(KGTV) - The City of El Cajon is working to revitalize its main street, with the Magnolia Theater at the centerpiece of the effort.The theater used to be the El Cajon Performing Arts Center. In 2009, during the latest recession, the city shut it down to save money.Over the last few years, the city spent more than million to renovate the building and turn it into "The Magnolia."The building got new air conditioning and heating, new carpet, new seating and more modern amenities."We've rebranded it," says City Manager Graham Mitchell. "We have a new name, a new management company and a new way of doing things. There's a new philosophy of how we operate the facility."RELATED: East County Performing Arts Center to Re-Open as "The Magnolia"As part of the renovation, city leaders entered into an agreement with Live Nation to handle booking for the newly refurbished venue. Live Nation will provide up to 70 acts per year. The city will pay them a flat fee and then keep 100 percent of the proceeds from the shows.The venue reopened in October of 2019, and Mitchell says he's already seeing the impact it's having on the downtown area."My office is right across the plaza from the Magnolia, and pre-show, watching people spill into El Cajon, people that have not ever been here or haven't been here for a while, you can see the enthusiasm that this venue is building," he says.Business owners in the area agree.RELATED: Construction problems delay renovation of East County concert venueLupe Marrujo's family owns two restaurants on Main Street, the Downtown Cafe and Por Favor. She says business picks up on the nights when The Magnolia has a show."Before the show and after the show," she says. "They come to either the bar or the restaurant."Mitchell says the city expects an extra 100,000 people to visit downtown each year because of the events. They hope those people will come back, even when there isn't a show."There's a lot of revival, a lot of renewal, and this project exemplifies the things that are happening in the city," says Mitchell. Does undocumented immigration lead to more violent crimes? A study looking at the increase of illegal immigrants over 24 years says no.There's a stigma linking violent crime with illegal immigrants and part of that has to do with the spotlight on MS-13 gang arrests across the country and specifically in Lake Worth. But, a state-by-state study says an increase in undocumented immigration actually makes communities safer.The study was conducted by sociologists Michael Light of the University of Wisconsin at Madison and Ty Miller of Purdue University.The FBI's Uniform Crime Report statistics show Florida's violent crime rate over time and statistics from the Pew Research Center show the increase in undocumented immigrants.The study looked at those statistics from 1990 to 2014. In those 25 years, Florida's undocumented immigration was at its lowest in 1990 and its violent crime rate for those years was at its highest. Fast forward to 2007, the undocumented immigration population peaked in the state, and the violent crime rate had dropped by 40 percent and continued to decrease. The study echoes what many immigration advocates argue. "We don’t see a large criminal underground in Lake Worth. Gamwell said in some cases they don't even report when they are victims of crimes. "We've seen a history of that, where people are targeted because they have cash on them on payday," said Gamwell. Gamwell said the focus for the 600 plus families they serve in Lake Worth is making ends meet and providing for their children."The big issues are:  How do I educate my children? how to do I get access to a computer? DULZURA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three fires burned in rural East County Wednesday afternoon as Cal Fire worked to extinguish the flames. According to Cal Fire, all three of the fires sparked in the community of Dulzura along Highway 94 between Otay Lakes Road and Freezer Road. Video of the blaze shows traffic in the area backed up for several miles after crews closed Highway 94 between Otay Lakes Road and Barrett Lake Road. Around 5:30 p.m., Cal Fire said crews were able to stop the forward rate of spread of all three fires. In total, all three fires burned slightly less than 32 acres. Sky10 was live over the fire. DoorDash customers can now order groceries through its app.The company announced that they have partnered up with several grocery stores in select cities across the country to limit people's trip to stores due to COVID-19.Customers will be able to purchase from stores like Smart & Final, Meijer, and Fresh Thyme.In the coming weeks, the company will partner up with Hy-Vee and Gristedes/D'agostino."DoorDash provides another convenient way for customers to get the value, selection, and quality that Smart & Final offers, especially at a time when some are looking to limit trips outside their homes," said Navin Cotton, Director of Digital Commerce, Smart & Final in the press release. (KGTV) -- One of the El Cajon Police Department’s K9s, K9 Jester, is being assigned a new partner after his current partner resigned from the department.After working with Jester for the last two and a half years, Officer Jordan Walker voluntarily resigned to work for another agency, according to the department. Walker said he offered to pay for Jester, who was brought in through a Ben Roethlisberger?Foundation grant. K9s cost anywhere from ,000 to ,000 to bring in and train, according to the foundation.Because Jester is still in excellent health, he was assigned to work with a new partner, Officer Randall Gray. Gray and Jester have already started the bonding process and training together, the department said Thursday.
