SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister announced his office is accepting penalty cancellation requests for homeowners and small business owners who were impacted by COVID-19 and missed the Dec. 10 property tax deadline.Property taxes unpaid after Dec. 10 incurred a 10% penalty. To qualify for penalty cancellation, the property must either be residential and occupied by the homeowner or owned and operated by a taxpayer that qualifies as a small business."COVID-19 has affected many in San Diego -- especially our small businesses, so we want to do what we can to help those who did not have the funds to pay their taxes on time," McAllister said. "We want to be as lenient as we can and show compassion for those who need it."To complete a penalty cancellation request, a taxpayer must:-- complete the request form, print it and sign it-- include copies of printed evidence proving how the taxpayer was impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and unable to pay the property taxes by the delinquent date-- include a check for the base amount of the property taxes owed. The TTC does not accept request forms when there is no payment attached-- mail the request form, documentation, and check to SDTTC -- ATTN: COVID-19 REVIEW, 1600 Pacific Highway, Room 162, San Diego California, 92101. Alternatively, drop off a request in the dropboxes found outside our branch office locationsRequests, along with the payment, must be submitted no later than May 6, 2021. All penalty cancellation requests will be reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis.Since April, the Treasurer-Tax Collector's Office has received 4,690 COVID-19 penalty cancellation requests and has approved 58% of them, accordoing to McAllister. Most denials are due to missing printed evidence or a missing payment."Property taxes are essential to the county, cities, and school districts," McAllister said. "They fund many vital services, including COVID- 19 response and the salaries of first responders."More information can be found at https://www.sdttc.com/content/ttc/en/tax-collection/secured-property-taxes/covid-19-penalty-cancellations.html?. 2160

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Poll watchers will be permitted to observe election activities at polling stations countywide on Nov. 3, though COVID-19 related restrictions will limit the number of people allowed inside polling places.Social distancing requirements mean only about one to two observers might be rotated in and out of the polling places at any given time this year, Assistant Registrar of Voters Cynthia Paes said Thursday. The number of polling places in San Diego County has been reduced from 1,548 in March to 235 larger polling places that will be open for four days and are each expected to be staffed by about 15 county employees, Paes said. The role of poll watchers has garnered increased attention as part of the national discussion on voter fraud and voter intimidation sparked most recently by President Donald Trump's call at Tuesday's presidential debate for his supporters to monitor polling places on Election Day.Trump, who has frequently raised the specter of voter fraud and publicly expressed doubts over the security of mail-in voting, urged supporters Tuesday to "go into the polls and watch very carefully because that's what has to happen."Tony Krvaric, chair of the San Diego County Republican Party, said recruiting poll watchers is a typical practice, intended to ensure votes are cast and note any irregularities in the voting process."We always recruit for poll watchers and have done so for as long as I can remember," Krvaric told City News Service."Poll watchers help make sure Republicans who haven't voted are contacted and reminded to do so and keep an eye out for any irregularities. This is nothing new. Democrats presumably do the same."Krvaric said any such instances of irregularities are reported to local officials or the Registrar of Voters."Any voter irregularities could dilute legitimate votes cast," he said. Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, chair of the San Diego County Democratic Party, said he was confident in the San Diego County Registrar of Voters' ability to ensure a fair election process, saying there are "a number of processes (conducted) to verify a vote."Regarding Trump's allegations of voter fraud related to mail-in voting, Rodriguez-Kennedy called Trump's assertions "a falsehood," based largely in myth.Rodriguez-Kennedy told City News Service "mail ballot voting is safe and secure" and said its presence this election will increase overall voter turnout, something he said represented "a problem for this president."Of Trump's statements at the debate, he said his "intent is to sow discontent because he fears he is losing." 2592

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Santa Ana winds and low humidity levels will keep the risk of wildfire high across the San Diego area into Tuesday, as they did for much of last week.To alert the public to the combustion hazards posed by the gusty and arid conditions, the National Weather Service issued a red flag wildfire warning for local mountain and western-valleys communities, effective through 10 p.m. Tuesday. A high-wind warning also will be in effect from 6 this evening through noon Tuesday in those same areas.Outdoor burning, mechanized brush clearing and other potentially spark-creating activities should be avoided over the period, as any fires that develop will spread rapidly, according to the NWS.As of late this afternoon, San Diego Gas & Electric had instituted public-safety power shutoffs in parts of Descanso, Jamul, Potrero, Ramona, Santa Ysabel and Valley Center in a bid to avoid any blazes ignited by transmission equipment. A total of 2,807 addresses were affected, and the utility advised another 47,676 of its customers across the East County that their power might be shut off as a precaution as well.Conditions are expected to warm up Tuesday and Wednesday, after which temperatures will drop slightly on Thursday and Friday, forecasters said. 1275
