An 80-year-old Colorado woman received a surprise welcome home parade Monday after battling COVID-19 for months.Virginia Herrera was diagnosed in April and since then she's been hospitalized twice, spending time at a rehab facility."Every day I was trying to wake up and do everything they wanted me to do. It took a lot of effort, but I did it," Virginia Herrera said. The cancer survivor came down with bilateral pneumonia while battling COVID-19. Doctors had to put her in a medically induced coma for 20 days. She also had to undergo a tracheotomy after using a ventilator to help with her breathing."Oh my gosh, I've been going through ventilators, and a trec. A lot of medication and treatments," Virginia Herrera said. Before she was diagnosed with the virus, she worked as a Nutritional Manager for Fremont County Head Start for more than 50 years. A job that her family says brought her joy. Dozens of her coworkers filled a Fremont County Head Start bus to participate in the welcome home parade. Neighbors stood on the street corners in support."We feel it's a miracle that Virginia has lived through this, 97 days and 60 something days on a ventilator," said Rick Archuletta, a neighbor. "We were praying for her, hoping she would come through OK and Gloria, her daughter, has kept us up to date on Facebook."While she was in the hospital, her family was unable to visit her. They say God and the power of prayer got them through this difficult time."Our grandma is a woman of God and that is the main reason that got all of our family through this. He’s the first athlete with Down syndrome to complete a full triathlon.Nikic finished Saturday’s 2.4-mile swim, 122-mile bike and 26.2-mile run in 16 hours, 46 minutes and nine seconds. He needed to complete the race in 17 hours to earn the title of Ironman.21-year-old Nikic, who lives in Maitland, Florida, says he didn’t let any obstacles come in his way despite being stung by fire ants and falling off his bicycle.“I decided to get back up and fight my way through,” he explained.Dan Grieb, Chris’ coach, was there by his side throughout the entire race. “He woke up as a boy with Down syndrome and went to bed an Ironman,” Dan explained Monday morning while packing up his bags to leave Panama City Beach.Grieb recalled a conversation he had with Nik Nikic, Chris’ dad, moments before the race. “I told his dad ‘Nik, you’ve done an amazing job with your boy for 21 years. Milwaukee County completed its portion of Wisconsin’s partial presidential recount Friday night after the Milwaukee County Board of Canvassers certified the results.Milwaukee County ultimately recounted nearly 460,000 votes. President-elect Joe Biden gained 257 votes and President Donald Trump added 125 votes compared to Milwaukee County’s official canvass results. Biden netted an additional 132 votes to his margin of victory in Wisconsin, but Dane County’s recount has yet to finish.All that stood in the way of completing Milwaukee County’s recount Friday morning was 65 missing ballots from the city of Milwaukee. Those ballots were never found, so the board of canvassers decided to certify the results of all the other ballots in the county.Tens of thousands of ballots were separated during the recount at the Trump campaign’s request. 51,060 Milwaukee County voters self-certified that they were ‘indefinitely confined’ during the election. All of those voters who submitted their ballots had their ballot envelopes set aside for objections by Trump’s representatives.Additionally, 2,197 absentee ballot envelopes were separated because they had a different color ink on the witness address line, likely indicating clerks or poll workers filled in that missing information as allowed in the state.The board of canvassers decided that those votes would still count. The Trump campaign believes both categories could be fraudulent. Rick Bass, the only republican on the county’s 3-person board of canvassers, suggested those ballots will be subject to a Trump campaign legal challenge at a later date.“I trust that the Trump campaign is looking forward to its day in court,” commissioner Rick Baas said. “There were a number of things that had to be corrected and they’re often represented as just human error and usually they are. There are some things that couldn’t be examined, they’ll be examined at a different venue.
