Laird officially became 'Mom' to the last of the crew, little Scotland, 11 months old."It's just very peaceful to know that no one is going to come and take her," said Laird.Scotland was the last of the five biological sisters to be formally adopted by Laird, though she went to live with Laird in January at just 12 days old. The adoption ceremony took place on Saturday, November 17 at Durango Juvenile Court Center as part of National Adoption Day. With food and entertainment, it was an all-out celebration in Phoenix, and a fun time for kids who have had a rough start in life.The pomp and circumstance may feel contradictory because the underlying issue is a national crisis. According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there are more than 400,000 kids in foster care across the country. Of that number, there are more than 15,000 in Arizona alone, according to the latest numbers from CASA of Arizona.Baby Scotland's adoption ceremony was just one of several Judge Randall Warner presided over on Saturday. They educated dozens of riders on the rules, saying riders need to wear a helmet. They've given out dozens of tickets as well, since Friday.Skateboards and roller skates are also not allowed on the boardwalk. Jake Kostreba said he rides on the boardwalk all the time and was frustrated at why he received a ticket, "I mean I guess someone needs to clean up the beach so, I'll be that guy, so whatever, it's pretty dirty."Police say he lost control of his board and it hit a woman's shin.Visitors told 10News they don't mind the extra police presence.Ruqayyah Abdulrahoof drove down from Los Angeles, "I think it's really important to see the police over here especially with the kids and the beach I think it's really important to make sure the people have a good safe memorial day weekend and nobody's drinking I think it's a great place, and good to see officers are making an effort."Scot Brantley came down with his wife and baby from Washington for a friend's crossfit tournament and echoed the sentiment, "I think we feel safe you know people are out here enjoying having a good time so nothing too crazy so far but it's early it's early though."On the beach, lifeguards have been busy as well, rescuing 20 people and rendering medical aid to 47 Saturday. Chula Vista, San Diego City and County will all have checkpoints set up, looking for impaired drivers. PLACENTIA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say two sport utility vehicles have plowed into a Goodwill store in Southern California, injuring five people.Orange County fire Capt. Tony Bommarito says an 88-year-old woman rear-ended a parked car shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday in Placentia, pushing the SUV all the way into the store. The woman's SUV wound up partially inside.The woman was taken to the hospital with a trauma injury, but she's expected to survive.Bommarito says a 14-year-old boy in the SUV that was struck and three women inside the store — two shoppers and an employee — were treated for minor injuries. 620

People in Boston came together Sunday to run a course that spelled out the city's name, five years after deadly bomb blasts went off during the Boston Marathon.The city's triathlon team, Zoom Multisport, began what they call the #BostonRun two weeks after the 2013 bombings, said Greg Soutiea, one of the organizers. Several members of the club were stopped short of finishing the race or, for the ones who did finish, they were still downtown when the bombs exploded."A lot of people on our team needed closure," Soutiea said. "It was a way for our team to come together ... and support each other."Between 10 and 15 people ran that first year, he said; this year, about 150 people participated."We were all affected by the tragic events that occurred on a day that has always been so special to us," the club said on Instagram.
