The county did not disclose the age or gender of the four new cases confirmed this week, but said all of the patients visited the fair's animal exhibits and petting zoos.People can avoid contracting the bacteria by thoroughly washing their hands after making contact with animals at places like farms, petting zoos and fair exhibits. Young children, older adults and people with weak immune systems are at particular risk, according to health officials.The HHSA and the California Department of Food and Agriculture collected environmental samples at the fair after the first cases were reported to confirm the bacteria's origin. However, results of the collected samples were not available prior to the fair's closure and have yet to be disclosed.County health officials repeatedly cautioned that more confirmed cases were likely despite the fair's closing due to local doctors intentionally looking for symptoms of the bacteria and its multi-day incubation period. As such, the county has not indicated that the cases are part of a larger, countywide outbreak linked to common causes like contaminated produce.While most people who contract the E. coli bacteria do not develop severe complications, roughly 5 to 10% of those who do can develop a potentially life-threatening kidney infection. Symptoms do not appear for three to four days after contraction and can include severe abdominal cramps, watery or bloody diarrhea and vomiting.Residents should promptly contact their doctor if they believe they have contracted E. coli, according to the county. 2455

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors Tuesday unanimously signed off on a program that will provide quick access to help for first responders dealing with a mental health crisis. The Captain Ryan J. Mitchell First Responder Behavioral Health Program will offer confidential mental and behavioral health support by connecting first responders with a clinical professional via a dedicated phone line, website or smartphone app. The program will be open to first responders in any jurisdiction or branch of public safety. Supervisor Nathan Fletcher proposed the program after speaking with firefighters and law enforcement officials around the county during a listening tour earlier this year. The program is named after Cal Fire Capt. Ryan Mitchell, who took his own life in 2017. Mitchell's father thanked the board for approving the program. William Mitchell, who is a fire department chaplain, said sharing his son's legacy ``brings healing to our broken hearts.'' Fletcher said the board ``took an important step in furthering its commitment to behavioral health services'' with their support of the program. ``First responders across San Diego County in the midst of a mental health crisis will be able to quickly access clinician assistance confidentially without the barriers that today are preventing them from getting the help they need,'' he said. Humane Society officials recently determined that some residents paid fees that were higher than the amounts the city of San Diego adopted on July 1, 2018, for local animal services. The organization plans to contact and offer refunds to residents affected by the overcharging that occurred between July 1 last year and Nov. 19 of this year. The organization also offered discounted services to residents via promotions intended to increase animal adoptions and make it easier to adopt a pet. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The remaining sailors from the San Diego-based USS Theodore Roosevelt who stayed ashore in Guam following a COVID-19 outbreak aboard the carrier will fly back to the United States starting Friday, according to the Navy.The carrier resumed its scheduled deployment in the Indo-Pacific last Thursday, though a few hundred sailors remained in Guam to continue receiving medical care. The Navy says those service members will take military flights to the U.S., where they will be required to complete a two-week "restriction-of- movement sequester" either at home or at facilities on base at their home station.The ship originally departed San Diego on Jan. 17 for a deployment, but was diverted to Guam on March 27 when the COVID-19 outbreak took hold, ultimately infecting more than 1,100 sailors, and killing one, Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Charles Thacker, 41.The ship's commanding officer, Capt. Brett Crozier, made a publicized plea for assistance from Navy leadership in a letter that was leaked to the press, leading to his removal from command of the ship.While many have called for his reinstatement, the Navy has stated that its investigation into the circumstances behind the letter's leak is ongoing. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Southwestern College President and Superintendent Kindred Murillo will retire at the end of this academic year after serving 24 years in the California Community College System, the college confirmed Wednesday.Beginning as an adjunct faculty member at Desert Community College District, Murillo has served in various roles. She spent 11 years as a chief business official and served her last nine years in the system as a college president, first at Lake Tahoe Community College District, and then at Southwestern College for more than four years."It is the commitment faculty, classified professionals and administrators have had to the success and achievement of our students that has made my career so rewarding," Murillo said. "Southwestern College has been the most remarkable community college I have had the privilege of serving during my entire academic career. We have worked together to establish a path of transformation for our students and our community."Murillo guided the college's accreditation status from warning to reaffirmation within her first year. According to a college statement, she also tackled a backlog of personnel investigations and complaints, increasing accountability at the district.Early in her tenure, she formed an Advisory Task Force on Inclusion & Race Relations that was intended to acknowledge a history of racism and inequity by design and to "develop transformative interventions designed to strengthen, enhance and support culture change," a college document said.Governing Board President Nora Vargas credits Murillo's commitment for positioning Southwestern College as a model of equity in the California Community College System."Murillo's transformative changes would have taken any other leader a decade to accomplish," Vargas said. "The work she has done will continue to benefit our students and our community for years to come.
