SAN DIEGO — Three teenagers were taken into custody in three separate attempts to smuggle fentanyl across the U.S.-Mexico border, according to federal officials.U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said the incidents occurred on March 30 and 31 at the San Ysidro Port of Entry near San Diego, California.On Friday, CBP agents stopped a 17-year-old Mexican citizen. After noticing an "anomaly" on the teen's back, agents conducted a pat down and found two packages strapped to his back. The packages contained four pounds of fentanyl — a street value of 1,000.The next day, CBP agents stopped two more male teens within 10 minutes of each other: a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old. Both were found to have packages of fentanyl strapped to their backs. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former Mira Mesa dentist who bilked insurance companies out of hundreds of thousands of dollars by submitting claims for procedures she never performed, including hundreds of supposed root canals, has been sentenced to six years in state prison, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office announced today.April Rose Ambrosio, 59, pleaded guilty to three counts of insurance fraud earlier this year for fraudulently billing insurance companies for 6,700, for which she received more than 0,000 from 10 insurance companies, according to prosecutors.The DA's Office said Ambrosio falsely claimed she performed 800 root canals on 100 patients, despite not having specialized training as an endodontist to perform such procedures.Ambrosio was sentenced earlier this month, and in addition to a six- year prison term, was ordered to pay 5,633 in restitution. Her license to practice dentistry was also suspended last year, a few months after she was charged.Prosecutors say the fraud occurred between 2014 and 2018. During that time, Ambrosio billed for work she said occurred on days her office was closed and billed for more than 100 root canals during a three- month period, all of which were supposedly performed for a family of four, according to the DA's Office. SAN DIEGO -- A Los Angeles police officer pleaded not guilty Friday to smuggling two Mexican nationals in East San Diego County.Mambasse Koulabalo Patara was arrested at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Campo Border Patrol Checkpoint, about 12 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border.The court documents claim Patara told Border Patrol agents he was an off-duty officer and showed them his LAPD identification.Patara had two men inside his black Toyota Corolla and appeared to be very nervous, shaking and avoiding eye contact, the Border Patrol said.Agents seized Patara's service pistol from his waistband after he told them he was armed.Patara was taken into custody after authorities say two of the men inside the vehicle admitted they were not U.S. citizens.Fermin Lopez and his nephew, German Ramirez-Gonzalez, admitted to being citizens of Mexico.At his arraignment, Patara pleaded not guilty.
