SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Singer Jimmy Buffet's successful chain of properties is making its first appearance on the West Coast in the coming months. Paradise Point Resort & Spa on Vacation Isle Park in Mission Bay is rebranding into a Margaritaville Island Beach Resort, with an anticipated opening of 2020-21.The existing property will be renovated and converted for an estimated million. It will feature 462 casita-style single-story guest rooms, waterfront views with a mile of beachfront, Margaritaville food and beverage concepts, new recreational activities and family-friendly amenities.Margaritaville is a global lifestyle brand inspired by the lyrics and lifestyle of singer, songwriter and best-selling author Jimmy Buffett, whose songs evoke a passion for tropical escape and relaxation.Davidson Hotels & Resorts will operate the property as Paradise Point Resort & Spa until the hotel is reflagged, and will continue to manage the property following the completion of the renovation and rebranding.Paradise Point's general manager, Michael Stephens tells 10News, "Some of the first things were investing in is restaurants." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's top Democratic candidates for mayor squared off on the debate stage Friday. The big theme of the night was housing and homelessness, and Assemblymember Todd Gloria, Councilmember Barbara Bry, and community activist Tasha Williamson came prepared with answers."I will move homeless services to the offices of the mayor, currently it's outsourced to the housing administration, it sends a message its not a priority for this mayor or this City Hall," Gloria said.Gloria put the onus on himself if elected to solve homelessness, while Bry had a more collaborative approach, wanting to pressure the county for more help."I believe it is much more effective to send social workers out with iPads to talk to homeless individuals where they are, to send out social workers, not police officers," Bry said.But the biggest applause lines of the night came from political outsider Williamson, who pushed her platform for police oversight."We have been criminalized all our lives and the time is up, the time is now, we are going to stop it, we are going to be a sweeping sea of change when we talk about police accountability, rogue officers do not belong here, they will have too look for another job somewhere else," Williamson said.But it was the scooter issue that brought out the biggest punches."A few days ago I talked to [the San Diegan] who's wife is in critical condition at UCSD with skull fractures and severe bleeding after falling off a scooter, I was in tears after talking with him," Bry started. Amid the rollout of coronavirus shots, their focus is now to prevent people from buying vaccines advertised as the real thing.Dr. Timothy Mackey, an associate professor of Anesthesiology and Global Public Health at UC San Diego, said scammers are taking advantage of consumers seeking COVID-19 vaccines because there's a need, but not enough supply."We first saw herbal and nutritional supplements because people were trying to avoid the disease, then a bunch of testing kits we saw when people didn't have access to testing kits,” said Mackey.And now, he said people browsing the web will see advertisements promoting fake COVID-19 vaccines."You cannot get any vaccine on the internet. If you're seeing a post that says you can buy it right away, it's not the real vaccine,” said Mackey.He said falling into a trap could cause serious harm to yourself and others."Middle ground you get sterilized water, and it doesn't work. Then, you go out and risk transmission to others,” Mackey said.Secondly, he said you'd get ripped off and risk having your credit card information and identity stolen. And third, "You get a product that's spoiled or a needle not sterile, and you get another disease or something that's toxic for your body."Mackey said the bottom line is the vaccine will not be available online anytime soon."The vaccine will only be available in registered healthcare facilities and only a few that are specifically validated to distribute the vaccine.
