events in Charlotte this week have tested positive for COVID-19, according to officials in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.In its daily release of COVID-19 data, the county said that two attendees and two people support staff members tested positive for the virus. The four people were "immediately issued isolation instructions," and those who had contact with those infected were also told to isolate.About 800 people in town for the RNC were tested for COVID-19, the country reported.While most of the convention was held virtually this year, Charlotte did host a few RNC events in the city this week. The roll call vote was centered in Charlotte, with some delegates submitting their votes virtually. Both President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence gave speeches Monday in front of about 300 delegates at the Charlotte Convention Center.North Carolina has mandated that masks be worn in indoor public spaces, and RNC leaders agreed to enforce the mandate at the convention. However, county health officials reported to the Charlotte Observer that some in attendance were not wearing masks.President Donald Trump delivered his convention speech in front of about 1,000 supporters on the White House lawn on Thursday. Most of those in attendance were not wearing a mask. It’s dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers, the bedrock of the U.S. economy and the country's prosperity.“It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country,” according to the U.S. Department of Labor.The first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City on Sept. 5, 1882, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union.As for the founder of Labor Day, there is still some doubt about who first proposed the holiday for workers.Some records show Peter J. McGuire, a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, was the first to suggest the holiday. Meanwhile, others believe that machinist Matthew Maguire proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.Regardless, Labor Day celebrations gained popularity and communities across the U.S. began making it a state holiday. First, Oregon passed it into law, followed by states like Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday and in June of that year, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday of each year a national holiday.Since then, Labor Day celebrations have evolved.
