DALIAN: Visiting Japanese lawmakers said on Saturday they were confident that China-Japan relations would develop further, and sport may have something to do with it."Japan and China are partners and our relations are facing good momentum of development and opportunities," Seishiro Eto, a member of the Japanese House of Representatives and former vice-minister of foreign affairs, said.During this visit to China, Eto also wore another hat: that of captain of the Japanese lawmaker soccer team. On Saturday, the team played a friendly soccer match with Chinese lawmakers in the coastal city of Dalian, Liaoning Province.The Chinese team has 35 members with an average age of 45. Most are deputies to the National People's Congress (NPC) including government officials, scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers and doctors.Participants from Japan are 23 lawmakers from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, its coalition partner the New Komeito Party, the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan, the Japanese Communist Party and the People's New Party.Both sides said "soccer diplomacy" was aimed at deepening friendship. "Ping-pong diplomacy broke the ice in the Sino-US relationship during the early 1970s - and now another sport, soccer, has become a new way to improve Sino-Japanese relations," Lu Yongxiang, vice-chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, said.Lu said China-Japan ties had entered a new phase after former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe's "ice-breaking" visit to China last October and Premier Wen Jiabao's "ice-thawing" visit to Japan this April.The game was particularly important as this year marks the 35th anniversary of the normalization of bilateral ties.He said it was the first time that NPC deputies engaged in a sports exchange with Japan.There was a push to hold a soccer match among Japanese, Chinese and South Korean lawmakers next year in Japan, as well as form a cheering squad for Japan during the next year's Beijing Olympic Games, he added.During the friendly soccer match, whenever there was a physical confrontation, players helped each other to get up and shook hands. China Securities Regulatory Commission announced here on Friday that it has approved the initial public offering (IPO) plans of three domestic companies.     They are the Sichuan-based software and equipment provider Wisesoft, nitrocellulose producer Sichuan Nitrocell Corporation, and husbandry company Shandong Minhe.     It also approved the issue of three stock funds, bringing the total of newly approved funds of this kind to 18 since February. A bond fund also won approval.     New funds approved since February equals half of all funds approved last year, which would injects more capital into the declining stock market.     Though the market is less sensitive to new fund issue as more funds win approval, the accumulation of capital would possibly lead to positive short-term change in the market, analysts said.

"This indicates an expansion of the giant panda's habitat -- and probably of its population too," Huang Huali, vice director of the Baishuijiang Nature Reserve Administration, was quoted as saying. The pandas have been helped by efforts to curb insect pests, which have restored the bamboo forests since 2002, Huang said. China's State Forestry Administration has estimated 1,590 pandas live in the wild, mostly in the mountains of Sichuan, although a study by Chinese and British scientists released last year calculated there could be as many as 3,000.

SHANGHAI -- China will launch its first Mars probe in October 2009 as part of a joint mission with Russia, said sources with the Shanghai Space Administration, the main developer of the probe, on Monday. Researchers are "pressing ahead" with the project for a synchronized launching with a Russian probe, said Chen Changya, a researcher with the Shanghai Institute of Satellite Engineering, at a space technology exhibition. He said the home-developed Chinese probe is scheduled for completion by June 2009. The probe, 75 centimeters long, 75 centimeters wide, 60 centimeters high and weighing 110 kilograms, is designed to be able to serve a two-year mission, according to Chen. Its model is on display at the exhibition. The Chinese probe, with Russia's Phobos-Grunt, will be launched by a Russian carrier rocket, Chen said. They are expected to land on Mars in 2010 after 10 month's flight.
