SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Wednesday that more than 2,000 businesses in the city have received grants from San Diego's COVID-19 Small Business Relief Fund, impacting nearly 10,000 full-time jobs with half of the recipients operating in underserved communities."Across the nation, small businesses are closing in alarming numbers because of the pandemic. We're doing everything we can to stop the hemorrhaging of small businesses in San Diego," Faulconer said. "We've been able to help 2,000 businesses survive for another day, but we know the need is great so I encourage San Diegans to do what they can to support their favorite local businesses during these trying times."Faulconer created the fund in March to offer support to local employers so they could sustain operations, retain employees and address unforeseen reductions in consumer demand and production. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities warned the public Friday to beware of crooks who have telephoned Poway-area residents in recent weeks and tried to swindle them out of money by falsely claiming that the victims were in arrears due to outstanding arrest warrants or other obligations to local government coffers."These scammers and impersonators sometimes provide the victims with genuine Sheriff's Department phone numbers, and in the past they have actually used the names of real department employees," sheriff's Lt. Christopher Collier said. "They may sometimes even want to arrange a meeting in the parking lot of a government building or station in an effort to appear legitimate."No employees of the regional law enforcement agency -- or of any other county body -- contact members of the public by telephone to discuss such matters, Collier noted."Nor would any employees ever try to arrange a meeting to allow (a) payment to be made," the lieutenant said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Circulate San Diego released a report today detailing how cities in southern San Diego County can make progress toward eliminating traffic deaths.The report outlined ways in which Imperial Beach, National City, Chula Vista and Coronado can prevent fatal traffic accidents by making improvements to the cities' most dangerous intersections and roadways.Circulate San Diego suggested the cities should take steps to calm traffic flows like restriping roadways to narrow them and reduce speeds. Circulate also recommended that the highlighted cities should asses driving behaviors that lead to serious injury and fatal car accidents and work with local law enforcement officers to target those behaviors through education and traffic law enforcement."Every city has room for improvement to make streets safe and we look forward to working with each South County city to save lives,'' said Maya Rosas, co-author of the study and the organization's director of policy.The report is part of the organization's participation in the Vision Zero campaign, which aims to eliminate fatal traffic accidents altogether. Circulate San Diego and the city of San Diego have already set a goal of eliminating traffic deaths in the city by 2025.The organization made similar recommendations to the city of San Diego last year and the city subsequently repaired its 15 most dangerous intersections. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A shooting near Willie Henderson Sports Complex left a man wounded Friday.The 40-year-old victim was sitting in his vehicle in the 900 block of South 45th Street in Mountain View shortly before noon when a "large" man approached and shot him several times in the upper body, then ran off, according to San Diego police.Medics took the victim to a hospital for treatment of non-life- threatening wounds, Officer Tony Martinez said.It was unclear if the two men knew each other, and the motive for the shooting was unknown. 547

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Countywide sales of previously owned single-family homes and attached properties like condominiums increased from June to July while median sale prices ticked down, according to data released Wednesday by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors.Single-family home sales rose 2.4%, from 1,980 in June to 2,028 in July, while attached property sales ticked up 5.1%, from 975 in June to 1,025 last month. Both increases are a modest recovery for the housing market after housing sales tumbled by double digits from May to June.Median sales prices for both property types dipped slightly in July after steady gains each month of the year, save for attached property prices from March to April.
