LA CRESCENTA, Calif. (AP) — Searchers have found a hiker who has been missing in the mountains north of Los Angeles for a week.Authorities say 73-year-old Eugene Jo was found alive Saturday by one of 11 search-and-rescue crews that have been searching the San Gabriel Mountains for him.Sgt. Greg Taylor with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department says cellphone coverage is spotty in the mountains, so he has no immediate word on Jo's condition. He says Jo was being transported to a hospital to be examined.Jo was hiking with a group to the 8,000-foot (2,438-meter) summit of Mount Waterman on June 22 when he became separated from them.Taylor said more than 70 people have been searching for him in the mountains. 728

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - As a former traveling nurse, Samantha Hessing said several companies reach out to her almost every day with offers to send her to hospitals that are in dire need while battling COVID-19."There’s a nursing shortage, that's never gone away," Hessing said, "and all that's happening now is these big hospitals are providing enough cash offers to draw a vast majority of them."Though its grueling work, the pay can be upwards of ,000 per week."I've seen numbers anywhere from ,600 a week, up to almost ,000 a week," Hessing said. "That is with mandatory overtime. So some of those contracts, it is written in that you'll work 48 or 60 hours a week."But Hessing also said the higher the pay, the shorter contract – about 6 to 8 weeks instead of the usual 13 weeks.Traveling nurses have made up about 6% of Truman Medical Centers' nursing staff since COVID-19 broke out."The ability to supplement that with agency or traveling staff is certainly helpful. But realizing that's an area that is very much in demand," Charlie Shields, president and CEO of Truman Medical Centers/University Health, said. Some nurses found the concept of traveling appealing when elective surgeries went away at the onset of the pandemic."So many things had shut down that there wasn't actually an opportunity for some of the nurses to work or get hours," Hessing said. "And so they did. They left and took travel assignments."Hessing said Kansas City, Missouri, is a bigger draw for traveling nurses because it's a metropolitan area, but worries that not all hospital systems in the metro are as lucky."It's causing a pretty big deficit for smaller hospitals or rural hospitals that don't have the resources to be able to offer that," Hessing said. This story was first reported by Andres Gutierrez at KSHB in Kansas City, Missouri. 1836

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — John Schooley arrived in Wyandotte County Court wearing a black and white jail jump suit.It was a sharp contrast to his Schlitterbahn co-defendant Jeff Henry, who appeared in the same courtroom last week wearing a suit and tie.Schooley and Henry are the designers of the Verrückt water slide. The men are accused of being reckless in their design, and of knowing the slide was dangerous.Ten-year-old Caleb Schwab died on the water slide in 2016.Kansas City, Missouri, Attorney Justin Johnston argued Schooley's bond should be reduced from 0,000 to 0,000.He argued Schooley willingly turned himself in after arriving in Dallas from a business trip in China and isn't a flight risk.Johnston also said Schooley's wife and adult children live in the U.S., he has property in Texas and Alabama and retired from the Verrückt project in April 2015 with HSC Construction.Johnston also said he had letters of support for Schooley from people in the amusement park construction industryBut Wyandotte County Judge Robert Burns ruled against reducing the bond.Judge Burns said the bond was appropriate for the serious charges against Schooley and noted Schooley doesn't have any ties to the Kansas City metro area.Judge Burns also ordered Schooley to give up his passport, which he volunteered to do.As part of the bond, Schooley can't violate any laws. After the hearing, Johnston and Assistant Attorney General Adam Zentner declined comment on the bond ruling. 1517

Jack Hanna, a local legend who brought his passion for wildlife and people in front of televisions across the world, has announced his retirement after 42 years, the Columbus Zoo said Thursday.Jungle Jack Hanna, as he is affectionately called by his fans, will retire as the director on Dec. 31, 2020.“Out of respect for the many people whose lives the Hannas have touched, this news is being shared now to give the community ample time throughout the rest of the year to celebrate and thank Jack and Suzi,” the zoo said in a statement.Since the beginning of his career, he has transformed the role zoos play in their communities and globally. Hanna first arrived in Ohio in 1965 to attend Muskingum University. Always the animal lover, he even brought his pet donkey with him to live in the fraternity house. While at Muskingum, Jack met his wife, Suzi, and they married in 1968. 888
