SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect they say tried to kidnap a 13-year-old girl on her way home from school.According to police, the victim was walking home on the 700 block of Picador Boulevard near Montgomery Middle School in Otay Mesa West when she noticed she was being followed by a black van.The van pulled up next to the girl and opened the door when the man inside asked the 13-year-old if she wanted a ride home.The suspect then grabbed the victim by the wrist and tried to pull her into the van before she was able to escape and run home.A witness driving by saw the 13-year-old talking with the suspect and made a U-turn before seeing the victim run away.The suspect is described as a white male between 50-60-years-old with glasses, a full beard and a raspy voice. Police say the van had a “J” or a “K” in the plate. 870

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Quiet neighborhood walks have turned disturbing for a growing number of women in Rancho Bernardo.Along Paseo Lucido, feet from a park, Lauren was walking her dog one early evening two weeks ago. She walked past the passenger side of an older, white, 2-door Toyota."The front windows were down and the seat was back ... looked over inside the car and saw he was exposing himself and touching himself," said Lauren.'He' was a large man in his 30s with short dark hair."He smiled when he saw me looking. I immediately looked away. Just very anxious and scared," said Lauren.Lauren took off for a neighbor's house. When she returned minutes later, the car was gone. About a week later - around 6:30 a.m. last Thursday - Robbie was blocks away on Avenida Venusto when a similar car, driven by a man with a similar description, pulled ahead of her and parked in a red zone."Kind of slouched back. He has his pants down, and he's actively touching himself," said Robbie.And again, the stranger met a woman's glance before driving off."And he looked up at me with a big smile on his face," said Robbie. These women aren't alone, as Lauren found out when she posted her incident on the Nextdoor app for her area."There are at least seven other women who have encountered this person in the last few months," said Lauren.In many cases, the women report the car pulling ahead and stopping. "I think he's targeting women who are walking by themselves or slowly walking their dogs by themselves," said Lauren.In one of the other reports, a woman says the man was driving a gray Honda. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Neighbors in Ocean Beach and Point Loma are hoping new surveillance video will help arson investigators find whomever is responsible for a series of fires over the weekend. The video was taken from a yard near one of the fires. It shows a man walking in and out of frame then moments later, neighbors say, another fire stared. The fires all happened early Saturday morning within hours and just miles of each other. Arson investigators are calling the fires suspicious , all of them started in people's backyards. San Diego Police tell 10News they're still working to find out if the fires are related and also looking at the surveillance video to find out if the man in the video is a suspect. Detectives ask that anyone else with video, turn it over to the department. 799

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Over the next three days, City of San Diego crews will remove hundreds of palm trees from the Rueda Canyon in Tierrasanta by helicopter.The city is working with the San Diego Canyonlands nonprofit and the San Diego River Conservancy throughout the process, which is expected to last through Friday.Hikers and joggers are warned not to enter the canyon while the tree removal is underway.“It’s extremely dangerous for anyone to be in there, it’ll actually stop the operations,” said Eric Bowlby, Executive Director of San Diego Canyonlands.The palm trees are not native to this region. Bowlby added they aggressively establish themselves and grow along the narrow stream at the bottom of canyons. The trees absorb so much water, they hinder the growth of all the native plants in the area.Because these palm trees grow so quickly, they’re also very hard to maintain. Dead fronds often create a skirt around the trees that’s not only a fire hazard but also becomes an area for pests, like rats, to live and breed.“We’re going to be removing some 300 mature Mexican Fan and Canary Island Palm Trees from Rueda Canyon,” said Bowlby. “That would be about 90,000 pounds of fuel that would otherwise remain in the canyon and in the event of a fire add a tremendous amount of danger and fuel to the community.”Once the trees are removed, they will be replace with trees native to our region, like Willows and Coast Live Oaks.The project was funded with money from a state grant. 1498
