SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego State University Aztecs football team will play its 2021 home games in Carson due to construction of the team's new stadium in Mission Valley.Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson will be the site for Aztec home matchups in the spring and fall of next year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Aztecs' 2020 football season was pushed into spring 2021.Although the spring schedule has yet to be announced by the Mountain West Conference, the Aztecs' fall 2021 slate includes seven home games, including matchups with Utah, Boise State, Fresno State, New Mexico, Nevada, New Mexico State and Towson.SDSU Athletic Director John David Wicker said, “Once the sale of the site was finalized with the city and we knew we could play football in Aztec Stadium in fall 2022, based on all the information we had gathered, it became clear the existing stadium had to come down in the first quarter of 2021. Our intention had been to play a final season in SDCCU Stadium. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has forced our hand and we must move the spring 2021 games as well.”In a news release, the athletic department said: "SDCCU Stadium will be replaced by a new stadium as part of the SDSU Mission Valley project. In addition to a 35,000-seat state-of-the-art multipurpose stadium for Aztec football, the project also includes a vibrant, mixed-use development that is transit-oriented, and will expand the university’s educational, research, entrepreneurial, and technology transfer programs. SDSU Mission Valley will also include transit, retail, housing, and the development of more than 80 acres of community parks and open space, including the 34-acre River Park."Construction on the new stadium site in Mission Valley is expected to be completed by fall 2022.Opened in 2003, the 27,000-seat Dignity Health Sports Park has played host to National Football League, XFL, Major League Soccer and World Cup championship events. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Padres took a dozen teens undergoing cancer treatment to Spring Training this week.After spending months in and out of Rady Children’s Hospital, the teens say they were excited to get to experience what it feels like to be a normal kid again. “I have osteosarcoma, it's a bone cancer, it was in my leg, and I recently got it is surgically removed,” says patient Nicholas Herrmann. But today, lab tests and screenings are the last things on his mind. “It sounds so fun. We get to go out with a great group of guys and a great group of girls here.”RELATED: San Diego Padres sell out Opening Day game with Manny MachadoThe teens signed their honorary contracts with the Padres and grabbed their jerseys before heading to Peoria, Arizona. For three days, they will get to meet players, attend batting practice and a game versus the Cincinnati Reds. This is the first year for the program. Parents say this trip is an excellent way for the teens to gain independence and form friendships with others. “It's so hard for them. My son is not in school, a lot of other kids aren’t in school either, so they’re not having that social interaction all the time,” says Nichole Elliott- Herrmann. “For us just to see them have fun and have a smile on their face, and not having to go into the hospital is amazing.”Parents will be staying behind for this trip. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three prominent Democrats have filed papers with the City of San Diego declaring their intention to run for mayor in 2020. San Diego City Councilwoman Barbara Bry, Assemblyman Todd Gloria, and Congressman Scott Peters all submitted documents to the City Clerk, allowing them to fund raise for the 2020 primary on March 3. They would replace Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican, who is termed out in 2020. Bry formally announced her candidacy on Wednesday. She said her experience as a high tech entrepreneur and nonprofit leader give her a unique approach to tackling key city issues like cost of housing, homelessness, clean energy, and educating students for the jobs of tomorrow. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Medical Examiner's office released new details about the two victims, an 80-year-old man and his 9-year-old granddaughter, that were killed in a early Monday morning La Jolla house fire.Angie Keefe, her 11-year-old sister, and their father were spending the night at their grandfather's house Sunday. The girls and their grandfather were sleeping upstairs at the home on 548 Caminito La Paz, near La Jolla Parkway.The children's father told police he was "downstairs smoking by the fireplace while the decedent was asleep in his upstairs bedroom and his granddaughters were asleep in another upstairs bedroom," the county medical examiner's office said.The children's father told investigators that he poured kerosene on a t-shirt and burned it in the fireplace then fell asleep. The father said he was awoken at around 3:40 a.m. Monday when the fire spread to the living room. A neighbor called police five minutes later while the father tried putting out the fire.With the home engulfed in flames, he ran to the back of the house and yelled for the siblings to jump from the second floor. The older sister jumped into her father's arms but his 9 year-old daughter, who had autism and was non-verbal, remained in her bed.It took crews hours to put out the blaze which destroyed the home."Firemen located the remains of the decedent next to his bed and found his 9 year-old granddaughter in her bed, amongst the debris after the fire had been contained," the county medical examiner's office said. "They were both pronounced dead at the scene."The children's father suffered unspecified burn-related injuries and was taken to the hospital. The injured man's daughter accompanied him to the hospital, but there is no word on if she sustained any injuries.The county medical examiner's office said Robert Keefe and his granddaughter suffered "thermal injuries with inhalation of products of combustion." The office lists their manner of death an accident.The San Diego Police Department is handling the investigation. 2065
