A Japanese marketing company is giving its employees a very attractive reason to stay away from cigarettes.Piala Inc., based in Tokyo, made the decision last month to give non-smoking employees an extra six paid days off every year. Their reasoning? To balance out the time smoking employees spend away from their desks on cigarette breaks each day.According to the Japan Times, Piala CEO Takao Asuka said the idea came from an employee comment box submission at its office.“I hope to encourage employees to quit smoking through incentives rather than penalties or coercion,” Asuka?told the Japan Times.He was likely contrasting his approach with that of fellow Japanese company Lawson Inc., which recently banned all employees at its corporate headquarters from smoking during the work day.Since Piala introduced the measure, four employees have quit smoking, according to London's The Telegraph.Smoking is a major issue in Japan, with the country ranking among the world's highest in terms of smoking rates, according to the Washington Post.Clint Davis is a reporter for the Scripps National Desk. A late snow in a small town might slow down the traffic, but it can't delay the final days for one of the community's gathering spots."This is when they see each other," said Parkman Township, Ohio Trustee Dennis Ikeler. "At the post office."Ikeler says after decades leasing out the building to the post office, the landlords told the township they don't think the building is safe enough for the public. They terminated the lease with a 30-day notice. The U.S. Postal Service says they'll be out by April 28th.The problem is that a lot of homes in the center of the town don't have any curbside delivery or mailboxes to receive mail. The more than 200 boxes inside the small post office have been their only option. When the building closes at the end of the month, they'll have the option to pay for individual boxes at their homes or have their P.O. box transferred to the Middlefield, Ohio Post Office, about seven miles away.Ikeler says traveling a few miles for mail isn't a big deal for most people he's talked to, but Catherine Dudich says it could be an issue for others."There's quite a lot of elderly people that live in the community and they can't get out every day to go get their mail," said Dudich. "It's sad that all these little communities are going by the wayside."Parkman residents say their P.O. Boxes have been free when they are normally rented out for a few months at a time. Residents say they've been told they'll continue to get their P.O. Boxes free of charge, even once they move to another location. 1544

A livestream announcer for the Madden 19 tournament in Jacksonville, Florida describes the terrifying moments a gunman opened fire, killing two people and wounding several others.The NOW's correspondent Kumasi Aaron sat down with Toshiba Sharon, who was at the venue GLHF Game Bar, when 24-year-old David Katz, armed with a handgun, fired multiple shots at gamers.Sharon says after hearing the first shot, just several minutes into the game, he believed they were experiencing technical difficulties.“Shortly after the second shot rang, that’s when I knew that, you know, it was a gun, and someone was shooting,” recalls Sharon. “So, my attention was drawn straight to the shooter and he was pointing inside the room. From where he came in, it was like a walkway and an entrance, so it’s pretty much just one entrance in and it was one entrance out.”  Sharon says he was sitting by a gamer, who he says was shot in the chest twice.“I watched a boy get shot in his neck, get shot in his head, says Sharon, choking up as he speaks. “Blood right under him, stooped over, lifeless, and brains on the floor…“I watched people run and terrified.”Sharon says the shooting lasted for about 40 seconds. He said when it ended, he stayed in the room to talk to the victims, some he knew. Sharon says he and an off-duty firefighter went to the aid of a victim who was face down on the ground. He says that victim was one of the two men killed in the attack.“I just want people to understand--the kids that were lost yesterday, the men that were lost yesterday--that the brotherhood that they were a part of, for their family members to understand, that they their son, brother or father didn’t die alone, that they died in the midst of family,” says Sharon. “They died, it was very tragic and unfortunate, but they died, you know, their last moments on earth, last moments alive, were doing something they loved.”Sharon says the actions of one person should tear apart a community, but allow a community to come together and not become numb to mass shootings in the country.Two people were killed in the attack. One of the victims, 27-year-old Taylor "spotmeplzzz" Robertson was identified by his gaming sponsor, Dot City Gaming. The other victim, 22-year-old Eli "trueboy" Clayton, a former high school football player, was identified by the Calabasas High School football team in California. 2403

A line wrapped around the corner is a familiar sight to Pastor Bernard Taylor. Families in need know when they come to this Brooklyn church, they’ll be met with open arms and with a helping hand.“It means a lot, a whole lot for the community,” said Maureen Waters, who drives more than an hour to get food and supplies for herself and her grandkids.“We feed up to 100 and 5,000 people per year, and the number, quite naturally, is going to grow due to the pandemic,” said Pastor Taylor.More people need fresh food, school supplies, and clothing than ever before, and the Open Door Church of God in Christ provides it all.“We’re here rain, sun, hail, snowstorm, we are here,” said one volunteer. However, the pandemic is just as threatening to the church as it is to the community.“Some people have lost their homes. Some people can't make ends meet, and some people are really struggling,” said Taylor. “And if they're struggling, we struggle, because it's a trickle-down effect. If they're not receiving, then they can't give."Because of the pandemic, this church, like so many across the country, has shifted to online services. The empty pews often translate into near-empty collection baskets, leaving the church’s staff and its programs in a tough spot.“The payroll department has suffered because we don't have no streams of income to really satisfy or to cover that budget,” said the pastor. “It’s been many times that I’ve said, ‘Well I don't know what we're going to do.’”The business behind many churches in the United States is in for a long recovery.The Barna Group found 1 in 3 people who regularly attended church have stopped watching online services, leaving fewer involved parishioners ready to donate.A leader with Lifeway Research, a group studying churches, estimates 5% of churches will close permanently before the end of the year because of COVID-19. That number is five times higher than typical yearly closures.The question of a church’s survival made even heavier by the loss of life many churches have seen. For the Open Door Church of God in Christ, 19 church members have passed away during the pandemic.“We had some ushers that passed away. That was essential. Some nurses that passed away, and just so many members that I loved so much, and I miss each and every one of them,” said Taylor.Many of those church members also substantially supported the church’s finances. Their loss has caused such a ripple effect; Pastor Taylor had to step in to help his congregation.“I had to put in ,000 of my own personal money at one time just to see the payroll get taken care of, and I don't look for it back. I give it from my heart, and whatever I have to do, I give my last to make sure people have,” he said.To make sure this church could survive, a group called Churches Helping Churches also got involved, donating ,000 to this church and others across the nation that offer their community more than a house of worship.“I’m not working, so I’m glad I can come here,” said Maureen Waters. “I’m not hungry anymore, so it’s good.”Pastor Taylor fears if his church can’t serve the community, they will lose something greater than a place to gather."What's at stake is people lose hope, and we don't want people to lose hope," he said. "We want people to always know that they can depend on what they always depend on and that is the church being the church."Pastor Taylor he has a plan to make sure his business of helping others stays in business for good.“We have to make sure that we do three things. Number one, we have to adjust. A Land O' Lakes, Florida man who was just released from prison was arrested for attempted vehicle theft again before he even left the jail parking lot.Klaid Karpuzi, 41, was arrested when deputies say he tried to steal a truck with a teen in the backseat just three days earlier.As Karpuzi was walking through the jail parking lot following his release, he reportedly tried to get into a vehicle by walking around it, then pulling on the passenger door handle.Inside the vehicle was an off-duty deputy who happened to be at the jail to take a class.When Karpuzi pulled on the handle, Deputy Brunner stepped out of the vehicle, where she and another deputy detained him.Karpuzi told the deputies he saw a vehicle with the engine running and did not realize anyone was in it.He was arrested for attempted auto theft and returned to the jail. Karpuzi has already been released again.  914
