SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students at the University of California San Diego are still reeling from Wednesday's storm that flooded more than a dozen apartments.Students told 10News they were shocked when water poured in around 11 p.m. during the storm. One young man, who didn't want to be identified, said the water seeped in under the door and poured in through a floor-length window in their bedroom."So every angle yeah, it instantly started soaking everything under my bed," he said, adding the water was freezing cold.RELATED: Rain floods buildings on the campus of UC San DiegoHe took videos documenting the two inches of water that seeped in."If I wasn't here, then every bit of electronics we had out here would've been completely ruined, hundreds of dollars worth of stuff," the man told 10News.Another student shared her experience, saying she was walking back to her dorm after studying and found "about a 4-foot deep puddle leading up to my door." She said once she opened the door mud and water flowed in.She said the timing was terrible."I have a midterm Monday, I'm actually getting tutoring right after this, it's a bit crazy."Students scrambled, trying to get help from the university and relocate. One student told 10News she never got help from the university, despite calling multiple times Wednesday night and getting a case number.Thursday morning cleaning companies went to work, installing fans in the rooms and peeling off baseboards.Some students said the university is doing a great job."Is there something we can brainstorm to fix this so it doesn't happen in the future, because I can only imagine what's going to happen next week when it rains harder and I'd hate to come back from break and see, 'oh everything's damaged." a student said.The university said four students were relocated to temporary housing. A University official said the drains in the area were examined before the storm and the torrential downpour was the cause of the flooding. 1981

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some 4,500 sailors and marines reunited with their families at Naval Base Coronado Friday. Eight months ago, the Amphibious Assault Ship USS Essex and two support ships, the Anchorage and Rushmore, set sail for the Western Pacific and Middle East.The deployment was of historic significance as the military's newest, multi-use fighter jet, the F-35B flew its first combat missions in support of U.S. troops. The Navy reported the jet supported troops in Iraq, Syria and Afghanastan but the exact nature of that support not being divulged at this point. However, the Essex commander confirmed armaments were used by the aircraft.Friday, the primary focus was hugs and kisses. The "official first kisses" involved two young sailors greeting their wives with long embraces. Fathers also met their babies in person for the first time. One dad told 10News it was impossible to put into words how good it felt to hold his new son. The infant, who seemed at ease in his father's arms, then gave a big smile. Sailor Rhett Orth also held his baby girl for first time. His sentiment shared by many, of how hard it is to be away from home but how amazing it feels to be back. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld San Diego's next thrill ride has been given the all clear by the state.The California Coastal Commission Wednesday approved the park's request for a dive coaster called Mako, set to open at the park next year. The roller coaster is already being billed as the "tallest, fastest, and longest dive coaster in California," and the only floorless dive coaster in the state.The San Diego City Council gave the 153-foot ride unanimous approval last April, allowing SeaWorld to exceed the city's 30-foot height limitation in coastal zones.RELATED: SeaWorld San Diego brings back its popular annual SoCal PassSeaWorld says construction on Mako should begin in the next few months.The ride, announced in January, will be constructed by Switzerland-based Bollinger & Mabillard. Floorless cars will hold 18 riders at a time in three six-person rows. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Small Business Administration Administrator Jovita Carranza visited San Diego to check on America's investment in small businesses."Being here in San Diego and very vibrant market and thousands and thousands of small businesses benefited from the Paycheck Protection Program," Carranza said.One of those businesses is VetPowered and their non-profit Workshops for Warriors, which trains veterans in manufacturing. The company launched in 2008.More than 750 veterans have graduated and 95% of them have been placed in permanent jobs. "The SBA funding we received was a lifeline had we not received that funding we would have had to shut down operations and all the students that were here most of them would become homeless so thanks to these loans not only were we able to continue operations we’ve had two COVID graduations we’ve been able to put almost 100 graduates that I’ve been trained and certified in advanced manufacturing skills into the workforce and I am so thankful for their support," Hernán Luis y Prado, Founder and CEO of VetPowered and Workshops for Warriors.Carranza said negotiations for another round of PPP has been in negotiations for more than two months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego workers are now checking the more than 250,000 water meters across the city to make sure families are billed accurately.The city announced earlier this month that it overcharged hundreds of families in four neighborhoods - Rancho Bernardo, Mira Mesa, Rancho Penasqutios and Carmel Valley. There's now a full city audit of the water billing department, and the department itself is checking the meters independently.RELATED: San Diego to expand audit of water billing overchargesSan Diegans have complained to 10News for months about spiking water bills, with little to no help or explanation from the city. Some have even questioned whether their meter is read - given that it's often covered in dirt. Terri Mitchell, who lives near Oak Park, said she raised concerns to one meter reader recently over his workload."He says i'm going to have to dig here, I've got like 400 more meters," she said.RELATED: Dozens of San Diegans come forward with high water billsThe city invited 10News to join one of its meter readers as he checked meters in Rancho Bernardo on Friday. The city wanted to show that there is a system in place to read the meters, since people were questioning the validity of their water bills and whether their meters are even read. "A lot of customers sometimes feel that since they can't see the meter, that we're not reading it," said Steven Broyles, who has read water meters for the city for 18 years.Armed with a pick and a handheld computer, Broyles opened a handful of meter caps along Madrigal Road in Rancho Bernardo, as part of his day to read 500 meters.RELATED: City of San Diego finds 343 water customers were overchargedSome weren't easy to see. Broyles used the pick to scrape dirt off of one meter, and also looked closely at another that had scratches over where the numbers are visible.
