Members of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and leading officials of relevant departments attended the meeting as non-voting delegates. JINAN, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has called on authorities to give more support to the country's major grain production areas so to ensure grain supply and security.Hui made the comments while attending a grain production seminar held in Yantai City of east China's Shandong Province on Friday and Saturday.The vice premier demanded efforts be undertaken to promote agricultural production in the country's major grain production areas, which he said were of great importance to China's agricultural development.Hui urged authorities to offer financial assistance to these areas and ensure the continuous increase of farmers' incomes.China was facing and would be confronted by increasing challenges in grain production, such as the challenge to meet market demand for agricultural products and ensure quality, Hui said.To address these challenges, he said China must improve support to farmers to increase their enthusiasm for growing grain.Efforts should also go to improving production capacity in the agriculture sector, promoting agricultural technology progress and accelerating agricultural reform, the vice premier said.During the rest of the year, relative authorities should focus on improving agricultural production management and disaster prevention to guarantee a bumper autumn grain harvest, as well as ensuring market supplies and price stabilization of commodities such as vegetable, meat, grain and edible oil, he said.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers combing the mud-slide debris found more than a dozen bodies Friday, bringing the death toll of typhoon Fanapi to 70 in south China's Guangdong Province, while 65 people remain missing, local disaster relief authorities said.The bodies were recovered after work crews entered towns cut off by mud-slides such as Magui Township in Maoming City, the provincial flood control authorities said.Helicopters were dispatched Friday to send relief goods -- bottled water, food, and tents, to floods-isolated areas in the hardest-hit counties of Gaozhou, Xinyi and Yangchun, the authorities said.About nine tons of goods have been delivered on Friday.By 6 p.m. Friday, about 99,500 people in Guangdong were evacuated for the Fanapi-brought disasters. Some 3,765 houses collapsed, 42,190 hectares of farmland were damaged, and the economic loss reached 2.4 billion yuan, latest official data show.Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon that hit China this year, landed in Fujian Province at 7 a.m. Monday, but wreaked most havoc in Guangdong, which neighbors Fujian on the south.No casualties have been reported in Fujian.

GUANGZHOU, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in south China's Guangzhou, host city of the 2010 Asian Games, Saturday said it will cancel a newly-launched free public transportation service due to the enormous public response, which might pose a security threat to the Asian Games.The government earlier this month launched the color-coding scheme for vehicles, effectively grounding half of the city's 2.1 million private cars and those entering the city each day during the Asian Games.As a remedy, free public transport service was to be offered for 30 working days beginning November 1.The offer was met with unprecedented enthusiasm from Guangzhou residents. For days, subway trains were often crammed and stations were full as swarms of people lined up to take a free ride.Now, officials with Guangzhou's transportation authorities said they had to rescind the offer as more than 8 million passengers took the subway on an average day beginning November 1, a figure "much, much higher" than the subway system was designed to carry.Further, traffic controls were put into force 144 times during the week, which "seriously affects the normal security checks required for the Games" and causes "great inconvenience," officials said.Guangzhou authorities plan to roll back the free-day scheme on Nov. 8 and replace it with a cash subsidy program in which each household in Guangzhou will receive 150 yuan as a transportation subsidy from the government.The Asian Games are scheduled to begin on November 12, featuring 11,700 athletes competing in 42 sports.
