MEXICO CITY (AP) — Demonstrators in Mexico have burned government vehicles, blocked railway tracks and set fire to a government office and highway tollbooths to protest water payments to the United States. Mexico has fallen behind in the amount of water it must send north under a 1944 treaty, but farmers in the northern state of Chihuahua are angry because they want the water for their own crops. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Thursday that the protests were being fanned by opposition politicians for their own motives. He said there was enough water to comply with the treaty and support local crops. 626

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Oprah Winfrey is using her influence to push for justice in the police killing of Breonna Taylor. The media mogul is having dozens of billboards installed around the city of Louisville, WAVE reports. A total of 26 signs are going up, one for every year of Taylor’s life. The billboards encourage onlookers to “demand that the police involved in killing Breonna Taylor be arrested and charged.”The signs also encourage people to visit the website for Until Freedom, a social justice organization created to address systemic and racial injustice.??Billboard Alert??26 billboards - for every year of life of #BreonnaTaylor erected in Louisville, KY.Kentucky will not forget her name. We will get justice for Breonna. pic.twitter.com/rOM2bhVdAy— untilfreedom (@untilfreedom) August 6, 2020 The erecting of the signs isn’t the first action Oprah has taken in the call for justice. She also honored Taylor by featuring her on the front of her O Magazine’s September issue, the first person besides Oprah herself to be on the cover of the publication.#BreonnaTaylor for our September cover. pic.twitter.com/yyulcONtgv— O The Oprah Magazine (@oprahmagazine) July 30, 2020 Taylor died on March 13 after three Louisville police officers executing a search warrant used a battering ram to enter her home. The 26-year-old emergency room technician and her boyfriend were in bed. After a brief exchange, Taylor’s boyfriend reportedly fired his gun and then police fired shots, striking Taylor at least eight times. She died in the apartment hallway.Since Taylor’s death, protests have been held across the country, demanding that the officers involved be charged in her killing. Many celebrities other than Oprah have also used their platforms to call for action. For now, the shooting is under investigation by the FBI and Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron. Both are deciding whether criminal charges are warranted in the case. 1945

Many schools are taking a different approach in helping children in school improve behavior.Dee Marie is bringing yoga to classrooms. She says she saw a need to teach non-violent coping skills after Columbine, so she created the non-profit group Calming Kids. The group teamed up with researchers at Harvard University to study the effects.“We got up to 93 percent less hitting,” Marie says. “We got incredible increase up to 86 percent increase in focus. Focus on their classwork, focus on their homework.”The simple techniques of the yoga practice are transforming behavior, even the behavior of bullies.“Students were able to settle in themselves better and started to get some ah-ha moments,” Marie says. “And what was really interesting was that the bullies started to recognize that they were bullies.”Marie’s program is global, reaching several states, Mexico and Puerto Rico. She's going back to the West Bank to teach for a second time next year.Similar programs are offered to help children.Jim and Lyneea Gillen started Yoga Calm when they saw students with learning disabilities or impacted by trauma having a tough time.“Initially I tried to get kids into counseling, but there weren't many services in a small town, and when there were, they weren't affordable for families,” explains Lyneea Gillen. The couple got their business accredited and began tracking results.“72 percent of the kids reported using the techniques at home unsolicited in a response to stress,” Jim Gillen says. Both programs now offer online courses.“It’s a solution to some of the problems we're seeing in schools right now,” Lyneea says. “I think we've met a need.”In Baltimore, some schools have even swapped detention for a meditation and mindfulness room and saw fewer children getting referred for discipline. 1812

Lyft announced on Monday that they'll provide 60 million rides to and from vaccination sites for low-income, uninsured, and at-risk communities when COVID-19 vaccines become ready. To help launch the initiative, the ride-sharing company said in a press release that it's partnering with JPMorgan Chase, Anthem Inc., United Way, Epic, Centene Corporation, Modern Health, One Medical, National Hispanic Council on Aging, National Asian Pacific Center on Aging, National Urban League, and the National Action Network."Making sure people can get to vaccination sites when they need to is mission-critical to beating this virus," Lyft Co-Founder and President John Zimmer said in a statement. "This is an opportunity to use our collective strength to mobilize on a massive scale and serve our communities. We cannot let the lack of transportation be a factor in determining whether people have access to healthcare."To make sure people living in underserved communities can get vaccinated, companies and social impact organizations would provide free or discounted rides, while its corporate partners would directly fund the rides. The community partners will also route ride credits for those in need. The news comes after Uber announced last week that it would provide 10 million free or discounted rides to help people make it to their vaccination appointments. 1365
