Fiat Chrysler is recalling 4.8 million vehicles over an issue that could prevent drivers from turning off cruise control.Only one incident related to the malfunction has been reported to Fiat Chrysler, and there are no reported injuries. The issue can be triggered when a driver taps on the gas pedal while cruise control is activated, the company said, potentially causing a short circuit.Related: Why the auto tariffs would be bad for AmericaWhen that happens, the vehicle can become locked in cruise control. The typical methods for exiting cruise control — tapping on the brakes or hitting the designated switch — can stop working. However, drivers would still be able to slow down or stop their vehicles by hitting the brakes, shifting into neutral or both.FCA is asking owners of the recalled vehicles to bring them into dealerships for a no-cost software update that can prevent the short circuit. In the meantime, the company is advising drivers of the involved vehicles to avoid using cruise control. The models covered under the recall include:2015-17 Chrysler 200 sedan2014-18 Chrysler 300 sedan2017-18 Chrysler Pacifica minivan 1145

Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed Senate Bill 7026 into law Friday, the first gun control legislation enacted in the state after the Parkland school massacre on February 14.The new law, known as the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, tightens gun control in several ways but also allows some teachers to be armed."The hardest thing I've ever had to do as governor is try to console a parent who has lost a child," said Scott, surrounded by families of the victims. Scott received the bill Thursday following days of impassioned, often contentious debate in the majority-Republican House and Senate.  631

Former prisoners are helping former prisoners break in to college courses.  The Urban Scholars Union is a relatively new organization created by ex-cons for ex-cons looking to better themselves through education. USU’s President Cesar Garcia said they started 18 months ago at San Diego City College to help “justice impacted” students succeed. “[We want to] empower them and motivate them to be productive members of society,” said Garcia. “We’re not monsters that they make us out to feel and make us out to be,” said San Diego City College student Ryan Rising. “We’re humans that made poor choices.” Rising spent 15 years behind bars for carjacking and attempted extortion but will matriculate to Cal Berkley on a scholarship after earning his Associate’s at City.“I’m super proud of myself,” he said. Garcia, who served seven years for a list of crimes, said the USU provides a space for former prisoners to get help, guidance, and support. The organization recently expanded to Southwestern College and is working on helping students at Mesa and Grossmont Colleges. USU also recently received its largest donation to date.  Current prisoners at Donovan Correctional in Otay Mesa donated ,000 to USU for scholarships and grants for former prisoners. “It just goes to show you how we do look out for each other,” said Garcia. “We just need go out and advocate to erase all these stigmas,” said Rising. 1470

Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency Saturday for all 67 counties in the state as Subtropical Storm Alberto heads toward the Gulf of Mexico. The first named storm of this season, Alberto is expected to strengthen as it moves up the Gulf this weekend, the National Hurricane Center said, bringing heavy rains and possible floods to Florida and much of the Southeast in the coming days."Do not think that only areas in the cone will be impacted -- everyone in our state must be prepared," Scott said in a statement.Click here to track the stormCuba is expected to get as much as 15 inches of rain, the hurricane center said in an advisory Saturday morning, and the Florida Keys and South Florida could get as much as 10 inches."Swells from Alberto will create dangerous surf and rip currents along the Gulf Coast," the National Weather Service said. The center of the storm is expected to be move close to the western tip of Cuba on Saturday afternoon, then track up the eastern Gulf of Mexico in the night through Monday.Hurricane season doesn't officially begin until June 1, but Alberto apparently missed the memo. The tropical system became a subtropical storm Friday, the hurricane center said. As it travels up the warm waters of the Gulf, it could well become a full tropical storm. As of 11 a.m. ET Saturday, parts of Cuba and the Florida Keys were under a tropical storm warning, and a tropical storm watch is in effect for parts of Florida, Georgia and Louisiana, meaning the conditions for a full storm are possible in the next 48 hours. The early storm doesn't necessarily mean it will be a busier-than-usual hurricane season though. The official National Hurricane Center forecast released Thursday said the season is likely to be near or above normal.The-CNN-Wire 1796

Florida Republican Governor Rick Scott, who is involved in a tight contest with incumbent Democratic US Senator Bill Nelson for one of the state's US Senate seat, made claims on Thursday that officials in two Florida counties are tampering with election results. Scott, using his authority as governor, got involved in his own race by ordering law enforcement officials to investigate board of election actions in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Scott's US Senate campaign, along with the Republican Senate campaign arm, filed a lawsuit claiming that election officials in Broward County are refusing to release public records. “Every Floridian should be concerned there may be rampant fraud happening in both Broward and Palm Beach counties,” the governor said.Officials in the two Florida counties, which are Democratic-leaning, are continuing to count ballots two days after the polls closed. As of Thursday evening, Scott leads Nelson by .2 percent. That margin is a bit smaller than from Election Night when Scott led by more than a half percent. Any result within .25 percent triggers an automatic hand recount. Nelson released the following statement following Scott's announcement: “The goal here is to see that all the votes in Florida are counted and counted accurately. Rick Scott’s action appears to be politically motivated and borne out of desperation.”Meanwhile in the gubernatorial race in Florida, Republican Ron DeSantis has seen his lead evaporate from over 1 percent on Election Night to under .5 percent on Thursday. His challenger, Democrat Andrew Gillum, had previously conceded the election, but on Thursday, told supporters that he was hiring lawyers to make sure every vote is counted. Gillum tweeted the following Thursday evening: "Mr. @FLGovScott — counting votes isn't partisan — it's democracy. Count every vote."President Donald Trump weighed in on Thursday on Scott's announcement. 1973
