When the teen handed his money to Ramirez, who was sitting in the backseat, Benjamin sped away, she alleged.Eastman said the victim hung onto the open rear car window in an attempt to get the drugs or his money back. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities warned the public Friday to beware of crooks who have telephoned Poway-area residents in recent weeks and tried to swindle them out of money by falsely claiming that the victims were in arrears due to outstanding arrest warrants or other obligations to local government coffers."These scammers and impersonators sometimes provide the victims with genuine Sheriff's Department phone numbers, and in the past they have actually used the names of real department employees," sheriff's Lt. Christopher Collier said. "They may sometimes even want to arrange a meeting in the parking lot of a government building or station in an effort to appear legitimate."No employees of the regional law enforcement agency -- or of any other county body -- contact members of the public by telephone to discuss such matters, Collier noted."Nor would any employees ever try to arrange a meeting to allow (a) payment to be made," the lieutenant said. "If you receive a call from a person or persons claiming to be a Sheriff's Department employee, and that person is trying to solicit a payment of some sort, please hang up the phone immediately."Victims of such illicit solicitations are also advised to report the offenses to the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov, or to local law enforcement if the contact results in an actual loss of money or personal information. 1392

Gavin Newsom announced Monday the state will send .7 million to support San Diego's proposed purchase of two hotels to provide more than 330 rental housing units for San Diegans experiencing homelessness.The funds -- part of the state's Project Homekey -- will go toward the purchase of the Residence Inn Hotel Circle and Residence Inn Kearny Mesa, to be considered by the San Diego City Council in October.The purchase of the two properties would create 332 permanent supportive housing units, with 72 of the units having two bedrooms, enough to provide housing for more than 400 individuals. According to a city statement, the units were determined to require minimal work before people could move in. The Hotel Circle property was built in 2003, while the Kearny Mesa property was built in 1990 and underwent a renovation in 2013."San Diego has proven we can put state dollars to action on programs and services that reduce homelessness," said Mayor Kevin Faulconer. Jonathan Currier, with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in San Diego's North County, was reported overboard at 9:40 a.m. Thursday while the USS Essex was conducting routine operations in the Sulu Sea.Currier was declared dead on Aug. 17, 13th MEU Capt. Diann Rosenfield said. "Our hearts go out to the Currier family," said Col. Chandler Nelms, commanding officer, 13th MEU. "Cpl.
