Heads (and eyes) up, skywatchers! The annual Perseid meteor shower is underway and will hit its peak this weekend. The meteor shower, so named because the meteors appear to come from the constellation Perseus, lasts for several weeks – from July 17 to Aug. 24 – but peak meteor activity will take place between about 4 p.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 12 and 4 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, according to NASA.During the peak, one can expect to see as many as 60 or 70 meteors per hour.Night sky conditions should be great for meteor viewing: The peak coincides perfectly with the new moon, meaning the sky will be plenty dark and meteors will be easy to spot. Most meteor showers are best after midnight. 702
Guests will get to visit one of the world's most famous landmarks after it was closed due to COVID-19.The Eiffel Tower is set to reopen June 25, and guests 11 years or older will be required to wear masks. The tower had been closed since March. On its website, officials said in a statement that as a safety protocol, guests would only be allowed to use stairs for the first and second floors.Officials added that the elevators and the top floor of the tower would remain closed for the time being."As the situation evolves, the lifts taking our visitors to the second floor can be quickly put back into service under appropriate conditions, with a minimal number of people on-board," officials said in the statement. "The top-level remains closed for now since the lifts taking visitors from second to the top floor are small. It might re-open during the summer."A re-opening date for the online ticket office has not been made available. 945

Hours after a chaotic presidential debate, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden embarked on a train tour through northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania on Wednesday.Biden made seven stops in towns and cities throughout the region. He delivered an address in Cleveland at about 10 a.m. ET upon his departure and his tour concluded in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, east of Pittsburgh.During several terms as a Delaware senator and throughout his time as Vice President, Biden became known for commuting back and forth between Washington and his home in Wilmington, Delaware via an Amtrak train, earning him the nickname "Amtrak Joe."On Tuesday evening, Biden and President Donald Trump traded political barbs and personal insults in a messy presidential debate. Trump often interrupted both Biden and moderator Chris Wallace, preventing either candidate from fully expressing their campaign positions.Recent national polls show Biden still holds a lead over Trump a month out from the election. However, Biden will need a strong showing in Pennsylvania — a state that went to Trump in the 2016 election. Polls show that Biden has a small lead in the Keystone State and that Ohio is currently a toss-up race. 1215
GOP officials across the US are standing up for facts regarding the election — @Commish_Schmidt in PA and @GaSecofState and a handful of others — but they are few and far between and under attack from other Republicans. Hazards created by Hawaii's Kilauea volcano have spawned a lot of questions from the public. How long will this last? Is it safe to be on Big Island right now? Can I roast marshmallows? The US Geological Survey has been answering those questions on social media. Here's a look at some of them. The questions have been edited for clarity and brevity.Q: Is it safe to roast marshmallows over volcanic vents?USGS: Erm...we're going to have to say no, that's not safe. (Please don't try!) If the vent is emitting a lot of SO2 [sulfur dioxide] or H2S [hydrogen sulfide], they would taste BAD. And if you add sulfuric acid (in vog, for example) to sugar, you get a pretty spectacular reaction.Q: Is it safe to be in Hawaii right now?USGS: The eruption at Kilauea right now is impacting a small portion of the Big Island. Lava flows are active on the eastern tip of the island, in lower Puna, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is closed due to the small explosions occurring at Kilauea's summit. But the Island of Hawaii is made up of 5 volcanoes, and only Kilauea is erupting.Even if there were to be a change in activity at Kilauea, it would not impact Hilo or Kailua-Kona (the largest towns on the island), which are located on different volcanoes. The biggest impacts might be vog, but that has been a persistent issue on the island for decades. You can actually get real-time vog information at sites around the island from the Hawaii Department of Health at http://www.hiso2index.info/. 1493
