SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- President Trump's decision to delay nationwide ICE raids by two weeks is not stopping some San Diego community advocates from working overtime, educating migrants to know their rights. For Benjamin Prado, "Deportation" is always on his mind. "We see a policy of terror," Prado said. As a community advocate for 'American Friends Service Committee,' he connects migrants with various services. He has worked with those who were arrested at the Zion Market ICE Raid in February 2019."Whether people have documents or not, people have the right to work, and people have the right to produce and create a meaningful life for themselves," Prado said. Saturday, President Trump disagreed saying, "Everybody that came into the country illegally will be brought out of the country very legally."So even when the President announced that he would delay the planned nationwide ICE Raids initially scheduled to begin Sunday, Prado's work remains the same. "We are on a permanent campaign of informing families what their rights are," Prado said. "What their constitutional rights are, ensuring that they know that they don't have to speak to immigration law-enforcement, that they don't have to open the door, that they should demand to see any form of warrants that they have, whether it be judicial or administrative warrants that ICE produces."In a Tweet Saturday, Gavin Newsom agreed saying, "When we talk about knowing your rights, 'no abras la puerta.' Without a warrant, you don't have to open the door."Prado says it is imperative that families have a serious conversation with their children and relatives now, to avoid what are called "collateral arrests.""There have been instances where Immigration and Customs Enforcement not only goes after the individual, but they also go after family members," Prado said. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A fire on the USS Bonhomme Richard at Naval Base San Diego started Sunday morning and as of Monday afternoon, continues to burn, adding smoke to the sky and raising concerns over air quality in San Diego.Related: USS Bonhomme Richard fire: 57 treated for injuries after fire erupts aboard Naval Base San Diego shipBill Brick is the Chief of Monitoring and Technical Services Division at the Air Pollution Control District and said there are concerns in some areas but not everywhere. He said they have received reports of people smelling the smoke as far away as Oceanside and Escondido. According to Brick, those people who are farther away may be able to smell the smoke but the particulate matter is less concentrated, so it should not pose a health risk.He said the people who should be aware of health concerns are those nearby the fire who end up directly in the path of the smoke due to wind and also those with prior health concerns such as asthma, lung or heart problems. He said if anyone is close enough to smell the smoke and also gets irritated eyes, they should also be aware that there could be health risks. For any of those people, he advises to avoid exercise, go inside and close the windows to avoid breathing in that air.Brick also said that a problem with this fire is they don’t know exactly what has burned. While the Navy has said they are still within EPA standards, Brick said the focus has been on fighting the fire so it has been hard for them to determine everything that has burned. Brick said they did take samples of the air to see if anything toxic is in the air, but those results will not come back for a few days, so he advises everyone to use caution while the fire still burns. 1751

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)  - A Marine was found dead Monday afternoon at the armory of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, according to military officials.The Marine had suffered a gunshot wound. No foul play is suspected, according to the U.S. Marine Corps.Military officials did not announce whether the incident was a suicide or accidental firing.The Marine’s identity has not been released. He or she was assigned to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.The MCAS Miramar Provost Marshal Office and MCAS Miramar Fire Department responded to the scene and are investigating the death. 580

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): In the wake of Starbucks and Disney doing away with plastic straws, environmental groups in San Diego want the city to do the same.The Surfrider Foundation is sponsoring a proposal that the San Diego City Council will vote on in September to require restaurants to only offer straws to customers who request them, instead of giving them out with every drink.They're also pushing for a ban on Styrofoam take-out containers.Natalie Roberts-Decarli, the Interim Executive Director of I Love a Clean San Diego, says her group wants people to be more conscious of the waste they create in their daily lives."Straws kind of fly around easily, they blow away easily, and they're not able to be recycled," she says. "So they end up in our landfills or just litter."At one ocean clean up event last year, I Love a Clean San Diego found 6,000 straws on the coast in just a few hours. Roberts-Decarli says plastic straws are always in the top ten items of trash they find."There's no perfect answer right now. Everyone is still trying to work together to come up with the best solution," she says.Many local restaurants have already taken that step. According to Surfrider, more than 100 restaurants in San Diego County are certified as "Ocean Friendly," meaning they follow a list of criteria for recycling and avoiding plastic. The full list is on their website.Marketing analysts say changes from big companies like Starbucks and Disney mean this will likely spread and expand."It raises the consciousness of consumers and it sets rising expectations in consumers," says Heather Honea, the Chair of San Diego State University's Marketing Department in the Fowler School of Business."By people banning it and having discussions about whether it's bad or good or what does it mean, how does it affect them, it creates top of mind salience that changes people's perspectives on things because they become aware of the topic. And for a moment, they think about it, ponder it and reconcile how they think about it," she says.Environmental groups say making the change would be easy for consumers, who could carry reusable straws in their purses or car glove compartments. They compare it to the reusable grocery bag change that happened in San Diego over the last few years.However, not everyone supports the idea. Some warn that the ban could be discriminatory against people with disabilities, many of whom require straws. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - California Gov. Gavin Newsom said indoor operations must close in the state, so some businesses like gyms and restaurants are moving outside. For the beauty industry, there’s a divide. While Newsom and San Diego County officials said businesses can move outside, the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology won’t allow it.Bahar Radman is a stylist at Del Beauty Box and said she already started cutting hair in her salon’s parking lot. She said it works because there is more space to spread out, there is better airflow, she already has the cosmetology training on best hygiene practices, and she’s also taking coronavirus safety precautions, like keeping a mask on the whole time. She said of her first three outdoor clients, all were happy with the setup and already booked return appointments.This goes against the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology rules, though. In a statement, a spokesperson from the Department of Consumer Affairs said, “The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology understands the effect shutdowns have on businesses and is sensitive to that. As it stands at this moment, under current laws and regulations, the services cannot be performed outside.
