CAMP PENDLETON, Calif., (KGTV)-- Thousands of US Marines stormed a makeshift town today as part of the largest amphibious exercise in Camp Pendleton's history. With their guns drawn and light on their feet, the Marines at Camp Pendleton have one objective: secure the Red Beach Combat Town. The town is a collection of makeshift structures off Las Pulgas Road just west of Interstate 5.The scenario was this: The soldiers are fighting the enemy from a near-pier threat. The Marines got battle-ready at sea, aboard the USS Somerset and USS Macon Island, thanks to their special partnership with the US Navy. "We spend a lot of time on ship, a lot of time coordinating with the sailors themselves inside the welded deck inside the ship," Amphibious Assault [AAV] Section Leader, Sgt. Kenneth Larkin said. "Being able to rely on each other for the safety of our vehicles and our members, it's phenomenal."From ship to shore, the men and women arrive on their AAV. They creep onto shore at seven mph, then book it on land. The crew drops off the infantry, ant the combat simulation begins. This scenario kicks off this year's Steel Knight Exercise. With 13,000 Marines and sailors participating, it is the largest iteration of the Steel Knight Exercise at Camp Pendleton."The Marine Corps prides itself on being amphibious, so this is one of those exercises where the division gets involved. The entire division of Camp Pendleton," Infantry Platoon Sgt. Ethan Rhoades said. "It basically hones our skills to actually go from ship to shore and to seize an objective likely would in a real-time conflict."For two weeks straight, the men and women will repeat the aerial and amphibious exercises. Tough training in the elements will prepare them for real-life scenarios. (KGTV) - A former DACA recipient was arrested Monday on his second attempt to re-enter the U.S. from Mexico.El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents received information from Remote Video Surveillance Systems operators that a man had crossed the border fence approximately 3 miles east of Calexico.RVSS monitors showed the man running away from agents as they tried to arrest him, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said.After a brief chase, agents caught 23-year-old Mexican citizen Juan Manual Montes-Bojorquez.CBP said Montes had previously been deported in February.“Our agents witnessed and arrested Mr. Bojorquez making an illegal entry into the United States for the second time this year,” said Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David S. Kim. “Border Patrol Agents will always stop, detain, and arrest anyone making an illegal entry into the country irrespective of their immigration or citizenship status.” Montes was booked into the Imperial County Jail on pending charges of re-entry after removal.  1047

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The pandemic ignited a global fight against a fast-moving and deadly virus. “In the beginning, a lot of manufacturers shifted gears and started doing more COVID manufacturing," said Dr. Melissa Miller, a clinical lab director.Manufacturers began ramping up testing production and diverting supplies to combat the virus. But in the months ahead, laboratories started facing another threat due to a strained supply chain. Not only were labs facing shortages of supplies needed for COVID-19, but several other common illnesses. “Probably the biggest one was for sexually transmitted diseases, chlamydia, gonorrhea being the most common ones we diagnose in the labs," said Dr. Miller. The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) partnered with the Association of Supply Chain Management to track shortages across the country. ASM leaders say the data collection tool provides a near real-time visualization into the capacity, utilization, and resources necessary to meet consumer and patient demand for testing.“It was a bit of a surprise of how overwhelming it was throughout the country and that there weren’t just hot spots; it really indicated that this was a major national issue," said Dr. Miller. “The first week of the survey, almost 90% of the laboratories that responded reported a shortage of tests for STI’s.”Dr. Miller has a leadership role within ASM and has also been experiencing shortages in the lab firsthand."It’s a guessing game. Many times we don’t know when the next shipment is coming for some of the items we’re short on," said Dr. Miller. Since September, 134 CLIA-certified labs have responded to the survey, which is updated every week. Dr. Miller says the figure for STI testing supplies has improved but is still too high around 50%. And she says 47% of labs have a shortage of non-COVID-19 testing supplies to detect routine bacteria, including the bacteria that cause strep throat, pneumonia, bronchitis, and urinary tract infections."Since June, I have been worried about this exact moment," said Dr. Miller. “You have the COVID surge, the upcoming holidays, and the winter season, and you have respiratory season."The survey also showed 74% of labs have a shortage of commercial testing kits for COVID-19.She says the hope is to include more labs in the weekly survey to get a clearer picture of the supply chain issues.“Data is power; we need the data that this is a problem. And getting some federal action on this, I think, is critical," said Dr. Miller. And she says the longer labs wait for critical supplies, the more Americans in need of critical testing could be turned away. 2641

(KGTV) - More than two and a half years after Team 10 first reported about a North County property management company accused of stealing money from clients, the victims are finally getting their money back.Kelley Zaun owned Carousel Properties, a Carlsbad property management company. Victims first told Team 10 in 2016, they hired her to pay fees associated with their rentals. They said she did not pay those fees. She was accused of taking roughly 0,000 from victims, according to investigators.In 2018, Zaun faced 29 felonies for embezzlement, according to Deputy District Attorney Anna Winn. Zaun entered into a plea deal and agreed to a year in custody. With the help of the DA’s office, Zaun’s former clients were able to get their money back through the Department of Real Estate’s Consumer Recovery Account. RELATED: Team 10: Police investigating Carlsbad companyStephen Lerner, the Assistant Commissioner for Legal Affairs for the department, said so far, 23 victims have been reimbursed through the account. Other victims’ payments are still processing. They have been able to reimburse 2,084.68 thus far.The Consumer Recover Account is an option for fraud victims when trying to recoup money from the person who took it from them. In order to utilize the fund, Lerner said there must be a criminal or civil court order for the defendant to pay back money he or she took. If victims cannot get refunded from the person who stole it, they can apply through the Department of Real Estate (DRE).Winn said she volunteered to be the victims’ liaison with the DRE, as the process for reimbursement is lengthy and many of the victims were elderly. One of Zaun’s victims told Team 10 he is “extremely grateful” for the DA’s office work on this case.
