STATEN ISLAND — A Staten Island City Councilmember is leading the push for the borough to secede.Joe Borelli (R), who represents the 51st District and lives on Staten Island, will be introducing two proposals to form a committee and to begin a study to look at secession.Staten Islanders have long felt like they are the “forgotten borough.”Of the 51 member city council, Staten Island only has three, Borelli one of the three. Residents said they have mixed feelings about the matter.“It’s been a staple of the five boroughs,” said Tariq Harmon, a 27-year-resident of Staten Island “It has to be five boroughs other than that it wouldn’t be New York City, you losing everything.”“It’s kind of tough, we’re always fending for our own I feel like we’re always the last borough to get support,” said Annette Lyudin.Lyudin and her husband, Alex, are raising a family on the Island, where they’ve lived for the past four years, after moving from Brooklyn.“It’s quiet, safe, great schools, great restaurants, it’s a relaxing place to live,” said Alex Lyudin.Of course as any New Yorker knows, this is not the first time there has been talk of secession. The last time it gained traction was 30 years ago in 1989.In a 1990 referendum, more than 80 percent of Staten Islanders voted to begin the secession process.Then on Election Day in November 1993, 65% of Staten Islanders voted by ballot in favor of becoming an independent city.But a vote never made it to the state level, many blaming then New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver for refusing to put it to a vote at the state level.As it did back then, questions now arise such as Will the borough survive financially on its own? It's a question many people have when they run to the mailbox or even pick up groceries at the store.The National Institutes of Health says a study suggested the virus that causes COVID-19 can stay on surfaces like plastic and stainless steel for up to three days. The study also found the virus can live on cardboard for up to 24 hours. "The question exists, just because the virus has the capacity to survive on these surfaces, we don’t know that just that living virus can then turn into an infection as well," said Dr. Paul Nanda of Tampa General Hospital Urgent Care.The CDC reported it may be possible to get coronavirus after touching a contaminated surface and then touching your face, though the World Health Organization says that likelihood is low. The virus is thought to spread mainly person to person through respiratory droplets when someone sneezes or coughs.When it comes to your mail and packages, Dr. Nanda says you shouldn't have a problem.“Usually when mail and packages are in transit, they’re in transit long enough that if there was any contamination or virus on that packaging that enough time would’ve elapsed and it would be safe,” said Nanda.Dr. Nanda has heard of people creating a staging area in their garage to leave packages for an additional 24 hours after delivery. He says being extra cautious won't hurt you.Dr. Marissa Levine, a professor of public health and family medicine at USF, wants people to get into a routine of washing your hands."Just wash your hands, soap and water, 20 seconds. That’s the best thing that you can do," said Levine. "If the box or the surface is something you might use or touch frequently, then it wouldn’t be wrong to disinfect those surfaces.”If you get an envelope, package, or groceries, health experts suggest washing your hands, handle the items, and then sanitize again when you're done.Agencies like USPS, UPS, and FEDEX have taken extra precautions like using sanitizers, following social distancing guidelines, and no longer requiring signatures for some deliveries. STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. – A suspected car thief was arrested after authorities say he was caught using a homemade license plate, drawn in crayon on a paper grocery bag. On Thursday, Indiana State Police say troopers stopped to lend a hand to 20-year-old Joshua Anthony Lewis-Brown when they spotted him stranded along the I-80 Toll Road. Initially, officers found Lewis-Brown tending to a flat tire on a Toyota Corolla. The man said he was unable to change the tire and he was in need of a tow truck. Preparing to oblige Lewis-Brown’s request, police say troopers spotted the suspicious license plate on the car and began to investigate further. Officers ran a check on the vehicle identification number (VIN) and discovered the Corolla had been reported stolen out of State College, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday. They also found that the driver, a resident of Rochester, New York, had never actually been licensed to operate a motor vehicle in any state and was on probation for grand larceny. Lewis-Brown was placed under arrest and transported him to the Steuben County Jail, where he was booked and charged with possession of stolen property and operating without ever obtaining a license. He’ll be held on the Indiana charges before being extradited back to Pennsylvania to face local charges.Police say the stolen vehicle had been left unattended and unlocked with the engine running outside a Pennsylvania grocery store. The owner, wanting to keep his car warming in the cold weather, had run into make a quick purchase, only to find his car missing upon return, according to police. “In light of this particular circumstance, the Indiana State Police would remind all motorists that leaving your vehicle unattended with the engine running and doors unlocked, is never a good idea,” wrote police. “Auto theft is often a common occurrence during the winter months. This is especially true in our urban neighborhoods where we find a higher concentration of residents wanting to warm their cars unattended in the frigid early morning hours prior to the morning commute.” 2081
