BERLIN — The European Medicines Agency said it would convene a meeting on Dec. 29 to decide if there is enough data about the safety and efficacy to approve a COVID-19 vaccine candidate developed by Pfizer and BioNTech. The agency also said Tuesday it could decide as early as Jan. 12 whether to approve an experimental COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna Inc. In a statement, the EU medicines regulator said it had already begun a “rolling review” of the vaccine based on laboratory data previously submitted by Moderna and would now assess data on how well the vaccine triggers an immune response and whether it is safe enough for broad use across Europe.Germany’s science minister, Anja Karliczek, said Tuesday that the same safety standards are being applied in the approval process for coronavirus vaccines as for other drugs, adding that ensuring the same standards is key to gaining the widest possible public acceptance for the COVID-19 vaccine.Karliczek also said that the vaccine will be voluntary and that authorities will work hard to inform the public about possible side effects that might be excepted after immunization, such as headaches, localized pain and fever.Marylyn Addo, a doctor at Hamburg’s UKE hospital who is involved in the trials for a rival vaccine, said that the rapid development of a vaccine was the result of enormous efforts by scientists, early funding and experience from previous vaccines. 1436

BARNEGAT LIGHTHOUSE STATE PARK, N.J. — A dead whale is sitting on a New Jersey state park beach after a Christmas storm blew through the northeast. The humpback whale is near Barnegat Lighthouse State Park in Ocean County. It is unclear at this time how the roughly 20-foot-long whale died, according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, a marine animal focused organization that responded to the whale Saturday. They said it could have been hit by a boat or something else during the storm, or died from contracting a disease. In addition to coming ashore on a holiday weekend, when few state employees are working, the below-freezing temperatures are also delaying the whale’s removal.“The whale’s too frozen,” Bob Schoelkopf, the director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center said. “We can’t even cut into the blubber, it’s too thick and frozen.”Schoelkopf believes the dead whale was washed ashore on Christmas Eve, then taken back out to sea on Christmas as a large storm came through, and then came back ashore Saturday.Anyone visiting the area should stay clear, Schoelkopf said, because of the possibility for diseases to be in the carcass.Whale watching boats had spotted the whale alive earlier this year in Sandy Hook bay, where it had been photographed feeding, Schoelkopf said.In September, a different humpback whale was found dead off the Jersey Shore after being entangled. Another dead humpback whale was found floating off Cape May in November. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration declared an “unusual mortality event” for humpback whales in 2017, after high numbers of whales were found dead from Maine to North Carolina. NOAA said the issue began in 2016 and continues to persist; the cause is still under investigation. 1765

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The New York State Department of Health is looking into allegations that a former administrator at Emerald South Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Buffalo, New York molested a patient.A health department spokesperson tells WKBW the department is aware of claims that the assistant director of nursing was fired after being caught touching a resident inappropriately. In a separate incident, the same administrator allegedly bit a resident. "We are aware of these allegations and we are investigating. As this remains an active investigation, we cannot comment further," said health department spokesperson Jeffrey Hammond. Emerald South has already been under investigation by the state health department for two recent incidents involving the deaths of residents. In June, 87 year-old William Strasner fell to his death after police say he tried to escape from a third-floor window. In August 2016, 83 year-old Ruth Murray died after she was attacked by a male patient in the facility's dementia unit. Anyone who has a complaint or concern about nursing homes in New York State can call the Centralized Complaint Intake at 1-888-201-4563. Bill Gates is sorry that he made it so annoying to log in to your computer. The billionaire Microsoft co-founder admitted Wednesday that the Control-Alt-Delete function used to start up Windows computers is an awkward maneuver."If I could make one small edit, I'd make that a single key," Gates said Wednesday on a panel at the Bloomberg Global Business Forum in New York City. It's a confession Gates has made before. In 2013, he blamed IBM for the issue. 467
