SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — At least one person was injured and another person was trapped following a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 on Wednesday.San Diego Police said three vehicles were involved in a collision on southbound I-5 at SR-905 just before 4:30 p.m.An officer received minor injuries in the crash, according to SDPD. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County health officials say they are taking aggressive measures to contain a flu outbreak at San Diego's migrant shelter. At least 16 migrants have shown flu-like symptoms; all were recently flown to San Diego from Texas by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement.Three migrants tested positive with a rapid influenza test."In order to take steps to prevent the spread of the disease we've become more aggressive in treating everyone with symptoms, regardless of when those symptoms started," said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, Deputy Public Health Officer for the County.RELATED: Flu outbreak sickens over 30 migrants at border centerBefore being admitted to the shelter, migrants undergo medical screenings.Migrants with flu-like symptoms are being isolated off-site in hotel rooms, along with their family members who are receiving preventative medicine.On Thursday, County Supervisors Dianne Jacob and Nathan Fletcher expressed their continued frustration with the federal government's handling of the migrant crisis. "Had we not taken these steps these migrant families would have been released by ICE at bus stops or transit centers without the medical screenings, without the treatment, without the attention, and without the help and support that we have provided. This could have proved disastrous for our region," said Fletcher. Fletcher says while they don't know how many people may develop flu-like symptoms in the days and weeks ahead, they are actively monitoring the population. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the country celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, people in San Diego are looking back at how companies in this city helped NASA achieve the historic flight.You could argue that, if not for San Diego, the moon landing would never have gotten off the ground, or landed safely on the moon.Ryan Aeronautical Company built the lunar radar system that helped guide the lunar lander as it touched down on the moon's surface.General Dynamics built the Atlas Rockets that took some of the flights into outer-space."They didn't take them all the way up to the moon with the Atlas, but they helped set the stage to move forward to doing it," says San Diego Air and Space Museum Marketing Director David Neville.The museum has an Atlas Rocket on display at Gillespie Field, towering above the skyline. It also has the Apollo 9 capsule at Balboa Park.One of the docents at the museum worked on the antennaes that helped the capsules stay in constant contact with mission control."I can bring people over here and point to it and say that's what I did," says Ronald Pitcher, who volunteers at the museum and was an engineer working on the Mercury capusule, the Gemini and the Apollo spacecrafts. "It's a proud moment to be able to do that."Pitcher says he feels privileged to have played a small role in landing a man on the moon. He wishes the US had sent more people up."There's no question in my mind that we should go back," he says. "We should have done it when we had the technology and the poeple and experience and facilities in place."Saturday night, on the 50th anniversary of the landing, the Air and Space Museum will host a party to celebrate. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As businesses continue to reopen, it's becoming the newest requirement for entry: your signature.Step into any of three Gila Rut salons in the county, and you'll see COVID-19 safety is being taken seriously. Clients' temperatures are taken. Their hands are sanitized. Their personal effects are placed in a bag. In another bag is everything needed for their appointment, from combs to scissors."So they can feel comfortable that when they sit down, everything has been sanitized for them," said Gila Rut President Keri Davis-Duffy.Inside the salon: masks, social distancing, and capes disposed of after each appointment. The owners are intent on protecting clients, staff and also, the business. A day head of an appointment, clients are emailed a waiver."They have to sign a waiver releasing Gila Rut of any liability should anybody contract COVID-19," said David-Duffy.Davis-Duffy is hardly alone. At the Point Loma Sports Club, set to open Friday, a liability waiver is also required before you can enter. Across the county and country, at salons, gyms, offices and even the New York Stock Exchange, waivers are quietly becoming the new normal. It's unclear how much they're really needed. Attorneys tell us it would be hard to prove a business caused an illness. and the waivers don't protect a business against 'gross neglience.'"If someone signs a waiver, that means they agree not to hold someone else responsible for any damages. What we're seeing here are businesses trying to avoid liability when a patron is exposed to covid-19 at their place of business. Waivers are not, however, ironclad. For a business to be protected, the business must show that such a waiver was signed and that it covers the potential claim. Even if a business shows that, a waiver is invalid if the business was grossly negligent or reckless. Also, a person could challenge a waiver by claiming it was signed under duress or that it was unconscionable," said attorney Evan Walker.For Davis-Duffy, the waiver is simply another precaution."We're in a vulnerable business ... We just want to make sure we're protecting are business and create some sense of sustainability," said David-Duffy.Davis-Duffy says all but a handful of clients have agreed to sign the waiver. 2279
